I always wonder about people who complain about the cost of repair vs Blue Book Value. It's like they are mini-hedge fund managers. The BBV only matters if you are selling or buying a car. If you have a high mileage car that you have taken good care of and it needs an expensive repair, what are your options? Buy a new car for 10 times the cost of the repair or buy another used car that probably wasn't taken good care of? You made the right choice, Ivan!
@lorrinbarth19697 жыл бұрын
Well said!
@THEGAMINGHELP1015 жыл бұрын
It's actually a bit more complicated situation to determine which is the better option. First, you need to consider how well the car was maintained overall, and compare to a slightly newer vehicle that hase a good maintenance history (they exist), next you need to get your current car fully inspected to determine how much you need to spend to get it up to snuff, next you need to find a "new car" with good maintenance and for a good price then do a cost per mile analysis of the two situations. People that look at KBB vs cost to repair don't know what they are talking about. The cost per mile plus a risk factor is how you determine the correct desition.
@steveboone54503 жыл бұрын
@@THEGAMINGHELP101 True. The KBB value of a 2010 Rogue represents a vehicle with a largely unknown history and all the associated risk. The value of a 2010 Rogue that you have owned, maintained, and understand for years is far higher if the vehicle has been reliable and well maintained. That extra knowledge can be worth thousands of additional value. That's why I hate to sell a reliable, well-maintained vehicle -- I know it is worth much more than book. Better to keep it or pass along to family members.

Congrats on getting it all done . I still think that the kind of miles your wife has driven that car , and no service ever being done on the CVT was darn good . Especially since so many Nissan CVT's have gone out with 50 to 60K on the clock . On another note , I don't care what manufacturers say , I do a complete flush every 30,000 miles on all my automatic transmissions now . Dirty fluid , excess heat , carrying or pulling to much weight , jackrabbit take offs and a lot of stop and go city driving destroy automatic transmissions . IMO the filters can go 100K or more , so if that's all you can do is pump out 4 quarts a couple of times a year and replace it do it . Keep it clean and cool . TheReaper!

Well said. At 10,000 miles the fluid and filter should be changed, and the magnets inside the pan cleaned. All the break-in material floating around in there is not helping anything. There is a reason why it only has a one-year/12,000-mile warranty. And like this fellow said, if you got 50K from one of these CVT units, you got lucky.

Great point. I only see a new car or used car justified when the car's already trash and the repair cost exceeds its value. Your bank account will know when it's time. And every new car you bring into your life is usually a mystery. How well it was built, or how the previous owner treated it will determine your experience with it. With a car like this, any problems it had right out of the gate would have already made themselves known at this mileage. It's a known quantity.

true..i spent 2k getting tranny rebuilt on my 92 chevy work van...id be lucky to get 750$ if i sold it. that being said i know the history because i have done all the work to it..water pump,alternator, steering box etc..it is reliaable and always passes inspection. taking a chance on another used one is more of a gamble and a new one wil run me 400-500$ a month. i dont like payments on anything.

This is particularly true out here in the West where rust doesn't enter into the equation. I had replaced all of the mechanical parts on my Grand Prix and since it was entirely rust free there was no reason for it not to go another 200,000 miles. When the steel in the car is like brand new what's to be gained by replacing it so that you've got to go with the intake maniforld change, alternator change, radiator change, power steering rack change etc. etc. all over again.

Thank you for taking the time to share Ivan. All this information will be very useful if i ever have to do a CVT on a Nissan which i suspect i might in a year or two. I have seen other people change regular automatic gearboxes on YT but having only ever pulled manual boxes i did wonder what else the job entailed. Seemed pretty standard actually. Judging whether to keep a car based on book value is silly. Firstly buying a new car is crazy. It loses half its value just because you buy it. You still got to pay 10 times what most repairs cost plus a car payment/interest and dealing with dealers. If you buy a second hand car, you never really know if its been looked after. Best to run what you have into the ground. Glad to see Mrs Ivan making an appearance again. Mrs O hated the camera at first and now she's on Eric's videos all the time!

Thanks for this series of videos. It really helped me as I'm doing the same repair. I have 2 questions. Is it necessary to get a front end alignment after? Did you have any problems programming it yourself or would you recommend I bring it to the dealer? They told me they would be installing new software or something, possibly made up to pressure me. I would much rather do it myself if that works, but I also don't want the new transmission to have problems just to avoid the dealer fee.

