Unfortunately, many people view Meddle as just a sort of "transitional" album that bridges the gap between Syd's freeform psychedelic era and Waters' sophisticated storytelling era. But for me, this album is arguably THE truest representation of Floyd's sound, because it was created with fairly equal input from all 4 members and wasn't dominated by just one member's vision for the band.
@Mjumbojetpresdent

agreed. Ummaguma too. I think it's more in line with what Gilmour imagined for the band. And he was right, imo. They still never got to explore as much of this pure psych sound as they could.

March 10, 1973 the CWRU dorm quad local dealer ran into me when I was headed to the gym. He wanted to know if I'd take a ride with him to Kent State, he needed inventory. I didn't think long, grabbed two buddies and off we went. Pulled in, parked behind a dorm with C A M P K E N T in the windows. Dealer does his business, puts it in the trunk and asks if we need to get back to Cleveland. I said I didn't. He said he had picked up four tickets for a concert in Memorial Gym. Who's playing? Pink Floyd. They opened with Echoes. We made zilches to Echoes. Take a garbage bag and twist it until it won't twist any more, put a few knots in it. Tie it up on a coat hanger, put a garbage can with water under it and light the bottom. Drink a bit, toke a bit, listen and watch. So off to the races with Echoes followed by the entire Dark Side of the Moon album which wasn't released in the US until April. Encore closer, One of These Days! Speakers set up around the tops of the bleachers so the sound traveled round & round. What a concert and amazing to think that it was 50 years ago. And I did graduate with a BS and Honors! I'm 70 years old and have been listening to PF for 52 years.

Lyrics: One of These Days: “One of these days, I’m going to cut you into little pieces!” A Pillow of Winds: A cloud of eiderdown Draws around me softening the sound Sleepy time when I lie With my love by my side And she's breathing low And the candle dies When night comes down you lock the door The boot falls to the floor As darkness falls the waves roll by The seasons change The wind is warm Now wakes the owl, now sleeps the swan Behold a dream, the dream is gone Green fields A cold rain is falling In a golden dawn And deep beneath the ground The early morning sounds and I go down Sleeping time when I lie With my love by my side And she's breathing low And I rise like a bird In the haze and the first rays touch the sky And the night winds die Fearless: You say the hill's too steep to climb Chiding You say you'd like to see me try Climbing You pick the place and I'll choose the time And I'll climb the hill in my own way Just wait a while for the right day And as I rise above The tree-line and the clouds I look down Hear the sound Of the things you said today Fearlessly the idiot faced the crowd Smiling Merciless the magistrate turns 'round Frowning And who's the fool who wears the crown Go down in your own way And everyday is the right day And as you rise above The fear-lines in his brow You look down Hear the sound Of the faces in the crowd San Tropez: As I reach for a peach Slide a rind down behind The sofa in San Tropez Breaking a stick with a brick on the sand Riding a wave in the wake of an old Sedan Sleeping alone in the drone of the darkness Scratched by the sand that fell from my love Deep in my dreams and I still hear her calling If you're alone, I'll come home Backward and home-bound The pigeon the dove Gone with the wind and the rain on an airplane Born in a home with no silver spoon I'm drinking champagne like a good tycoon Sooner than wait for a break in the weather I'll gather my far-flung thoughts together Speeding away on a wind to a new day If you're alone, I'll come home And I pause for a while By a country stile And listen to things they say Digging for gold in a hole in my hand Open the book, take a look at the way things stand And you're leading me down to the place by the sea I hear your soft voice calling to me Making a date for later by phone And if you're alone I'll come home Seamus: I was in the kitchen Seamus, that's the dog, was outside Well, I was in the kitchen Seamus, my old hound was outside Well, you know the sun was sinking slowly But my old hound-dog sat right down and cried Echoes: Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air And deep beneath the rolling waves in labyrinths of coral caves The echo of a distant time comes willowing across the sand And everything is green and submarine And no one showed us to the land And no one knows the where's or why's But something stirs and something tries And starts to climb towards the light Strangers passing in the street By chance two separate glances meet And I am you and what I see is me And do I take you by the hand And lead you through the land And help me understand the best I can? And no one calls us to move on And no one forces down our eyes No one speaks and no one tries No one flies around the sun Cloudless every day you fall Upon my waking eyes Inviting and inciting me to rise And through the window in the wall Come streaming in on sunlight wings A million bright ambassadors of morning And no one sings me lullabies And no one makes me close my eyes So I throw the windows wide And call to you across the sky

It’s probably because Echoes is the top track on the album, the greatest song of all time and its length is too long for radio stations to air which must’ve depleted its chances of major popularity. Personally I believe it’s Dark Side of the Moon, Meddle & Wish You Were Here in no particular order. Animals & Atom Heart Mother are next in line, Pink Floyd was in their absolute prime in the 70s.

Yes, speaking of timeless, I was listening to this in the park before high school in the mornings in 1976, and it still sounds every bit relevant as it did as a stoned teenager. I'm still captivated by the live versions of their early classics, and when I hear "Set the controls..." or "Echoes", or "Saucerful.." in the live early versions, I still feel the welcome sense of mystery that life so easily affords to an open mind and heart, no matter the age I am or that I live in. I think it is their masterpieces, in a way (even if I LOVE The Wall for instance !)...

Dainese Aldo.

Overhead the albatross hangs motionless upon the air And deep beneath the rolling waves In labyrinths of coral caves The echo of a distant time Comes willowing across the sand And everything is green and submarine And no-one showed us to the land And no-one knows the wheres or whys But something stirs and something tries Now starts to climb towards the light Strangers passing in the street By chance two separate glances meet And I am you and what I see is me And do I take you by the hand And lead you through the land And help me understand the best I can And no-one calls us to move on And no-one forces down our eyes No-one speaks and no-one tries No-one flies around the sun Cloudless everyday you fall upon my waking eyes Inviting and inciting me to rise And through the window in the wall Come streaming in on sunlight wings A million bright ambassadors of morning And no-one sings me lullabies And no-one makes me close my eyes So I throw the windows wide And call to you across the sky

Meddle, my first Floyd album bought before Darkside of the Moon came out. This and Ummagumma were my favourites. I thought they had sold out and gone commercial with DotM. Echoes is still my favourite but the live versions on Ummagumma still rock for me and Grantchester Meadows is an unsung masterpiece. Saw them live during the first DotM tour where they also previewed Shine on you Crazy Diamond and played Echoes as the encore...heaven!
