Its dumb to put big wheels slim tires on these cars. They werent designed for it. Unless you buildin a full blown race car with custom suspension you shouldnt put wheels that are too big It'll ruin the handling and wont improve things at all... It'll look dumb too

take care of your knees , also under hard acceleration you want the ring and pinon , and drive shaft , and trans tail end to be in a straight line . angle shim the diff down and some times angle shim the engine and trans up . it takes time to find the angles.

I used an adjustable snubber on my 1971 Dodge Demon 340, and my1965 273 stick Formula S Barracuda back in the 70's Both cars hooked extremely hard. Got my carb tuning tips from Ed Hamburger at MOPAR and the info he gave me on the Cater thermo quad was invaluable for my 71 340. It made that carb work like a charm.

for me...nothing left the line like the big mopars of the early 60s...nothing... i was under the impression they actually did very little over stock. like you said tony...unclamped the rear spring binder on super/stock springs and shocks and a top quality or custom-made snubber adjusted to a T.. some cars had 6-popper torsion bars and 90/10s but some were stock....the whole car would stand straight up, leave tall and straight down the track. stand up again at gear changes too....nothing else like em at the digs..they seemed almost, catlike...for me, what else really is there as far the proper way to lauch a car?...cause man do those cars launch.

Getting a Hot rod To Hook and not gobble up the power due to improper pinion angle, the wrong spring tension, or position, the wrong shock setups, the wrong front end geometry and floatation, the center of balance compared to the rear suspension, and transferring the power to the rear tires without burning the tires off can be a real challenge. Tire size, air pressure, the gear, the stall, the suspension, everything equates to hooking or spinning. Mopar made leaps and bounds in that area tweaking the suspension, pinion angle, front suspension till they got it right or real damn close way back when the factory 4 high-performance big players were battling it out. Many young guys give it no thought, and even more, want to burn rubber, so hooking isn't what they are after. BUT on race day you better be well set up or you have lost the day out of the gate or should I say Off The Line. I'm rebuilding my 35 Chevy again, not for more power, but a better suspension to utilize the power. I've gone from seeing nothing but the blue sky to nothing but rubber smoke and have to dial it in. I don't want to add ballast, so I'm reworking the suspension from front to back, and still using the original 1935 Chevy front straight axle. It takes a lot of learning to get it right and video's like Tony's help more than one can imagine until they face these issues and have to think it through ten ways from Sunday adding all the prior attempts gaining more insight and having a feel for what will get the job done. Tony is one of those guys who have been down this road and knows how to not only explain it in laymen's terms but puts the rubber to the road down and dirty in real time. It's those Tid Bits of information that can make all the difference in the world. Thanks again, Tony.

Here's a little twist to confuse the issue, modern grudge and radial cars actually use a lifting type of rear suspension. A fellow Tuber named John Doc has a racing 4 link, with essentially a torque arm that mimics a pinion snubber, in that it raises the chassis and drives the tires into the track. They do this specifically to limit the upward movement of the front and put as much weight as possible (without a huge wheelie), into the rear tires. We are also talking about guys, that are running something like 1500-2500 HP in a street appearing race car, with computers that can do minute changes as needed to control the car as well. This is a cool thought on it though, nice vid

I think he may have been peddling the car for not having us number, and didn't change the the way in which he peddled the car when it had this number on it. That will quickly lose you a 10th to 10th and 1/2. Great explanation, however I have seen people increase their quarter mile times by softening their launch

So what would be the traction set up for a hard side wall tire? No pi ion snubber like you said, but do you still want soft leaf springs or stiff ones? Do you still want to unclamp the springs behind the wheel and perform the same set up to the front of the car?

Question for Uncle Tony. My v8 stick shift 8.8 rear swapped s-10 wheels hops like a motherfucker. I mean anytime you floor it in the 1st three gears that bitch is hopping violently... anything not tied down ends up in the floor, radio and gauges fall out of the dash, you cant see where you are going kind of wheel hop. It sucks ass! I despise the look of slapper bars and I'd prefer not to spend the money on a legit set of caltracs... Any suggestions that are not caltrack or slide a link expensive besides slapper bars? Iv'e tried clamping the leaf springs together and it helps but the ride is so bad its not worth it.... I daily the truck 60 miles a day.

I'm getting ready to build a Gremlin. I'm hoping to find an 8 3/4 rear end so I can use a pinion snubber, even if I have to build a crossmember for it to work on. Also, AMC's have biased leaf springs like Mopars so that's a big plus. The guy I'm buying the Gremlin from also has some 2dr Ramblers, and the springs are just one inch shorter than an A body, so I could theoretically use Mopar Super Stock springs by moving the spring mounts, and maybe a relocation kit would work on that. I'm not sure if that would work on the Gremlin, and being a hatchback I can't put the battery in the trunk because it doesn't have one. But if I end up using a fuel cell I'll have to make a box for it to keep the fumes out of the car, so making it large enough to hold a battery or two 6 Volt group 1's in series it should fit. I even thought about running two fuel cells, one with pump gas and the other with race gas for those weekend drags. Then I could adjust the timing and boost if I'm running a Newcomer stoker 6 cyl. He built one that made 664 hp, and I'd settle for 550 or so. Then I'd name the car Having Six. What do you think?

But he was known for his 440's they where everywhere he horde them I'm talking about a whole building full ... Pinion snubbers are a crutch for weak leaf springs. If you have axle wrap, you need a stronger front segment like a Mopar Super Stock spring. They also limit suspension compression travel to zero. Do not use on the street.
@UncleTonysGarage
@UncleTonysGarage 5 жыл бұрын
That's not true. Properly used, the snubber transfers initial torque reaction to a downward push on the axle
@cindytepper8878
@cindytepper8878 5 жыл бұрын
@David miorgan Actually when the snubber hits, it removes torsional stress from the tubes. Without a snubber the tubes are anchored by the leaf springs and they are keeping the pumpkin from twisting. The force going upward originates on the inner pinion bearing so the snubber is in almost the perfect spot

You talk a lot about weight above and below the axle center line. And now seeing this video makes me wonder, what does the weight of the front end do when it comes slamming back down and you have the little to no resistance shocks up front as opposed to old solid axle thick leafed gassers? Does that weight that drops below hold under for too long, ending up being more trouble than having a stiffer suspension up front?

On a light cars with slicks and snubbers and hp ive seen a couple people have some bad days cuz even tho pinion cant go higher the housing gets thrown down and separates so far from body because of extreme leverage the pinion angle still goes extremely high and shafts get tossed out. I like superstock springs with extra front leafs. Mine are homemade with 5 regular leafs and 3 more just towards front. This is on a Maverick. A friend of mines 340 4speed 69 Dart has tossed probably 5 or more driveshafts with his standard leaf snubbed 8 3/4
