You got to be crazy, you gotta have a real need
You gotta sleep on your toes and when you're on the street
You got to be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed
And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight
You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking
And after a while, you can work on points for style
Like the club tie, and the firm handshake
A certain look in the eye and an easy smile
You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to
So that when they turn their backs on you
You'll get the chance to put the knife in
You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder
You know, it's going to get harder, and harder, and harder
As you get older
Yeah, and in the end you'll pack up and fly down south
Hide your head in the sand
Just another sad old man
All alone and dying of cancer
And when you lose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone
And it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw around
So have a good drown, as you go down all alone
Dragged down by the stone
Gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused
Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used
Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise
If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this maze
Deaf, dumb and blind, you just keep on pretending
That everyone's expendable, and no one has a real friend
And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner
Everything's done under the sun
But you believe at heart everyone's a killer
Who was born in a house full of pain
Who was trained not to spit in the fan
Who was told what to do by the man
Who was broken by trained personnel
Who was fitted with collar and chain
Who was given a pat on the back
Who was breaking away from the pack
Who was only a stranger at home
Who was ground down in the end
Who was found dead on the phone
Who was dragged down by the stone
Who was dragged down by the stone

In 1977 I was in the 8th grade. I walked to the Record Store, yes a store full of just vinyl records and rock posters. Animals had just been released and was on display up front. Using my lawn mowing money I picked up a copy. I had listened to Floyd on the radio, Dark Side and Wish You and likes it. Any way I took my $4.99 Animals album home, put on the headphones and listened to it front and back all night long. It hit me so hard that the music changed my life. I talked my folks into a loan and bought a 64 Gibson LP jr and a Vox amp from a kid my older sister knew. Animals started me on a life long journey. I’ve played all over the world, purchased a home and put my kids through school as a first call studio musician in Detroit. It never would have happened if I passed on Animals and instead pick up the latest Bee Gees album. Thank Dave and Roger

Around 5:00 I always remember the first time I heard this. It was early spring, more like late winter. The countryside was wet and cold, brown and dead. The sun shyly shone through the clouds. I could feel the gentle breeze of slowly warming air and the giant gaping hole in my heart at that particular time. Both that painful feeling and this music were absolutely new to me then. I was somehow shocked by the grim beauty of it all, and, perhaps subcounciously, I was savouring the raw youthful intensivness of it. Pink Floyd really became a soundtrack to some important moments in my life.

I think roger is talking about malignant narcissists. As their youth and charm fade with age so does their power, especially considering all the family and friends they’ve used and discarded over the years. They become more bitter and ugly and alone.

This song can mean a different thing to each person. Great songs do that. Yes life is hard. It gets harder as you grow older, especially if you don’t make right negative behaviors done in the past. A karma thing.
@comeupandseememakeme
@comeupandseememakeme Жыл бұрын
@@GetRealMusic1 When we are all young and full of piss and vinegar we have an amazing ability to see truth and describe what we see. We see past present and future when we are all at that sort of age when we are full of ourselves it's kind of around 25 to 30 when we are like this. The best music is made in this age range since the introspectiveness produces truly profound lyrics that tell truth and Roger was doing this in this song. In fact Roger became what he is describing for sure. We all heard how he began frankly hating on other band members complaining they didn't contribute blah blah blah. He broke Floyd cause he began to become what he described in these lyrics. Roger took his lucky break and broke it in two and he never did anything worthwhile after he destroyed Floyd his career ended when he broke that band due to his own personality disorders. It was a self fulfilling prophecy. The lyrics were profound cause he was pulling a 'Nostradamus' and predicting his own future too. We are all narcissists its just who is the biggest narcissist of us all. I'm and Englishman like Roger and I can say they are a brilliant but brutal race of people. I really hate the English even though I am one too. Roger is a true Englishman brutal narcissistic but brilliant. Brilliant race of people the English are but god they are so toxic and so was/ is Roger Waters. This man told his own truth.
@joe1972
@joe1972 7 ай бұрын
@comeupandseememakeme I'm Italian American. What you say about Englishmen I feel is spot on, they're extremely intelligent but often toxic as well. Off topic, but my grandfather was full blooded Italian and carried the negative traits of passion, think of the argumentative honeymooners, Italians are known for. My dad had it, but less so, tho he too made mountains of molehills. I'm only a quarter Italian, and distanced myself from my romantic arguing relatives... Anyway, Roger, as you described so well, did the band in and I only now realize from what you explained, in his lyrics here, he was prophetic of his own as well as Pink Floyd's demise.

This is their best album from an acoustic standpoint imo and the 'Dogs' track is sheer brilliance - Waters and Gilmour blend well not forgetting Wright and Mason too - pure quality - peace and love :-)

Even though there may be plenty of great examples of Dave's guitar playing, for me the second solo starting at 5:30 has been a reason this is my favourite Floyd album to listen to.......enjoy.

There are 3 types of Floyd Fans. Fans who know the The Division Bell and the Wall etc, then there are Fans of Dark Side and there are those who understand this band's from Animals point of view. If you don't get this then no point.

Difícil dizer qual melhor álbum ,TDS são uma obra prima ,mais fácil dizer o menos apreciado pelo público em geral e esse é o "The final CUT" e ainda sim tem 2 músicas nesse álbum que ultrapassam muitos discos de outras bandas por aí , The final CUT e NOT Now John ,clássicos

This is Battersea power station in South London. Its a fairly phenomenal piece of Victorian architecture which was closed down in the 1960s(?),it remained abandoned until 2000s (?) Currently being turned into a shopping mall and executive flats. The smoke is fake as it wasn't doing nothing in 1977. The smoke is fake as it wasn't doing nothing in 1977.
