Actually, these days its not hard to find excellent auto technicians. The industry has changed over the last 2.5 decades. People have to generally love the trade to get into it now and are willing to put up the ignorant stereotypes perpetuated by those bad apples that took advantage of what once was not considered a skilled trade... It's not the 1950s anymore. There are Ivans and Eric Os in every town and city. Problem is...people have a backwards way of judging this. Fact is.. the good techs are the ones that charge for diagnostics. Not the other way around. Professional technicians charge for their time and knowledge and back it up with guarantees. Mechanics fire parts cannons. People who are willing to waste hundreds of dollars on a free "guess" are the same ones to refuse to pay 100 dollars for a guaranteed diagnosis. The problem has never been a shortage of good techs...its always been a shortage of good customers.

Like several other people posted look at the wiring harness. I had an E320 95 wagon like this and a 95 S350 Turbo Diesel. I had replaced half the engine wiring harness on the S-class by the time I sold it due to the insulation falling off the wires. The wagon was new enough and didn't need anything besides basic maintenance. I probably pull the CKP and inspect it and have a closer look at the flex plate while turning the engine over to make sure everything is good there.
@brainndamage
@brainndamage 3 жыл бұрын
The ckp sensor could be inverted if you say it's from a newer model year. A few years before (91) Mercedes used biodegradable wires that would crumble and short out in 10-15 years. You had to replace the entire harness or replace all the wires to fix those. Not sure if 95 models still had that problem.

17:50 Totaly true! The OBD standard came from the USA to Europe. It allways amazes me when is see on what old cars you can sometimes plug in a standard OBD 16pin connector! And i still think that germany is more unfriendly to non dealer mechaniks than the US. Everything here is way more expensive when it comes to spezial tools. For example BOSCH own the distrobution of OTC in Europe and OTC has some nice stuff that is good price value. You can NOT buy this stuff via BOSCH, you would need to import it......

Quite an interesting diagnosis Ivan. I still have one of those W124's, but the older style Mechanical Fuel Injection system and is quite easier to diagnose and get running. Those newer W124's with the HFM system are more complicated to trouble shoot and have a history of failing wiring harness insulation. Which is the reason I got the older model. Looking forward to when you get to pinpoint the cause of the crank no start and the fix. Cheers!

Hey Ivan, a remarkable piece of art this machine is :). Fency blinking diagnostic codes, weird signals on the scope, vacuum tubes popping and vanishing in the dark depths of the engine bay :). I should say you need to take advange of the ability the hood to be lifted vertically upwards. This gives a great access to the guts of this beast (check the hinges). I am not sure, but probably you already got the information that this engine management system during the starting phase (until the engine reaches 500rpm) has fixed ignition timing. This fixed timing is dictated either by the crankshaft or the camshaft position sensor (depending on the engine managed). This particular engine (by the look of it I believe it is M104.992) uses the camshaft possition sensor for the fixed igniton timing. You did not gave us complete picture about during what circumstances you got the different waveforms for the ignition signal (one with nothing at all and other with some fency bursts on the line), but I reckon that the one without any movement on the ingition signal was with the disconnected camshaft possition sensor and the others with the bursts were with connected sensor. This engine also has what Mercedes-Benz back then called "Camshaft Adjuster", which can advance or retard the shaft by 32 degrees crank angle. Troubles with that system could cause poor engine running, misfires, rough engine idling etc. Based on the aforementioned guess I took and the back log information you gave us for the vehicle and from the thousands kilometers I am sitting right now I would guess - Camshaft sensor troubles: - The gap between the sensor and the camshaft. - Wrong/Not meeting specifications sensor. - Stuck/malfunctioning Camshaft Adjuster. Although ...... Based on my past experience with M111.941 (which is PMS (Pressure Management System) controlled 4 cylinder engine) - they might fried the HFM-SFI (ECU) module. These things are very picky and do not tolerate free play with the igniton system. For example: what you have done - taking out the coil and trying to see if there is a spark grounding the sparkplug on the engine metal (like oldschool soviet style spark check) is forbiden by law for these systems. The transistor (I believe it is MOSFET, but it could be open-collector bi-polar) grounding the ignition line in the ECU is blowing off itself immediately. Personally threw in the trash two ECUs of that kind due to bad spark plug cable, which was preventing or intermitenly loosing the spark of one of the cylinders. From the other hand blowing off all three transistors for the three coils simultaneously is highly unlikely. If only one line was damadged you should be able to start the engine but having very rough idling. Very peculiar case! As the brand slogan says - "The best or nothing!" Usually, when they break this is the part, when "nothing" comes into play 😀😀😀 Good luck!

