Hello, Ivan. Thanks for uploading the video. I thought you were not going to share this one. FYI, I found out later after you did the diagnostics that my son was the one who left that ground wire loose after he did some cleaning in that area. Unfortunately, that simple mistake cost me almost $2K, including your fees. When he was replacing the new set of plugs, he installed 5 of 6 and left out one. Believe me, that was a lot of noise when we started it. The G has been working great since the issue was resolved. Thanks for your great diagnostic skills, Ivan.

huge respect for commenting and clarifying, what i find weird is the fact that the ECU didn't have an isolation layer to avoid this kind of electrical damage, hitachi is a great electronics company but it seems their automotive modules are not as good as the Delphi, Mitsubishi or Continental ones, the nissan versa and sentra also uses hitachi modules made in mexico and have this same issues were the ECU or BCM can get easily damage, i think their is s pattern there.
@alexanderzubar95933 сағат бұрын
The best electronic isolation components are usually rated to 2500 volts. ignition coils generate over 40,000 volts plus the fact that the spark is a very high frequency so it can typically cross anything with any capacitance. Hard to isolate lightning.

Original problem was oil burning. Engine swap led to missed ground bolt left loose. Loose ground led to coils and PCM burn out. Several human error factors all contributed. The engine swap tech needs to form good habits or his career will be over. I learned and formed those habits in the 70’s from making my own mistakes. Nice video.

Tin-plated copper braid. The primary reason it's used is it's super flexible so it isn't going to fatigue when connecting two components that will have significant relative movement like between the engine block and chassis. It also gets used as bonding straps and grounds for radio frequency (AC) applications because the wide flat strap has lower impedance than a round stranded wire. At DC there's no difference.

The intermittent misfires make total sense because the bad ground means those coils got completely fried one by one due to the back EMF coming from the ignition coils, blowing out the transistors. Once those went out, the back EMF could pass through to the output segment on the ECM.

Great diagnostic, Ivan! Repair was both simple and easy - tighten a loose ground bolt! The problem was the number of items cooked by the loose ground. Numerous such cases, after major engine compartment work, that hold for some time after the work was done, and only then they start to create problems, misdirecting from the real cause.

One thing I don't like about these Nissans is no misfire monitor on scantools. So I always do an rc test first. Then use the coils fuse to watch the amp ramps of the coils. In terms of misfires this is how I try to at least isolate which cylinder is misfiring. Also since the short block was replaced I'd check the ground wire attached at the upper part of the timing cover. I've seen it so many times. Anyway haven't even watched the first 3 minutes. So let's see what we got.

Considering that the most current the battery sees is when cranking I wonder why the negative don't go to the engine block. GROUNDS! I saw the main ground location on that engine. My 06 Frontier 4.0L main ground is at the same position. Remove that bolt holding the ground tight, and check for discoloration. Mine had that black discoloration. I checked for voltage drop while cranking between that ground position and the starter mounting point, no voltage drop. I don't like seeing the main ground that far away from the starter. The vehicle has a current sensing device mounted on the ground cable near the battery ground. It still runs great and starts right up. I've thought about running a ground cable from the main engine ground point to the starter, but I don't know if that would mess with the current sensing device. I'm thinking about trying that with a jumper cable and monitor the current through the sensor with a scope.

The Nissans must be different to the Holdens where the key is programmed to the body control module rather than the PCM. If the PCM ever needs replacing in my Holden VY Commodore however, it still needs to be linked to the BCM (body control module). I know with my other Commodore, the VL Commodore which has the twin cam Nissan RB30 (RB30DE engine) fitted I bought the Nissan RB25DE engine package which was from a 1995 model Nissan R33 Skyline GTS & I used the RB25; DOHC cylinder head, pistons, high volume oil pump, wiring loom & ECU as well as the Nissan RB30E engine block, crankshaft & connecting rods to build the Nissan RB30E back in 2003 then we bolted it in on December 31 2003 then we had it running on January 1 2004. The problem is that the engine wouldn't rev past 2000 RPMs &; the spark plug electrodes were all black, the ECU was setting code 13 for the mass airflow sensor. I Checked the continuity of the ECU wiring harness because it was a cut & splice job in the Holden VL Commodore (similar to the Keeping it Reet one on here) & that measured o.k. So I went to the import wreckers & tried another mass airflow sensor to rule out a bad one, I tried another green label Nissan RB20DET mass airflow sensor out of a Nissan R32 Skyline GTS-T which was the same as the R33 Skyline GTS RB25DE part. That didn't work so they had a couple of R32' Skyline GTS-T RB20DET ECUs in stock, I tried one which was chipped for the HKS cammed RB20DET engine, the engine blew black smoke & it stalled when I released the clutch so that was a no go. I tried a stock Nissan R32' Skyline GTS-T RB20DET ECU & the engine ran much better & it could rev past 2000 RPMs, I asked if I could borrow it after I ordered the stock Nissan R33 Skyline GTS RB25DE ECU for $300 AUD (ouch) because there was no warranty after 1 year & I sacrificed the Nissan RB25DE engine just to build a 3 litre version. It idled too high using the R33 Skyline GTS-T ECU because the R33 Skyline GTS used a throttle position sensor rather than a throttle position switch which the Nissan R32 Skyline GTS-T used. It was only that the R33 Skyline GTS RB25DE engine used variable valve timing that I needed the non programmable Nissan R33 Skyline GTS ECU, if it was the Nissan R32 version of the RB25DE engine which didn't have variable valve timing then I could've got away with using the Nissan RB20DET ECU which can also be chipped because you can remove the PROM without destroying the ECU unlike the R33 Skyline ECUs, people have destroyed them when they've tried to unsolder the PROM chip from the circuit board. So for the R33 Skyline setup the only options are either the Apexi power FC ECU which is programmable as well as being plug and play or an aftermarket ECU such as a Haltec programmable ECU which is very compatible with the Nissan RB series 6 cylinder engines !

