Trapping bait is about as fun as catching gamefish to me. I don't care if it's minnows or pinfish or crabs, trapping bait is damned entertaining.

You gotta come to south Florida, there’s BIG tilapias in the freshwater canals and all kinds of exotic fish in the salt water canals. My uncle nets in at least 3, 5 gallon buckets filled with all kinds of eating sized fish, some species don’t even have a bag limit. The best tasting are Tilapias and sheepshead. I bought a 20 lbs cast net thinking I was going to become pro, but it’s way too heavy for me, and after falling into the canals a couple times because of failed casts I gave up. Uncles getting old and so no more free fish like before.

Crawfish traps work as well, just make the opening narrower on the verticle.

@@TheTurbineEngineer I did find a larger one that had a chum block slot. Bought it in islamorada and was warned to be careful because this size of trap (24 x 24 x 24 inches) is stolen frequently in the water. It was a custom trap so no names or brands on it. They were right. Stolen on the first day in Marathon. Did find another pin fish trap with a chum block slot (12 height 24 length and widith) at Big Dog Tackle in Pompano Beach. Also custom made and it is perfect. Not too big and definitely not a small one. Just right.

They are easy to make yourself with hardware cloth, some snips and hognose ring pliers. Sell some to your buddies.

The entryways into the trap are vertical, so the crabs have a tough time getting in.

I think more effective live but they work good cut too

Live for cobia, grouper, etc., better to cut “tails” for trout. (I still call them “shiner tails” because when I began in the mid to late 1950s, guides and locals in the Appalachee Bay area I fished called pinfish “shiners.” I’ve never found a trout bait better than shiner tail.
