The process cannot be rushed. Working with time pressure, an audience, or even "help" can make even the most rational diagnostician forget or neglect avenues of investigation. Real work, and learning, truly is solitary in nature.

What he said in the end is true, the car told on itself, sometimes we turn a deaf ear to it. Thanks for showing your mistakes we all learn a great deal from them to. I had a problem with an Iat sensor on a 2002 Sonoma, did the chinese fire drill on it, turns out to be the female side of the connector had to much slop in it. The classic wire wiggle (eric o) showed a voltage drop, tighten them up no more money light. So I learned a lots from all the key players on the you tube channels, thanks

I think the other guy is rushing you, and you would have never cut that Rd/wt wire at the fuse box, instead pulling it at the eng sol like you were going to, which would not have fixed the high current and made you look elsewhere. I can't stand people rushing me on a car, it's usually those who don't understand what's involved. I know they're trying to help, but usually only make matters worse.

Well, there you go. Customer doesn't mind the fact the belt system has a problem yet that belt is causing other problems. Interesting that it took faster RPM to originally create the issue and then came down to simply turning on the key. As usual, electrical issue due to manufacturing defects/designs. Seems this one was a wire harness routing issue into dangerous areas without proper protection.

It might have helped find the section of wire with high resistance from the damaged wire. :-) Every tool has it's uses and there is more then one way to skin a cat.
@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics7 жыл бұрын
Ah in this case there were no resistance issues, just copper rubbing on steel lol
@petrocksgarage7 жыл бұрын
Ah, that's right, it was shorting to ground. Thats even easier to find with the LoadPro. When/if you pressed the magic button, while the leads were plugged into the connector, you would likely have gotten a reading of zero on your volt meter indicating a short to ground. btw, in my experience there would be a little voltage drop if even a couple tiny strands of wire inside an 16 or 18 gauge wire were broken. Typically a drop of anything above 0.5v is considered excessive.
@petrocksgarage7 жыл бұрын
Actually, come to think of it, if my memory of the circuit you were playing with is correct (I didn't analyze it too closely when I watched the video) you might have been able to detect the short to ground at the fuse box via the fuse or relay port. When you pressed the magic button the current going through the tool and into the circuit would take the path of least resistance which is typically through the short to ground spot. As a result you would likely get a reading of zero at the fuse box telling you it was a short. Then walk the circuit via linear or binary search to find the spot of the short.

Hey that’s what you get when you go to the big city! Sounds like Keith set you up for that one.... is there some rule that the fuse with the biggest list of components/ circuits is always the one that blows the fuse or has the parasitic draw? It’s never the one marked “dome light only dome light” that’s the problem. Ok now for the important part Biling out the job, because you know if you take your time, a couple grand of test equipment, and of course your skill set in problem solving we have a pretty sizable bill. Of course the customers reaction is “ oh it was just a wire thats not much, right?” Comments anyone.......

I don't think that Ivan should be embarrased about this job. He found the problem and fixed it. Even if there had been no prior knowledge, the trouble shooting probably would have followed the nearly same path. The "bad" assumption was that the belt was unrelated to the stalling problem. There's no likely connection between a rubber belt and an electrical problem unless you view things from a mechanical perspective. Assuming that there was a connection would have been as bad as assuming there wasn't. Electrical shorts can happen anywhere in a harness. (Google: rodents car wiring) Not having the very nice professional diagnostic equipment that Ivan has, I would have fixed the belt first. If I had the same equipment I probably would have approached the problem the same way Ivan did. The "time wasted" was the lookup time to get the diagram and track down the electiucal components involved. I'd argue that it might have taken longer, but it wasn't a blind alley. It led to the harness by eliminating the solenoids from the circuit. If the belt had been replaced, there's a better than even chance that the shorted harness would have been moved enough that it wouldn't immediately short again. That would have produced one of those very annoying magical fixes., where the tech feels conflicted about spending more time digging into a problem that's no longer there. An experienced troubleshooter might figure that something around the belt was the cause and look for there for it, but a disappointing number wouldn't.

It's always easy in hindsight to know what should have been obvious at the time. At the same time, that belt might not have had anything to do with the fault. Sometimes we have to take the most likeliest direction and hope that it will be the shortest route. Diagnosis is not an exact science as there are so many variables in motion simultaneously and rather than berating yourself, you should be clapping yourself on the back. Think of the experience that has been written into the brain's hard drive to be accessed again at an appropriate situation in the future.
