Fun fact: a lot of the development for Luigi's Mansion used the original Resident Evil trilogy as a base for how to frame the game and its atmosphere. Safe Rooms, door opening cutscenes, puzzles, the use of its music, it was even planned to have a much larger basement and also a lot of segments inspired by RE. Hence, why this game is so good at doing scary without being particularly scary.

The one thing with Luigi is that no matter how scary, or mundane, the creepy thing may be, it's all the same too him. It's like how he will see a eldritch horror as he would see a mouse and simply be scarred, but also handle that fear.😅

Small tips from a fan of this game: Ceiling objects like chandeliers, lamps, and fans can usually be pulled around by the vacuum for loot. Ghost catching is exactly like a fishing game - if you tug and release the stick while vacuuming, you'll reduce their health much faster! The money you collect influences your score in each act, and while it has no effect in-game, Luigi WILL leave with the money, and he'll spend it on something nice for himself, with nicer outcomes based on how much you collect and keep by the end!

To me, this game is the epitome of “creepy and comfy”. Dark and dim, with some light spooks, but with all these cool, cozy little rooms and spaces.

LET'S FLUFFING GO!!!!! Genuinely thought you'd wait until Halloween for this, but I'm not going to complain. This game just has that perfect vibe.. It let's itself be creepy, and gave me nightmares as a kid but made me feel so strong overcoming the mansion despite my fears. The sequels went for more cartoony horror, and it wasn't for me.. But to each their own, at least I still have the 1st Mansion.

Little known fact: Zeke is actually an ancestor of the Mario Bros. :P Not really but it's funny that the Haunted Mansion game for the PS2 had the same kind of gameplay loop as Luigi's Mansion.

awww heck yeah, love this game. I like thinking of this as the Gamecube's "Peach's Castle". That being THE place to explore on the N64, like the hub of the N64 itself, showing off the graphics and cool crap it can do. In Luigi's Mansion, you can see a lot of cool lighting tricks, particle stuff, and m o n e y. Also, with a proper gamecube controller, the vacuum works with analogue control sticks.

I'm already loving this playthrough! Seeing your genuine first time reactions to everything in this game is a lot of fun. It's rare seeing someone actually play it fully blind. Part of me wants to give you tips and tricks but I actually kinda wanna see you play without any help and see how well you will do.

I was about 15 when this came out. We got a GameCube with Luigi's Mansion for Christmas that year. I absolutely loved this game. Also, it ended up being one of the best-looking games that ever got released on the GameCube for its entire life cycle and had some seriously impressive stuff at the time like the cloth physics (interactive cloth physics that have a gameplay purpose, no less). The ghosts look great. The dust that kicks up, Luigi's breath. It looks a LITTLE less impressive at a high resolution like this (the lower resolution of the original non-emulated game actually helps smudge things a bit and hide visual crimes and IMO it looks "better" at the real resolution) but I bet natively on a GameCube and CRT TV it still looks great. It looked so good at the time it felt like I was playing a pre-rendered CG movie or something. And yeah, it's not really a gimmick, it's a great Mario(?) game. Legitimately worth this playthrough. Deserves to be up there with some of Mario's best adventures.

oh man, I remember first getting this on my gamecube and having a blast replaying this over and over, trying to 100% it, getting every Boo, every coin, tirelessly searching areas to get all the coins, bills, and gold bars I could... So glad you're covering it! It's such a fun game, it's so creepy and terrifying, and yet it still is playing to the idea that a kid is likely playing this game.

Something had jumped out to me: Professor E. Gadd here says the mansion had just appeared recently, as if out of thin air. Then he conveniently has ghost hunting equipment in place. Then he says it took 20 years to develop. Then he says it can turn ghosts into portraits *but also that it works the other way around.* Let's face it: the guy is *probably* the one who had created the mansion in the first place! Probably as a test run of his machine!

the color of the portrait frames represents how well you did while fighting them (the less times you lose them the worse the grade) so gold is the best, silver is okay, and copper is the worst

If you're having trouble pulling the right direction when "reeling in" a ghost, you can use the little light underneath them to gauge where they are in relation to Luigi to figure out what direction to pull.

Boses drop small and medium pearls and if you manage to do 75% of the bosses health in 1 suction they drop a large pearl each are worth money, the frames the ghosts get reflects your battle with them by I think hp you lost and the amount of money you have at the end of the game decides your rank and funnily enough it’s near impossible to get the worst rank The blue ghost that appeared and disappeared in the generator room is a speedy spirit which appear in certain rooms and you get 1 chance to suck them before they disappear semi permanently till a certain event were they will appear once more if you failed to catch them the first time but failing to suck them in after that you can’t get them again
