Those early Multec 2 injectors had a terminal pin fretting issue. GM issued a TSB on it. The pins are so thin that they fret and develop an oxide layer, causing a misfire. You can sometimes unplug them and plug them back in and they'll work again for a while. GM's fix was to use dielectric compound on the pins to reduce fretting. They eventually moved away from those fragile pins and went to a USCAR-style (EV6) connector which i believe eliminated the issue once and for all.

@altontyler865 Жыл бұрын
Ivan, I work for a GM dealer in the parts department. I did not get a close enough of view of the injector; however, the spark plug is def counterfeit. The way to tell on those is that if you look closely at the grounding electrode, near where it centers over the central electrode, there should be a small “ raised dot” on the OEM. The counterfeits do not have this. That’s why you had to bend the grounding electrode to an unusual shape or position. Now, that’s not say that some of the counterfeiters don’t catch on and start trying to put that raises dot on their creations. GM is taking steps to try to help this situation by adding a holograph on all parts containers and they recently changed their core color of the blue on all their containers. It hard staying ahead of the counterfeiters. The best thing to do is always buy from a dealership or a reputable parts distributor.
@altontyler865 Жыл бұрын
And btw, there have been times when the grounding electrode actually breaks and/melts off and ends up in the cylinder. Bad bad situation when that happens. It’s best to replace those as soon as possible or better yet never use them. If the price is to good to be true… there’s a reason. ORM is more expensive but you’re better off. Another thing to mention is that typically somewhere in your community either at the dealership or a reputable seller has rebates going on where you get a few bucks off the cost of each plug. GM is REALLY good about paying out those rebates.

The reason the touch screen was having issues is because of the water droplets on the screen; It's most likely a "capacitive touch screen", which are more sensitive to the slightest touch; whereas a resistive touch screen you typically have to push down a little harder and works better with a stylus/ pen, etc. So depending on what type of screen it is, you're either not pushing hard enough (resistive screen) or the droplets are making it think it's being touched in several places at once (if it's a capacitive screen). Just have a towel near by to wipe the screen and even wipe the droplets off of your gloves-- would probably clean up the issue with the random response.

Sometimes it is necessary to replace all of the injectors, for GM this is usually due to known failure modes of the injector design (could be heat + age related or a design defect). So, you may be faced with replacing all of the injectors when the first one fails because others will follow. However, properly replacing all of the injectors is not trivial or cheap. You first need to get a set of OEM injectors, test for proper coil resistance with the new set, then send the injectors out to be flowed and if necessary also cleaned. You can sometimes buy a remanufactured set that has been clean and flow tested, which is usually the most cost effective. This all takes time, but is needed to ensure that the fuel closed loop algorithm has accurate fuel flow control.

With it being a dump truck, the low mileage isn't surprising. My dad and grandpa had a home remodeling business, and bought a 1990 F450 Dump truck brand new, and it currently has less than 100k on it. Basically it would get driven to a job, sit for a week or so while it was being filled with debris, quick trip to the dump, then back to the garage until the next job. At most, it may make a few trips to the dump or the quarry for sand/gravel/dirt for each job, but would be used multiple times a year. Dad finally retired about two years ago, so it sits for longer periods of time now.

Some folks are simply cheap minded regardless of the benefits and long term reliability a few dollars can be. That 2003 6.0 with those low miles deserves the best because it is one reliable design and has plenty of life left in it. Sadly, some owners will go with all of the cheap plans because they believe its an old "dump truck" and just doesn't qualify for decent maintenance and OEM parts. I found it a hard one to believe when the owner said he will do the spark plugs when Ivan already had one out and could have done them all for pocket change. Tight wad owner. But swapping injectors around seemed to revive the cylinder a bit? It wasn’t making sense. In retrospect, the head gasket was sealing sometimes and not sealing at other times? I put in a new head gasket but the temps are high and compression is 20 psi lower on cylinder 4 and there’s coolant coming out of the exhaust valve during warm up but then closes. It’s weird as hell, there’s little loss of fluids but the temps are high.. have to check the coolant pressure and could try a used head but I’m probably swapping engines and transmissions
