Excellent as always Tim. I usually fish this unweighted as well. But I'm really liking your way of adding weight to flies. No waste. I really like fishing this type of streamer at night. I copied this from one of your previous tutorials and it is bar none my #1 nightshift fly.

Agreed! It should be called “Great Guide Patterns Without Hipster Douche Names” So many videos on reinvented patterns with a couple added frills, an articulated shank, and a stupid name. Mad River, Kelly Galloup, and Schultz are the worst for that.

I love these Pine Squirrel Zonker Strips, I bought the entire Hide of several colors. Crayfish Orange is a killer color, another variation is to palmer a dark brown badger hackle up the hook shank after anchoring the strip above the "Barb". then attach the strip on top the hook a couple more times up to the 1/3 behind the eye point, then as you did I palmered the zonker strip to form a thorax, and added a thread head. Another variant is to use two slightly shorter tails of zonker to simulate crayfish claws. this pattern yielded my largest fly rod catch, a 30 inch, 14 LB Channel Cat while fishing for largemouth Bass.

Great fly and great tutorial. One question if you don't mind. I know from a previous vid you like this fly at night. My buddy and l have a running debate. At night, do you want this fly deep at night, or a bit higher in the water column so a fish looking up sees the profile better at night? We both get results, but you have more experience than either of us. I am of the latter opinion, but l base that from my experience with fishing for salty stripers at night. Thanks for all the years of expert tutorials.

Shorter hair on the squirrel, mottled color, and slightly thinner skin. Personally, I think this gets you better action and profile on a small to medium trout streamers. The squirrel strip tail really moves, and keeps the streamer from getting too bulky. Some trout forage fish are pretty slim, like dace and darters. It’s kinda like micro rabbit strips, but better.

A squirrel is a four legged rodent with a long bushy tail. They often live in trees and merrily leap from branch to branch. A rabbit is also four legged but usually lives on the ground and hops around using powerful rear legs. They also have long ears that stand up above the head. Hope this helps. 😂

Call me difficult, but I just don't think that lure-making and/or fly-tying videos are complete without an in-water demo of the design's action. I would LOVE to see this one moving through the water.

yeah, you're being difficult. :0) It looks like a simple tie. Tie one and put it in a pool/bath tub and see what it does. Don't be lazy, my friend. The entire fun is getting a sprinkle of ideas and go off on your own and figuring things out yourself. Discovery is learning!