looks like a large can of worms has been opened. that's some weird looking ringing on the coil control, I'm thinking bad ecm ground or the ecm has some capacitor death and crusties all over the inside from cap leakage. seems to have been a lot of that around that era. not sure about mercedes but probably. could be compounded by the crank sensor being inverted, but I'd imagine it would cut fuel as well as spark. is the crank to cam timing offset right? I assume they did the parts canon of coils, CKP and MAF all at once after it quit running from other causes, which is why I said ecm ground/bad ecm.

Hey Ivan🤘 The old ones can be the most tricky..lol..Perhaps if it has an external ignition module it might be bad, I think they were 2 wire coils but I better go re-watch. Pretty sure you had coil control, so that should rule out an ignitor module issue if it has one, but no spark events seen on the scope trace and that weird hash we saw on the coil control captures has me very suspicious of a coil control issue, or bad ground etc. If it's not fully grounding the coils, maybe it could suggest a bad ground to the module, if it even has the said module, or a bad pcm ground if ignition coils are pcm controlled? Although, I'm guessing the next step might be to verify cam/crank/timing relationship...and I don't like that hiccup in the cranking kadence🤔👍🇦🇺

While that car has throttle cable, the throttle is moved electronically by the cruise control. There’s a go pedal position sensor inside the throttle body, and then the cruise control opens the throttle. If the throttle control computer dies, there’s a mechanical linkage that will let you open the throttle some amount… like full throttle in the car will give you 1/4 throttle under the hood.

Just stumbled upon this video. Great work! By the way, a "cheap-ish" (~$100) automotive meter by "ALL-SUN" (?) EM-135 has two functions specifically for this. One is fault code counter, which does what your LED does, but more automated. The other is Mercedes DTC reader. The meter is rather meh in the accuracy department as a multimeter (certainly does not warrant $100 tag), yet I find it OK for working around engines and it has other useful features for automotive or just small engine work. For modern vehicles fancy scanner and picoscope do more than a meter though, so it might not matter to you.

Wow. I haven't messed with one of those in years. It brings back memories. Back when I was a young mechanic working for a Volvo dealer, the shop had these old school scan tools that you had to plug in a cartridge for the vehicle make, model type and year group. It worked on 80's and 90's Volvo, Mercedes and BMW. They took forever to read out codes. But it worked in a similar fashion as your LED light trick does. Codes are generated by the pulse cycles. The only nice part was the scan tool would keep reading codes until it finds a repeat and it would display these codes on an LCD screen. So, depending on the module you were reading from, you would have to look up code descriptions from a book. Even though technology has come a very long way since then, I still miss those simpler times.

My next step would be, go order the correct crank sensor for that exact engine from Mercedes. From what I have learned over the years is, each year, Mercedes changed the resistance and or polarity in the crank sensor from year to year. Even though they may look identical, other years, makes and models are not interchangeable. Anyway, good luck with that. Looking forward to part 2.

At 29:53 look at the big picture: the delta T for injector firings is halved on the very first injector pulse. I'm thinking there's some kind of timing issue where something is 180 out. Could be caused by the crank sensor, cam sensor or any of the timing components themselves. My next step would be to find a good cam-crank correlation, not just a good crank signal.

