Building a solid wood hutch with pine and painting it black over natural distressed finish. In this build video I will be making custom sized V-joint on the router table because the dimensions of this piece don't work for the standard 1x6 or 1x8 available at the lumber yard.

When I watched this 3 years ago I remember thinking this was so far out of my reach to make. I watched it again 5 months ago and still didn’t see it as something I could do. Over the last couple of weeks I made three varying sizes of jelly cabinet. I think my largest one was 48hx28wx13d. I’m still finishing it up. And the smaller was 48hx15x13. After building those… and then watching this… It makes much more sense to me now. I would love to tackle a project like this. It’s also funny how you pick things up each time you watch. I don’t remember seeing how you painted your shelves. I LOVE that idea and will definitely be using that in future projects. Still curious about your paint method. I assume you painted it some sort of green color, then put wax to resist some of the black paint. But it looks amazing. I still love this cabinet and hope to make one someday. I also realized a few other things. Like the braces in the corners of the feet. The jig you used to get the shape for the feet. I love this idea. I made one but it was for that specific size cabinet. When I made the next and it was different size I had to either make another or adjust. And now I have a better idea for how to make it. Thank you again for sharing this.

Do you perhaps have plans for this build. The method you used is quite unique. Could you share more about what the technique you used?

Nice work, as always! I’ve been watching your videos since about 2006 - hard to believe! - and I’ve always wondered about your unique workbenches. Any chance you might do a video talking about how they’re built and why you went that route instead of a more traditional cabinet makers bench (or just a big work table)?

A nice dresser or cabinet style is a Biedermeier wardrobe ( we use them with shelves for china wear). Its made out of 5 parts, 7 incl doors and is a bit like your style of making furniture. I made it for our home but they are now pretty cheap online second hand as they are to big for most people. Lots made of cheap wood but also walnut ones. Have a look.

Great as always Mitch. I noticed a few comments below. Please add some voice. Having been a cabinet maker for donkeys years there is not much I don't understand or pick up very quickly as the piece comes together, so don't need voice. but still learn a few tricks along the way. I suppose it is hard to get a balance. Most enjoyable.

Thanks for posting I am still using my pine hutch with a few blunders that I made thirty-five years ago with a table saw and router, not sure if you have done one but would like to see a vid on your distressing techniques.

Just be a shitty painter then hide your bad work by 'distressing' it. Pretty easy

Did you use the melamine for assembly to avoid damaging the face of the soft pine?

I had the volume at a level where the machines wouldn't wake up others in the house, and I couldn't understand anything you said, as a result. I love your videos, but I'd love them even more if you made the dialog louder :)

You don’t worry about wood movement?
@acraftman2823
@acraftman2823 4 жыл бұрын
Soft woods have very little movement (BUT!) did seem like a lot of cross grain glueing.
@hffcom
@hffcom 4 жыл бұрын
I've been building this way for 15+ years. Up to 6" wide softwood you can glue a cleat across the grain and it won't split in the middle. wood glue can creep with the wood movement up to a limit. for 1x8 planking I will glue in the center 4" of the plank

@@hffcomLike I mentioned softwoods have very little movement. I am sure your methods speak for themselves, TBH I am from the south and so deal with different humidity levels also I have not built a lot with white pine as it is not as prevalent as your area, I made the comment just to confirm that excessive cross grain gluing can be a issue in some cases for those who don't have years of experience. Btw what the hell was after your cat? Looked like a raccoon.

Uses a push stick on the router but risks taking off his fingers with every cut on the table saw. Does great work, but don’t follow him for safety.

I have been watching your videos for years and really enjoy the content...But this one is difficult to get through! Because of all of the commercials. I know you can make a little extra money for running these commercials but it's not enough to put food on the table:) Please disable the commercials tia.

Don't like commercials? Pay youtube's monthly fee. Content creators have little choice, whether to show / not show advertising from Google. Sure, the content creator can choose to demonetize a video, but that WILL NOT stop all the ads. Your complaint is with Google, not Mike.