What a hellish ordeal! You've convinced me to plan on trading in my 2016 Rogue when it reaches around 100k miles for a Toyota or something with a better current reputation for longevity and reliability. Mine has just under 50k miles now and I recently noticed some odd behavior from my CVT that has me wanting to learn more about these transmissions. A couple times recently on cold mornings my CVT stayed in low and revved the engine up much longer before it finally "shifted" to a higher ratio. I see on some sites this is normal but it didn't do this last winter or the winter before. I always let it idle and warm up a bit before driving and then take it easy until the engine reaches normal operating temperature. I'm deeply concerned that so many Nissan owners say their CVT failed before reaching 60k miles. I plan on changing the CVT fluid soon even though the manual says 60k miles and will have my local Nissan dealer do a complete check of everything before the Powertrain warranty expires. I've found that my '16 Rogue has a later evolution of the Jatco CVT than your '10 Rogue did. It's the RE0F10D and has a slightly improved design that appears aimed at avoiding the ball bearings and worn out grooves problem that doomed your original RE0F10A CVT's primary pulley and so many like it. Looks like Nissan sold you the D version to replace your A version. The last time I dropped a tranny to make a repair was for the 5 speed in a '91 Eagle Talon I had. That was frickin' child's play compared to the hellish nightmare you had to do on your Rogue. Whoever said on a different video you were complaining too much is a troll just trying to amuse themselves at your expense. You had every right to curse Nissan designers and all their decedents until the end of time. I would have dropped a couple hundred F-bombs just when I realized the exhaust pipe had to be removed. Thanks for sharing your very informative videos!

15:11 That bushing doesn't look to have gone all the way across the shaft. I think your coupler is just a little twisted in relation to the shaft and not sitting squarely on the locating dowel and is causing the bushing to bind. That would also allow the nut to pull tight against the pinch as the bushing would be out of its way, so you wouldn't need to get funky with the welder.

Ivan, I watched all of your videos, on the swat and the tear down. I have a 2013 Nissan Altima S, 2.5L that sometimes will not engage in drive or reverse. When it engage I only get the most 20 mph. I originally got the codes read by the Nissan Dealer and they pull P0776 and P0965. I flush the fluid and got about 5 quarts, then I drop the transmission oil pan and change another 6 quarts. On the first change, the oil was dark and there was metal filings on the two magnets on the oil pan. The second flush, was also dark but not as dark as the first, but there was also metal filings on the two magnets on the oil pan. I soaked the valve body in gasoline overnight and re-install the oil pan and put back the same oil because it was new oil. The car drove a little better even giving me 40 mph sometimes, and it will take off when I come a complete stop. However, after driving it for about 20 minutes, when you come to a stop it will not move until I shut it off and let the engine cool down for about 10-20 minutes. I read online that when the solenoids on the valve body are defective, they will fail when the get hot, and cause the vehicle not to move. I keep clearing the P0776 code, but it keeps coming back. I do not get the P0965 only the P0776 code. I found a set of 5 Solenoids in China for about $95, and I wanted to by them and try that first before buying a new CVT which I cannot afford right now. If I buy the Solenoids, can you help me clear the TCM like how you did with your wife's car? If you or anyone can help me out, please email me at: prembizmarketing@gmail.com thanks.

Seems the popular school of thought is to do an alignment after dissembling the steering and suspension components. Thank you for the education.

Hey Jack, thanks for the comment! No alignment is necessary in this case, since the tie-rod ends were not unscrewed, and the steering shaft coupler was self-centering. Great question.

if the car doesn't have an external cvt oil cooler there is a fluid cooler kit available through the dealership to retrofit onto the car to help prevent premature fluid degredation and thus premature trans failure.

Lots of life left in that vehicle. Good call on replacing the CVT.

Did I missed a little speech on the device you are using for diagnostics? Do you won this thing, or can rent? My Mits dealer is 3hrs away. So far I just check codes from my phone, but I would live to get better data and control. I need to get a flash from the dealer too, to learn the CVT codes for the swap. I am thinking of just swapping and use my old chipset attached to the Solenoid body inside.

My girlfriend's 2013 Altima has the trans going out at 60k miles... swapping out the trans is cheaper that 25-30k for a new car .that's going to be a fun job for me. did the dealer deliver the trans to your house?
