I like this album a lot. It's not my favourite PF album but it's a very interesting album and a great debut. It's definitely more their psychedelic sound than their progressive rock sound that they'd master in the 70s. I'd personally give it a 8.50/10. Tragedy what happened to Barrett. He was a one of a kind.

Agreed. Even Waters’ song somehow works with the album, given that most of it is an instrumental jam that highlights Syd’s guitarwork and Rick’s organwork. And that ending: “real eyes, realize, real lies”. I must have heard the entire album thousands of times. It’s by far the most played album of my life. It’s been a while since I’ve heard it, since I’m taking a break after overplaying it, but I can’t wait to get back into it again after I move out and start a new life. And most definitely when I can afford better audio equipment to truly soak up every sonic detail. Can’t express enough how much of a huge impact this album’s had on me. Be sure to check out the mono mix, if you haven’t. It’s 10 times better. The panning is gone, but you get more psychedelic effects and overdubs, and a solid heavier sound to make up for it. Perhaps the greatest mono mix of all time.

Nice review. I know this album isn't as good as the ones of the 70s. But is one of my favorites because I love that late 60s sound of psychedelic rock. And this album was very influential in that regard. Also I feel that the early albums were more emotional(?)...maybe... Matilda mother is probably my favorite track.

Psychedelic rock is the music of the future. In the 2000’s-2010’s, there was a brief revival with bands like Animal Collective and MGMT releasing more accessible as well as more extremely experimental psychedelic albums. And then artists like Tame Impala, Grizzly Bear, Morgan Delt, and others entering into the picture, generating a lot of fans and interest from indie music critics. I feel like innovation in the genre is currently at a standstill, but it’s still the genre most likely to generate innovation. It borrows a lot from jazz and avant-garde, in its improvisation and desire to stray completely from the norm. To me, structural innovation is a necessity in music, and there is no genre in rock where that is more present than psychedelic rock, in my honest opinion, with progressive rock coming in a close second.

Hi. A solid review. It took quite a while for me to get into this album. But I had to play a lot of their albums several times to get into, except Animals and The Wall. Both are my favorite Pink Floyd albums. Now I consider Piper the best of the early Pink Floyd era up till 1971. Pow R. Toc. H. Is in my opinion the most difficult song of this album to get into. Bike, I think, is the best. I sometimes wonder how Pink Floyd would have developped if Syd Barrett had stayed. Did you try and listen to Syd's solo albums The Madcap Laughs and Barrett? Give them a listen. You won't regret it.

“Pow R. Toc H.” is greatly improved in the mono mix. The piano solo appears in both speakers instead of one, the editing is more solid and has better timing with the instruments and vocals, and we get more vocal effects from Syd and Waters. And yes, Syd’s solo albums are a must.

Yes, the late comer strikes again! I'm going through a Floyd phase as of late. I really quite enjoyed this review . Yes, yes, yes, I agree with pretty much everything you guys just said. And I also agree that Pow R Toc H and Take Up Thy Stethoscope... are the weaker moments on the album, that having been said, I think almost the whole album is quite fun to listen to... even if listened to alongside the relevant singles that they released at the time (Arnold Layne, See Emily Play and Apples And Oranges). I would also recommend checking out their other late sixties records, like A Saucerful of Secrets (transitional, but important if only for Syd's last couple of contributions and their first actual, linear, longform musical piece in the title track foreshadowing their future steps into artistic and conceptual styles), More and Ummagumma (I feel these to be lesser, meandering works but interesting in that these records show the individual band members experimenting with their composing skills, especially the emerging talents of Roger Waters and the newly recruited talents of David Gilmour, O.B.E.)

This is one of their albums that is better with repeated listening. It's very crisp and treble - somewhat like LSD. If you can get by the production values, the melodies that are there are very catchy and original. 'See Emily Play' was the first I ever heard from this period was not happy with it, but I couldn't get it out of my head. After repeated listening - ah, I get it. Nice tune.

It's been a while since I heard this album, and I remember 'Bike' for one being pretty interesting to boot...but 'Astronony Domine'...!!! Man, what an epic, game-changing piece of music that one must have seemed back then, yes? (And still is, of course...nevertheless, take a look at this clip at kzbin.info/www/bejne/q4XJdYivitCJj6c taken from a BBC arts programme discussing the Floyd in 1967, and which includes said track in full, to see what I mean...the poor interviewer didn't really know what had hit him, yes?!). Also, this live version of 'Astronomy Domine' at kzbin.info/www/bejne/nIDRlqOspZyEbrs taken from Floyd's 1995 farewell album, namely Pulse, is pretty darn groovy too; in fact, I know you guys don't really cover live albums - or at least, you haven't so far - but that one might well be worth making an exception for, yes...?

@@ReactionsToTheClassics You will find this view a lot in the psychedelic community. “Sgt. Pepper’s” is considered by many to be psychedelia-lite, a mainstream Trojan horse for people who normally don’t like psychedelic music. An album that is a collection of different genres of music, with only some songs strictly fitting into psychedelic rock, while essentially every song on “Piper” is psychedelic. A huge thing missing from “Sgt. Pepper’s” is the Swinging London sound, and the element of jazz-influenced improvisation that characterizes much of psychedelic rock, which was previously only strictly song-oriented. Apart from Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, and The Yardbirds to some extent, it was mainly American bands who started that trend, such as The Paul Butterfield Blues Band’s “East-West”, The Velvet Underground, The Doors, and all the San Francisco groups. The latter Pink Floyd never heard, as they weren’t able to get a hold of the records, but they did read the descriptions about those bands in the press. Interestingly enough, I find the Rolling Stones’ psychedelic album “Their Satanic Majesties Request” shares more in common with Pink Floyd than it does with The Beatles. That album features a couple long improvisations, and a grittier sound than The Beatles at the time.

It had a specific purpose to fulfill by reaching the most amount of people possible, and it succeeded with flying colors.
