The developers should really allow you to heal a small chunk of health at a time by actively lighting candles yourself and staying close to them for a moment, that would make the matches more useful in turn... Also, scares should eat away at your health either by proximity, or just some pre-set amount based on how spooky each one is intended to be. I can't quite think of a better idea off the top of my head but both would be infinitely better than tying it to mouse turning/mouse movement speed.

its been a long time since I watched someone play this game (and I am SO happy you played it. You were the best vibe for this game. i gasped when I saw you played it) ... but I STG you missed so many little scares. not your fault of course, just.. I remember so many statues peeking at you, ghosts outside. I remember one really really good scare where, after the scare crow is active, you find the back door open. or maybe I'm imagining that. Guess I"ll go rewatch a different Chris' video (CJUgames~) and see

I feel like I watched a Let's Play of this in years past but a lot of horror games from this era blend together. I think that a Pineview Drive 2 could be great with updated textures, lighting, and more counter-play against the different threats. I don't know if it would work better by making the gameplay a survive-the-night challenge like FNAF rather than keyhunting, but either way, the classic haunted house could use more love in the indie space.

So having watched someone play this game and get to the end, someone linked a post to the Steam Forum and from there a FB post where the dev explained the ending. It's from 2014 so instead of making you search through the FB, I'll just try to summarize it. 20 years ago Linda and our hero were there together. All the spooky stuff happened with the cursed doll, and you trying to run away through the forest. But whereas the start of the game opens with the implication that you escaped and Linda died in the house, we instead compare it to the ending. Your memories have been implied to be swiss cheese throughout the entire game, and at the end we see the shot of Linda running away, escaping and surviving, while you stay behind with the cursed doll, and thus die. So, you've been a ghost this entire time, but you cannot cope with it so you live in a fictional reality where you survived and Linda escaped. And suddenly, as of 20 years to the day, your brain decides to focus on the reality where you return to the house to get answers. But over the 30 days you see increasingly absurd stuff. Stuff like the pirate ship, for example. And more importantly, the fact that the wife we abandoned in a haunted house has her own crypt. And then you get to the end, turn on this strange machine, and that was enough for your character to realize "OH! THIS MAKES NO SENSE!" and wake them up from their delusion. But yeah, don't have any idea how this story has anything to do with the Passing Pineview Forest (which I think was a prequel of you walking down the street towards the house) and the sequel Pineview Drive: Homeless, but that's the gist.
