In Part 2 we address why the TCM, ABS, and Shifter Assembly are all offline.
This is a great example where some detailed wiring diagram research pays off big time!
After narrowing down the issue, the next question is how to REPAIR it?
Any Parts Required?
Or maybe we can engineer a more reliable solution ;)
But the Crazy Crossfire might have more surprises up its sleeve...

Good job Ivan! As a Mercedes tech we dealt with these 20 years ago ,that car is a rebodied 170 SLK chassis and they had so many issues, we called those a K40 relay. Powers everything, crank sensors were a high failure part on these V6 and V8.
@99domini99
@99domini99 7 ай бұрын
Yep haha! I guessed it last video, and my guess was right! Those K40’s go bad so often it’s usually the first thing to look at for a crank-no-start and offline modules/no power. They’re pretty easy to fix, it’s almost always a bad solder joint. A bad connection inside is often the cause of intermittent no-start and stalls.

In some cases it's the end wire of the relay coil that has failed because it was improperly bonded to the post. A magnifying glass inspection could be useful just to check that.

I'm a little concerned about joining those circuits. This would've been a perfect opportunity for them to cost-reduce that box, so there must have been a reason why they chose to include an additional relay.
@Kehvelii
@Kehvelii 7 ай бұрын
True. The cost reduction may also come from not having to manufacture a different box for cars which need separate feeds and for cars which don't.

On the working relay the fuses are after the relay, on the not working relay the fuse is before the relay. If you join the relay outputs, the output is not secured by a 15A fuse (only by the 40A fuse).
@brainndamage
@brainndamage 7 ай бұрын
Still, just put in a 15A fuse with some wires poking out of the case. There's no need for those two relays to be separate.

@@brainndamage I think the manufacturer had something in mind, when they installed two relays instead of one. Perhaps they wanted to make sure, that one module could not power the other modules backwards, when the relays were not activated.

nice bit of investigation/analysis to get to the failed component and a good cheap fix for the customer.Appreciate that the load on that working relay is minimal,however,it has switched just as many times as the failed relay and now it's workload has doubled.You may have already done this but I think I would have suggested to the customer to start saving now for either a new module or to look for a good used module as a precautionary move.Assume he is keeping the car of course.

I'm guessing the ESP kicking in on wheel spin overloaded the ECM relay circuit you had piggybacked off of, and either borked the jumper wire, or the fuse, or there's actually an issue with the ESP system causing it to pull to much current, which is what stressed the circuit in the first place and caused the initial customer complaint. Eagerly awaiting part 3 to see! :D

Just about all electronics today, are soldered with Lead free alloys (almost pure Tin) and those do not flow and 'wet' a joint as well, unless lots of flux is used. Also, Tin has the annoying property of forming dendrite growths that can bridge and short connections - really troublesome with dense packed micros. A good flux that I use in repairs, is M.G. Chemicals 'No Clean' Rosin Flux #835-50ml. No Clean means that removing excess from the board is not necessary, but Brake Cleaner, Lacquer Thinner, or Isopropol Alcohol all work well doing that.

That's a bit like when I was diagnosing my great uncles stepdaughters 1997 model Ford EL Falcon (Australian made car) which had a stalling problem, whenever I diagnosed the problem it would resurface later down the track. It wasn't until it was towed to my dads place because it ended up being undriveable that I finally nailed the problem,it was just a non standard engine immobilizer/car alarm which was the culprit. The Fix was to rewire it back to how Ford had the ignition switch wired up at the factory meaning totally bypass an engine immobilizer which had been wired up in series with the ignition switch for about 1/4 of a century . So the problem was something else & other than I thought it was !

Ivan I love your troubleshooting and repairs with the exception of 'jumpering out relays' or othe components. I reserve the 'jumpering activity' for components that I find are not available due to obsolescence by the manufacturer or not availabe from previously owned or junk yard sources. One of the things I find annoying is a previous tech does a field repair in a not so very well condition causing longer troubleshooting to determine just what was done and why. For this repair yours is a great field repair. If the owner was agreeable I would have tried for a relay replacement . As of this posting there are several OEM relay packs not the same P/N but same internal OEM relays on Ebay. Further I also saw some NEW individual relays from our not so favorite place China (BARF) I am not a fan of Chinese quality I have had too many failures and poor customer service on previous repairs. In either case great repair on your part keep up the good work.