When I worked for an import dealer I was told for intermittent problems, drive it. If the problem isn’t there, park it, put on the ticket “could not recreate customer complaint.” If you make any attempt at repairs, you now own the vehicle. All future repairs are on you. I’m sure many issues were noticed on test drives but ignored. BTW, if you put on the ticket “vehicle operating as designed,” a lawyer will say, “ so your company makes vehicles that do (insert issue here).” Ask me how I know 😊.

Had it towed home and the next day I pulled codes for camshaft sensors, but that didn’t change anything The codes would bounce around some days it was wheel speed sensor, another it’d be ecu not communication, sometimes o2 related, we couldn’t get it to manually crank beyond maybe a quarter of a turn and that was only after taking the ignition coils out. Then we hooked it up to another car jumping the battery revving for like a minute straight, and then it finally turned over with key for half a second but wouldn’t again, and trying to manually crank it any further after that broke the breaker bar. I don't know about these cars, but Toyota oil burning issues was because of a skinny oil ring which had smaller ring drain holes which became clogged. That's one car that needs oil changed every 3,000 miles.

More than likely from the stupid low tensile rings, which the Valvoline would not have helped. Hear a lot of good results from that stuff though.
@kevin9c19 сағат бұрын
@@brianw8963 Assuming the engine didn't burn oil from day 1 and that the rings didn't "wear out" the issue is because of carbon/deposits stopping the rings from moving in the piston. Which the R&P would address. Also assuming it didn't have some severe cylinder scoring (probably not).
@brianw89638 сағат бұрын
@ I can assume that might be possible, but the low tensile rings is the cause of the oil getting into the combustion chamber, and the valvoline wont repair that problem. Just my assumption. And they actually do burn oil from new, just progressively gets worse. 👍😅
@kevin9c18 сағат бұрын
@@brianw8963 The problem with thin, low tension rings is not that they don't "work" but they are very easily seized with carbon build up. It doesn't take much then they stop moving and the rest you can guess. So if you can get the rings moving again, it should seal up to the original design intent (which would not include massive oil consumption). Again this is barring severe cylinder scoring, or a manufacturing issue (which can also happen and R&P will be useless for that).

you would think more protection would be provided to the ECU to keep high voltage spark from using it's grounds as a return. Leaving an engine to chassis ground strap off is not uncommon. I wonder how other manufacturers deal with that issue.

Education is king. It doesn't make you a good mechanic, you have to have those skills and coordination too however, seeing the light with these computer vehicles is so important unless you are destined to be a parts canon shop. Know your electrical and how to use the scanners and scopes, wire diagrams and tracing down wiring issues are all prerequisites before calling out parts.

Ivan, it’s normal for the G35 and 350z’s to burn oil. My friend had an 06 350z manual that started to burn oil at 50-55k miles.

Unfortunate for the car owner. But at least the root problem was solved, and the car is back on the road. Now, about that convention. I live in the North Philadelphia area. I didn't know about it. I would have liked to have gone. Can someone like myself sign up to be notified of local events like that?

At the 13 minute marks. I'd go to the scantool and see if live data shows rpm. If so probably bad pcm.

In the running engine , the energy consumed by the coil is from the generator, which in turn is grounded by the engine.The relationship between the engine ground and the chassis ground is only in starting and charging. Does anyone explain why the ECM burned out? Please 🙏
@major__kong7 сағат бұрын
Ivan showed the relevant diagram. For that circuit, it would seek ground through the expensive stuff.
@alexanderzubar95933 сағат бұрын
Easy to demonstrate this. Just stand beside the car while not touching anything but the screwdriver shaft inserts into the coil output. Even if you are not touching the car you will get ZAPPED! The inherent capacitance between you, your shoes, the ground you’re standing on and the capacitance of the tires, wheels, bearings, back to the chassis, plus the very high voltage, (40,,000) and very high frequency will make sure it finds a way.

Seems as though that ground fastener was not tightened by those folks who put in the short block. SAD.
@SHSPVR8 сағат бұрын
It seems like to me that Infinity did a poor job designing ground feeds the one you tightened up was a body ground they should been a secondary ground on the battery cable going to the engine block

@KT-eh5xs7 сағат бұрын
would this be the dealer fault for the engine swap, not tightening the ground? not sure if they would believe anyone but their test would show bad ground would cause these issues.
