As a kid I loved this song (mostly for the chorus). But as an adult, this song speaks to me more as I am listening to the lyrics and seeing what is going on in our schools. Even when I was younger, I saw all what Pink Floyd is talking about. It is one of those songs that is elevated to the "ALWAYS RELEVANT" status in music!

The problem is that 'we' made a couple of fundamental mistakes. We 'threw out the baby with the bathwater'. The intro here states that *some* teachers were guilty of being overbearing, punitive, and attempting thought control, plus the context of the verse is the reaction of children, who tend to generalize things & often didn't enjoy having to go to school. (also, in many western nations, education & teacher training were improved greatly after the era of Roger Waters' formative years) Consequently, people failed to recognize that this album does not represent a condemnation of education, but was filled with sharp criticisms levied against specific types of people who psychologically victimized Roger Waters & many other children in post-war England.
