The wall, to me, is the sound of depression, anxiety, and longing. It’s been a part of my life, but upon my first listen, front to back, I cried. The sound of the instruments practically screaming had me feeling anything for the first time in almost a decade, after many toxic, and abusive relationships.

“Dont leave me now” ending feels exactly like the instruments crying and screaming with depression over you. Pink floyd’s really from another dimension, im just so glad that im alive to live it.

I met David Gilmour in 1984 back stage at a concert in Hollywood Calif. He gave me a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know

man if I meet him ever. we could have become good freinds. I heard the solo album on the island when I was 5 and I did countless preformances with my parents being the audience. If I could tell him that I care for most of his solo work more than the pink floyd records. he would flip.

That segment in The Wall really hit me. I was in a very similar situation to that (including the 360p version of the movie with Russian subtitles) I had gotten to the point where I just didn’t wanna keep going, but The Wall gave me hope that if Pink could tear down his wall then so could I. Thank you for sharing your experiences with the album, it’s oddly comforting to hear someone else on that topic because it truly makes me feel like I’m not alone. I hope you’re in a better place mentally, and I hope you have a nice rest of your day :)

The wall saved me, Was like my closer friend during my school days, I was raised by my mother and my dad just was never in my life, The album was like having someone who understands you and tells you that you'll find the way that the bleeding hearts and artist would make you through so I totally feel you, a lot see the wall as the wall that ended the band but ending is something natural for musicians as they grow and thinking that the wall is that end of an era I can only say it was their highest musical and emotional piece of work, simply the best and what makes a great band to step up to the band

Thank you for your beautiful and uplifting story. I've said in the past that once you "get" Pink Floyd, it forever alters your worldview because you can't "un-get" Pink Floyd. Very few bands (expecially rock bands) impart true wisdom but Pink Floyd does. Clearly, when we say that Pink Floyd's music is life-altering, you are living proof that it's true. I believe that Roger Waters would love your story because I think that he'd find it fulfilling. After all, this is why, Roger wrote us THE WALL. (You know what tune to use when reading that, cheers!)

I loved your interpretation of The Wall. Growing up it was my favorite PF album. Now it would be hard to say what my favorite is but it is Darkside, WYWH, Animals & The Wall. Sometimes I tend to like one more than the other but we agree their 70’s material is fucking amazing!!! I also love Dave Gilmour’s first solo album from 1978. You would love it if you don’t already. Comfortably Numb & Run Like Hell were supposed to be on that solo album but he held off and saved them for Floyd. Great Video!!!!

Great vid! I generally have a similar ranking, but I can never pick just one favourite album (although Echoes is decidedly my favourite song of theirs.) Your story is very touching and it reminded me of the dark times I went through when I first found The Wall, and how I would listen to it over and over again, whether it made me feel better ...or sometimes worse. It was just so cathartic either way. I didn't fully get the concept for a while but the album made me feel understood. That's the power of The Wall, I guess! Oh, and it's cool you mentioned Wearing The Inside Out - no one ever talks about that song but it's an excellent little hidden gem.

A lot of the stuff you have said in context to the wall is something I relate with, it's why I love the wall too, personally I love echoes and wywh because I was listening to this while going through this. Echoes has really pulled me out of the lows, just like wywh makes you feel not good, it's how the wall makes me feel, it's the album that has to be played or the movie that has to be watched at the right time. The movie has also made me cry for the same reasons, in the flesh, thin ice, mother, nobody home and the show must go on hit me hard, especially with the buildup to the show must go on, saying that it's ok, that you must push on is such a strong message. I'm so happy that you have found the album that means so much to you, that has helped you so much, that's a big thing about good albums and music, it hits you hard, it means a lot, it hits you deep.

Thank you for being true and honest about your opinion on the albums and some songs. I hope you I listened and watched through it all and i do like when someone truly says what they think and not what all others think about it and base their opinions of their saying and not their own thoughts. I hope you are feeling better within yourself nowadays. I was going through a tough time in life when i found out Pink Floyd. I got dumped by my ex at the time and started smoking weed a lot but then i found Pink Floyd and their meaning behind life itself, changed my inner feelings forever and helped me get through my depression at the time. They have since then been my favorite band of all time and my life is better nowadays. Music is one of the best things we have in our world together with nature. It's unlikely you will see this given it's a year later, but I just wanted to say Thank You for every second of this video. It was recommended on the exact day at the exact time in the exact location to be exactly what I needed to hear for maximum positive effect - AND earned you another sub. Beyond that, as the resident Floyd scholar in my social circles, my uber-fandom will lead some to dismiss my claim that not only is it reductive to call Pink Floyd music depressing, it has tremendous power to lift the depressed out of their malaise, if they are receptive. The band's message more often than not wasn't "society sucks", but rather "this may be how the world works right now, but it doesn't HAVE to be". Thanks for elucidating my point better than I ever could.