Back to basics, the car does not like the CKP sensor, Why? This is an old car and probably does not have CMP/CKP timing error codes. If the computer is using the CMP as its reference and sees the CKP out of time with it this might be the error. I would look at the wave form traces and check the crank and cam position relationship in detail. The CKP tells the computer when to spark but the cam tells the computer when to inject if the timing is out it just will not run.

From someone on the interwebs using an eBay blinking light reader. (47 control of ignition coil voltage exceeded limits). maybe a book of codes came with the reader? The car was a 1995 e320

The crank signal is not just inverted. In the diagram it shows the large pulse starting with low. So you have low, lowhigh, low, high... On the scope, the large pulse goes in the same direction: high, lowhigh, high... Is that a problem, I wouldn't be so sure. What about the signal levels? Wasn't there some Staten Island vehicle or something where the signal was there, but just not powerful enough for the computer to register it correctly? Or slipped timing? What about sticking a borescope in the crank sensor hole to see if you can see anything funny going on? (Rust jacking? Loose timing belt/chain? Messed up notches/magnets? Yes, they replaced the sensor but that doesn't mean it is properly seated either.) Also I noticed that the dash tach does bounce.

@@jimharper6073 I think usually that would indicate the computer is seeing SOME crank signal. Doesn't mean it is seeing the full, correct signal though.

Okay, adding a comment, wow. That can be tough to diagnose '95 trouble codes! But cool to see waveforms and show what the engine is doing. This piqued my interest on how you are going to troubleshoot this. Look forward to part 2!

Hi Ivan, Unlikely, I will only drive a Merc...nothing else lasts, drives like a Merc. 3 of them parked outside....If your ever in England have a go of my CLS 350 diesel waggon...40mpg and real poke. The hardest thing is you are diagnosing this from first principles, my local specialist is as happy on the older or newer stuff...the merc diagnostic kit is stupid expensive. There are not enough of these around for mechanics to be super confident of each models foibles. Looking forward to seeing the fix, and you taking this for a spin. Do not be shy about revving this engine! I have a R129 as a weekend car with the same M104 engine. Still pulls 140mph ball day long whilst in France on holidays. The only weak point on this engine is it will need a head gasket half way through its working life. 240horses from a 3.2 i6. I would expect 30 mpg driven normally all day everyday. I think your channel is awesome, and its great to see you get stuck into a bonafide classic

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Ivan, might be worth confirming that this car has had its wiring loom replaced under warranty. Merc were "persuaded" to use biodegradable wiring looms in this year. Lots of cars in Europe have had bits patched in...long term ownership would signify a new loom (if its bad) which are still available. Hope you can source all the parts easily enough stateside

HI IVAN great video again.I would have liked to see you say>well let's look at this box of replaced PARTS from the parts canon. just so we know EXACTLY what the customer already replaced.Then i would like to see the new parts he put in and MAKE sure for MYSELF that he ACTUALLY PLUGGED THE WIRES BACK TO THEM> MY reasoning is ,What if he forgot to put say the CKP wire back on? YOU are assuming he did put the right parts in it and he did put the wires back where they belong.As you just started testing for signals ,right? when my friends ask for help ,the first thing i do is DOUBLE CHECK their work,50% of the time,THAT'S where the issue is,haha If it worked when it was built new and now it no longer works and the customer say's BUT I PUT A NEW PART IN!!!! And no I'm' not a mechanic,but i did work on rockets,so we always double and triple check. Have a good thanksgiving IVAN,and i hope you put out part two,i can't wait.

Check the resistance on that crank shaft signal It may be pulsing but if the resistance is to high the Bosch ecm will not like it. As far as I remember on the old Bosch systems it needs good signal from crankshaft sensor to fire the coils and or fuel pump..

Good call. The peak crank shaft voltage appears to be 7v by the polarity is backwards; is that the problem with the new crank shaft sensor initially installed?
