Oh this is a fun truck!
Well it used to be fun until it started running really poorly....misfiring, stalling out.
Owner says it had a P0336-CKP Signal Performance.
He installed a new OEM CKP sensor, but the problem is still there!
Let's see why this Angry GMC is having a bad day, and if we can get it back to full health in the parking lot :)

Ivan, thanks for including the PICO waveforms. I don't know how many times you said you doubted it was a gap issue, but several. In the end it was a gap issue which leads us to concluded you must keep an open mind, be very methodical in your approach, and be prepared for the unexpected. And....you looked like you were having a great time on the test drive. Thanks for Sharing!

Well done Ivan. I had a Range Rover Evoque with a cam crank code and the crank sensor had a similar issue in detecting the teeth at higher rpm. Distance matters, especially with cheaper oem parts that aren’t as sensitive to begin with. All hail King Ivan, Lord of the NPR repair.

The crank sensor magnetic surface position to the teeth is very precise, I guess it should be parallel to the teeths, and the bracket play a big role in it, if the bracket somehow deformed, it will definitely affect the performance of the whole sensor, and as consequence bad engine performance.
@michaelkrenzer3296
@michaelkrenzer3296 2 жыл бұрын
Buick 3800's of most era's use two tone rings on the back of the harmonic balancer and two Crank positions sensors (it is one physical unit, two hall effect sensors). One tone wheel is evenly spaced, same size teeth while the other is long and short to indicate cylinder TDC. Even the GM sensors for these are now junk so a better bet is anything with lifetime warranty and being skilled at swapping them.

Well done ivan 😀 It's such a crude sensor fit for a critical measurement. So the amplitude of the pulses may not have been high enough to register on the input of the computer all the time. They should of put two bolts on a ring to apply pressure to both sides of the sensor. Tight ass manufacturers lol. The owner looked so happy 😀
@mikechiodetti4482

That rust sure causes a lot of problems! The owner's REAL HAPPY now! How long did the truck sit before you got to it? Hopefully the gas tank was full so no moisture collected in the tank. This diagnose reminded me of that GM pick up with OBD1 when you swapped PROM's in the PCM. With all the mods done to it, it's a wonder it runs. Maybe a good dyno tech could help it run better for optimum performance. Good fix Ivan!

well, Ivan is now more familiar with LS engines and the goofy two piece riveted together and interference press fit onto crank with no key/dowel pins! :) not that you will, but to install/remove them you heat the snot out of them and work carefully, precisely marking alignment is critical before removing them or make/buy a special alignment jig.
@61jpf
@61jpf 2 жыл бұрын
The sensor is sensing the complementary target. It senses the shift of the magnetic field from oneside of the target to the other. This design allows for less sensitivity to the airgap. Also allows zero speed detection of target with high tooth count. Same type of sensor for the cam shaft but its target is machined. Not a sandwich stamped target like the crank shaft target.

I got out and the two drain plugs in the bed had cleared and were draining water that had collected in the bed. So it has a new cam. How about a new crank? Perhaps it is a rebuild? I think the ultra sensitive crank sensor signal (gap dependency) is due to the crank walking (thrust) end play too big? If the crank is worn the end play should be checked and addressed during the rebuild, which may require additional parts above what is in the rebuild kit.