This reminds me of an interview where the interviewer talked about ABITW Part 2 being anti-education and Roger Waters was quick to clarify that it wasn't anti-education, it was just arguing for BETTER education. You said we could chime in soooooo.... 1. More: A lot of people cite The Nile Song as being proto-heavy metal. 2. ASFOS was the PF/Syd swan song. Being a Syd Barrett fan, I like it for nostalgia sake, but don't often listen to it except for Let There Be More Light, because why it's side one, cut one. 3. You have courage to bring up Louder Than Words, being that was early Polly Samson influence. I'm sure she's a lovely person, and admire her for her devotion to David and family. But she's no Roger Waters...I'm not a fan. 4. OBC, you said you watched More, did you ever watch La vallée? 5. PATGOD is "The" Pink Floyd, in many ways a completely different band. The US release had See Emily Play as side one, cut one. I heard that song on AM radio when I was 11 years old (sadly, omitting Bike). As I mentioned above, I'm a fan of Syd, so I actually consider this album separately from the rest (and best). 6. Atom Heart Mother has a second side? (Footage from Musikforum Ossiachersee gets bonus points!) 7. WYWH was Waters filled with guilt. As their commercial success grew, I believe he had remorse about leaving Syd behind. Fortunately for Syd, Relics brought additional publishing revenue to his purse. 8. Animals was Roger Water's lefty emotions bubbling to the surface. Which is rich, considering his increasing wealth. But the guitar solo bursting in at 8:07 on Sheep is pure joy. 9. Thank you for sharing your personal story re: The Wall. That was very cool of you and I totally wish you well and send good juju your way. As for the album, I have too many outside opinions on it to like it much (the interpersonal relations of Pink Floyd at this time, and how much of it is drawn directly from Syd Barrett's life without apology) however, I do love the song Run Like Hell. Believe it or not, that was being played on KROQ (famous alternative rock station in LA if you're not from there) and nobody cared that it was Pink Floyd, it was just good! Good job on this! I hope you continue to create! Your narrative was well written and flowed. The graphics and editing job rocks. (By the way, my avatar is a screen grab of Syd from the second Arnold Layne video: "Why can't you see?")

It’s so interesting to me how Floyd rankings differ so much, that’s a testament to how great they truly are. For me personally I’m a huge fan of experimental music and jazz so I choose the early albums (Even Ummagumma but with the exception of Several Species) over Lapse of Reason, Division Bell, or the Final Cut any day. Just love the emphasis on exploration and improvisation the early era had, and nick masons drumming was really inspired too. One key to really digging this era is to listen to it without any biases on what music should be. It’s avant-garde, it’s not meant to be listened to like you would conventional structured music. It’s not going to make you dance, it’s not going to woo you with words, its not going to caress your ears lol, it’s reaching for something deeper and imaginative. There’s lots of great 20th century classical composers with an experimental approach, two of my favorites being Olivier Messiaen and Igor Stravinsky.

All I can say about Piper at the Gates of Dawn, in terms of the landscape of music in 1967, is put on Piper, then put on Buffalo Springfield's first album, two totally different sides of the spectrum of what was happening at the time (you'll either love or hate it but I think these albums have a good representation of music at the time, excluding what the Beatles were doing of course)

Ok first off, no hate at all towards you, but I love Dark Side! I respect you like crazy though for putting it that low. I feel like sometimes people feel they HAVE to rank it at the top bc “it’s just the best” but there are things wrong with it, IE the personal touch of the Wall. Great ranking man!

I doubt you’ll see this but I need to post it anyways just to say thanks. Because our stories are oddly extremely close to one another I too am transfem, and after my own mental breakdown, The Wall saved me. And it too is my favorite Floyd album for that reason. The isolation, mental torture, and anger all spoke to my mindset at the time (minus the fascism part lol). And it’s wild to see someone who went through almost exactly what I did and connect with the exact same album. It’s oddly validating. So thank you so much for

Did you know that animals album was inspired by the book Animal Farm... The book is well baisicly the album! I really recommend it (the book) because it is short and from what I understand it talks about how the soviet union turned into a dictatorship. Also I just find it really funny how more is my favourite album but almost every ranking on yt puts it really low on the list. Idk I just love all the tracks including spanish piece and quicksilver. Up the kyber and the party sequences are not that great but it is still my favourite album... Cirrus minor, the nile song, the crying song, green is the colour, cymbaline, ibiza bar, more blues, dramatic and main theme these are some of my favourite songs. Also this is probably the best ranking I've seen so far and not because of the numbers the albums go to but because you really did a good job explaining why you put the album so low/high on the list Good job man Edit: good job girl :)

Huge Thank You for giving praise to the More Blues! Maybe the most underrated gem in Floyds history. I admit in my ranking More also doesn´t make more than No 10, but with this I´m obviously well above most people´s rankings.

They actually had a live show that’s exactly what you described of a combination of the best songs from More and Umma Gumma. It was called The Man and the Journey and the whole thing can be found in their 1969 early years playlist. It’s a very good listen and every song is better than the studio versions probably besides The Narrow Way Pt 3

Every time I feel as if I’m being rejected by everyone and everything, I sit down alone and listen to the Wall. After the album is over, I emerge feeling refreshed, stronger, and in better control of my own life. Pink Floyd is a better medicine than 95% of what mental doctors tell you.
