I’m gonna need a custodian key ring jingle sound effect that gets more and more overt as your number of keys grows increasingly absurd.

In this game you take damage by "being scared". As I remember this is a german game and the dev said at some point that the game tracks your mouse movement. If you move your mouse abruptly when scares come it is counted as you being scared. So you lose life.

@@Boneymcboneson I agree, but I think the concept needs a little more workshopping. Maybe someone has - this game has been out for a decade now, after all - but I'm going to make my arguments based on the system as presented here, rather than any potential advancements that have been made since. In this implementation, it looks like just about any amount of movement, whether of mouse or player, during a scare is enough to trigger a "being scared" flag. Librarian's taking a goofy amount of damage just for trying to get a better look at the spooky thing. Compare the first time Librarian answered the door, where he took about 1/3rd his HP in damage just for looking up from the door handle to where the ghost was supposed to be... and the second time he answered the door, post-crash, where he didn't move the mouse at all and took no damage. Another example was the shadow in the hall a bit later than that where Librarian took damage for looking toward it and sprinting at it, which the game parsed as sudden mouse movement plus running, without any sort of context-awareness regarding the DIRECTION of running. I think more horror games don't do this simply because there are so many reasons a player might move or look around suddenly that have little to do with actually being scared. To implement this kind of system in a believable way, there would need to be a couple more features in the decision-making tree on how to define player input - and that's a lot more pioneering R&D than I think a lot of developers want to do. At minimum I think the damage should be more forgiving if you look toward or run at the scary thing, and treat it as a successful scare if you run or flinch away.
@GoettlicherOreo
@GoettlicherOreo 14 күн бұрын
@@QuantumWaltz I agree. While it is a cool concept it needs a lot more polishing. The main problem is that the game is extrapolating your mouse movement. So when you move the camera in a specific direction you need to continue the movement when the scare hits even if it is against the normal behaviour of watching the scare itself.

Man, you have no idea how glad I am seeing you made a video of this game! I basically spent good part of my teen years watching horror let's plays and, for some reason, alanzoka's(a brazillian youtuber) let's play of Pineview Drive was such a remarkable experience for me. It simply had a such creepy and comfy vibe, although I had no idea at that time that this feeling had a name, let alone a cult following. So, since I first discovered your channel two years ago, I always thought you making a series of(or at least play) this game would be so perfect. Thank you so much for this and for all your content. You have been the only channel I consistentily watch for a while and I just love your videos. Srry if bad english

ABOUT THE RANDOM DAMAGE: I am quite sure i remember that the damage mechanic of this game was that it tried tracking if you are scared by how rapidly you move your mouse. If you yank your mouse around quickly it will deal damage.

pineview drive was one of the first games i repeatedly watched playthroughs of when i was younger because of the specific feel this game had/has that seperates it from other games. You know, Mister Librarian, the incident with the phones reminded me of a story that happened to me. A few years ago, at the end of December, my friend and I were wandering around a multi-story residential area at night. We were wandering with a specific goal - to find spruce poachers - where I come from, there are, unfortunately, a lot of them - and to yoink the tree so that they wouldn't profit from it (an important clarification - we were looking specifically for thieves who steal these trees from forest plantations - we wouldn't offend decent foresters). I know, it looks questionable from a legal point of view, but we were underage punks, and didn't see anything wrong with it. That night was generally eventful. But now I remember something specific. It was already well past midnight, and my friend and I had already walked about five kilometers by then, noticing several places along the way where poachers had laid out their "goods," but we still decided to walk to the place where the apartment buildings ended and the park began. Just out of curiosity, cause you never know, maybe someone had laid out stolen Christmas trees there too. And so, passing by the last residential building, we heard a ringing sound. One, short, but quite loud ring. At first I thought that someone was ringing the doorbell in the house itself, but my friend objected that it definitely wouldn't have been heard from inside the house. And it sounded exactly like a ringing, not like an intercom signal or something. We stood rooted to the spot and began to look around cautiously. We peered into the windows, into the darkness of the nearby park, even into the snowdrifts by the road. And when we saw nothing and decided to move on, another short ring rang out. Without saying a word, my friend and I quickened our pace and turned the corner of the house. We exchanged a few words about these ringing sounds. Came to the conclusion that the hell knows what it is. Then we decided to walk along the park, looking out for poachers. But quickly discovered that there was no one there, and went back. However, we didn’t go exactly the same way, but on the other side of the last house. And when we had already reached the corner of the house and were about to return to the main street, we heard a ringing sound again - and this time we saw it's source. There was a pay phone on the wall of the house, which we hadn’t seen last time because of the tall bushes located between the sidewalk of the main street and the wall of the house. We exchanged tense glances and decided to go closer. For a while we just stood there and looked at the phone, waiting to see what would happen next. A minute later it made another ringing sound. Then my friend decided to look around to see if the phone could be seen from the windows, and, with a chance, to find that prankster who was calling it. But the windows of the neighboring houses were out of sight, and the view across the road was blocked by the tall bushes. The phone rang again. This time, twice in a row. It all seemed more and more absurd and creepy with each passing second, but I suggested to my friend to wait for the next ring and try to answer the call. He shrugged and agreed. And as soon as the phone started ringing again, I grabbed the receiver, not even waiting to check how many rings it would make this time. I expected to hear anything - from some kind of telephone prankster to a chthonic voice reading some chthonic spells. But I heard only silence... At least, that's what it seemed to me at first. The longer I listened, the more clearly I heard a quiet hissing sound of static interference, through which an equally quiet, intermittent high-frequency squeak broke through. I thought it sounded like Morse code, but made up of random sets of characters, but my friend said it was probably just induced interference. And the cherry on top of the cake of this whole strange story was that at the very moment I hung up and turned to leave, the phone rang again. Later we came to the conclusion that something had broken in the phone, which is why it started receiving a non-existent incoming signal, or the signal was so weak that the incoming signal detector was triggered not constantly, but at intervals of 1-2 minutes. But all this came to my and friend's mind, when we were already home, with an honestly yoinked from some poachers Christmas tree, and played Heroes Of Might & Magic. But at the moment when we stood there in the dark, surrounded by snowdrifts, concrete walls and leafless bushes, and heard this ringing and quiet static on the phone... You know, Mister Librarian, I'm not one to be scared. I've seen and heard worse things in real life, and I rarely take them seriously. But that time even my unshakable character gave way to horror.

It definitely gets better once you get into the rhythm and figure out the game's logic. The "inheritor of a haunted house" experience is IMO all about wandering dark halls at night, and this game gets it down amazingly. It's at its best in the moments where it's actually guiding you somewhat though, rather than just trying every door you can remember to be locked.
