Pine Needle Basket Vase: Satisfying Project {Hyperlapse}

Watch the process of coiling a pine needle basket vase. This project took me a total of 6 hours, to coil the basket, not including the time to gather, clean, and dye the pine needles.
Pine needle basketry is a rewarding craft, but it is a slow craft. From picking out each individual pine needle segment to cleaning, dyeing, and weaving 1/4" by 1/4" the process is relaxing and tedious at the same time.
This video is meant to be an overview of how pine needle baskets are coiled and stitched so that anyone interested in the craft can see the entire process without sitting and watching a 6-hour-long video. I find getting a broad picture idea of what a project entails helps me when I begin something new. So here it is, the broad overview version of pine needle basketry.

This is incredible! You certainly have an excellent talent. How long did it take you to make this basket? I noticed a change in the camera angle and several outfit changes, so I'm assuming this wasn't done in one sitting. You have sparked an interest and inspired me to try my hand at this. Thanks! And you made the idea of, "sleeping in" this morning - the joke's on me, it's daylight savings (oof), more enjoyable. Lol

Thank you! Stitch placement is the main shaping dictator. Where you put the stitch determines where the coil sits.

This was delightful to watch. Such a lovely organic structure with what nature provides. How do "fix" the colours. I assume that if left in sunlight, they will all go the brown colour. I have looked at doing something like this for some time with pine needles.

Do you place the needle to the left or right of the previous stitch?

If you’re working clockwise you would put your needle in on the right of the previous stitch. It would be to the left if you are working counterclockwise.

Question, will the pine needles mold if they arenʻt dry before weaving?

No the pine needles will dry thoroughly after weaving. They need to be very damp in order to weave the basket.

Why can’t you leave the tips on the needles? It seems like it would add bulk?

You can leave the tips on. I didn’t want that specific texture in this basket and I didn’t want to work with the bumps the tips create. But it’s absolutely something you can do.
