Let's install the new High Pressure Fuel Pump on this Direct-Injected VW and do a much-needed oil change before even attempting to start it up.
You won't BELIEVE how much gasoline was in the crankcase xD
But we're not done yet...car starts and runs, but it is still NOT HAPPY. What's the final fix?

I worked for a shop who did service on power company trucks that drove around the city in the higher gears. It carboned up the plugs bad so the boss asked us to do a tune up on them. We went over there and got the offending truck and did a "Jack Fitts Hillside tune up" No parts required.

I had 2017 Chevrolet Equinox that did the exact same thing, the high pressure fuel pump was puking fuel into the crankcase but it ran, it was running super lean because of the amount of fuel inside the crankcase fooled the computer into thinking it was running rich so the fuel trims were both in the high negatives. I replaced the pump and fittings, changed the oil, and drove it to ensure that this was cure. The customer was happy and I was too, think about it, these pumps fail and turn a automobile into a rotating bomb inside if it is possible for it to go boom, scary i think.

I recall working at a gas station in 1991 when I was a student. A young woman kept coming into the store to buy oil. I watched her as she poured quart after quart into her engine. When she came back in the third or forth time I offered to assist. I checked her dipstick and the level was approximately halfway up her dipstick, it was probably overfilled by the equivalent of the several quarts oil she just added. Thankfully the guys working in the shop next door drained the excess and then she was on her way.

Prolonged run time with short bursts of enthusiasm solves much. My wife has a 2017 Jetta with the 1.4 turbo but does in town driving. It started having a rough idle (misfires on 1,3,4). My first shot at a fix was to drive it to work at highway speeds, gunning it on the on ramps. The commute is 100 miles round trip. Idle returned to normal (misfires gone). Now I swap cars with her every month or two for a day and have not had problems since. I prefer the turbo diesel VW's but the gas turbos are a close second. Enjoyed the 2 parts and thanks. Cheers.

I see a fair share of coils on these VW engines getting damaged when they´re yanked out. There is a "special tool" to pull the coils. Using that tool helps to get them out without destroying the rubber boot which is a common issue. It also helps to put some dielectric grease in the boot to prevent them get cooked after X miles.

I've owned 5 VAG products and work on probably 20 others - never had a need for a tool and I've never seen boot damage due to removal. The coils usually fail internally (check resistance values) and they are not terribly expensive to replace.

I use an oxy acetylene welding torch to clean fouled plugs. I found that propane takes too long and really doesn’t get hot enough. What I like to do is to use a small tip on the welding torch and pass the inner light blue cone in the flame over the white insulator around the center electrode until the insulator glows orange. That will clean just about anything off of it. No parts required! This procedure is just for gas/oil fouled plugs. If they are high mile and the electrodes are eroded I’d replace them.

From what I understand, it's fairly common on these GDI engines, that you need to de-carb the head and valves and change the spark plugs every 30 to 40 thousand miles to maintain the best performance. I've had to replace a lot of valve covers on those engines because the pcv clogs up and causes the engine to leak oil from almost everywhere. It never ceases to amaze me just how quickly VW's and Audi's can become such endless money pits as they age. Anyway, another great diag and repair down in the books. Nice work Ivan. Although maybe you should have at least recommended to replace those spark plugs in the very near future.

The fuel pumps eventually migrated to the fuel tank in the 80's, and now they've added them to the head on top of the engine. Obviously, the manufacturers aren't concerned with this sort of failure. The 8 dollars you saved the customer just wound up in your pocket as the time it took to use the customer's car as a high rpm spark plug cleaner. It may have cleaned the very tip of the porcelain insulator enough to idle, but did it really make it look as new as the others? Not no parts required, don't forget the pump and I don't if you count oil as a part, I'm being a smartass I know. The guy across the street asked me to take a look at his lawnmower, he couldn't pull the cord, I drained approximately two quarts of oil from it and refilled it with the proper amount of new oil, it started right up, correct me if I'm wrong but to get an accurate oil level check it after the car has been sitting for a few hours or before starting the next day, this gives the oil time to drain back the pan, and I never go more than 3 to 4 thousands miles between oil and filter changes, I don't care what the manual says or what type of oil I use and I always do my own oil changes, when the time comes where I can't do it anymore then I'll seek out a local garage to do it, no iffy lube for me, there's too many horror stories about places.

Was actually thinking of buying one of these, as they were really the only small SUV with a manual gearbox. Did some research though, knowing that it is a VAG product. Turned out that they are pretty crap as far as reliability goes. European cars, drive great when everything is great. Unfortunately, things fail on all of them, quite often.

Like I said in part one. The going to quick lube places probably caused this. They put in the wrong oil, likely too thin, which got past the piston rings into one cylinder fouling the plug causing a dead cylinder then the unburned fuel got into the oil. You should have put in all four brand new OEM plugs. At 100k it is due anyways.

Knowing how much PCV euro's gulp into the intake. With oil spewed all over the motor and the crankcase being over full by 4L of volatile fuel. I would put money on it having been pumped into the intake fowling that plug. Just a heads up. Where I live with up to 40C in summer. I've had low hanging parts of plastic intakes so full of oil and heat from PCV systems. They have literally melted fist size holes in the manifolds. You all would know DI engines are terrible for carbon due to this and egr. Unless they 100% knew it had been done before. I would recommend a physical intake clean out. Including and especially the intercooler(usually a lake of oil after 100k) due to it hanging low and changing of temp (light vapour to heavy liquid) accross it. While doing a walnut valve blast. It's so prolific, I'm surprised more people don't specialise in this work.

Lucky that engine didn't liquid-lock before with all that gas and oil in the crankcase. As it is, I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't have some blown seals. I'd give it a diet of new plugs and decarbonize the engine just for kicks.

Great video Ivan. Wondering how bad HPP gets that much gas into the crankcase. Don’t the injectors shut off the flow? Were there that many attempts to get it started that flowed that much gas into the crankcase? Could you explain this portion? Don’t follow how bad pump gets more gas into cylinders and the crankcase. Thanks in advance.
@mlieser1230
@mlieser1230 2 жыл бұрын
The HPP is driven by the camshaft. A low pressure electric lift pump sends fuel to the HPP. If the diaphragm in the HPP ruptures, the lift pump still delivers fuel. The fuel seeps past the diaphragm and enters the engine via the camshaft drive. If the car is driven the fuel enters the crankcase over a period of time until the leak in the diaphragm allows so much fuel that the engine is flooded with fuel.
