Yes, Pink Floyd has so many awesome songs and you're right to say they are an experience. If you don't have respect and listen you might miss the nuances of what they're trying to say. I first started following Pink Floyd when I was in high school. Yes, I am a baby boomer. However their music is timeless . I graduated from high school in 1980, and Pink Floyd's The Wall was very popular that year. And just as a side, I did not totally appreciate the song comfortably numb until I became a drug addict and then I understood yep. The good news is I am clean and sober since 2010 I still love Pink Floyd. One of my favorite discoveries recently has been, learning to fly. It's an allegory probably all of our lives we don't know where we're going and we don't know what it takes but we just jump into it because that's the only choice have faith and not fear. Thank you bye-bye

“Back then”, the band was the star. People weren’t so self absorbed that they had to have their name branded on the product. Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, The Doors, ZZTOP, The Guess Who, The Eagles, are all bands loaded with world class musicians, and amazing vocalists, but rather than the individual, the band was the star 💫 We may be old now, but we had the coolest cars, the greatest chicks, and best music ever made, and that music will live forever. ✌🏼😎

The song is about the original co-founder of the band, Syd Barrett, who had mental problems made worse by using "acid" and had to be dropped from the band when he became unreliable. Pink Floyd are masters of emotion, ambience, and their instruments... they'll take you to worlds yet undreamt. Peace, love and bellbottoms from Canada.

This song is NOT about Syd, as Waters and Gilmour have said.
@lucianaciolfi
@lucianaciolfi 2 жыл бұрын
"Wish You Were Here" Meaning Like most of the songs on the album, Wish You Were Here is dedicated to the band's founder and former frontman, Syd Barrett, who was estranged from the group in 1968 due to serious mental problems caused by continued drug abuse. In reality this phrase is not associated with Syd Barrett, as many people think. Waters himself explained that in reality the "I wish you were here" was aimed at himself, being in a sense an internal monologue. The text is much more universal than you think. The question mark that arises is: "Can you be free even though life holds so many obstacles for you, or are you stuck (in a cage) until the end of your days?" Are you able to change, to adapt and not to remain stuck at the starting point until the end?
@psbarrow
@psbarrow 2 жыл бұрын
@@lucianaciolfi Waters and Gilmour have said (their own words) in "The Story of Wish You Were Here" that it's not ABOUT Syd (i.e. written with him in mind), even if they both dedicate it to him sometimes in gigs. That was my point to the OP.
@lucianaciolfi
@lucianaciolfi 2 жыл бұрын
@@psbarrow Yes, that's exactly what I said. 👌 The song is not designed for him but is dedicated to him during concerts. Among other things, the whole career of the group, in one way or another, revolves around the figure of Barrett and I find it a beautiful and touching thing, that they have remembered him all these years.

@@lucianaciolfi The legend also has it that when they were recording it, Syd had wondered into the studio that day unannounced and none of the band members recognized him. Not sure if it's true or urban legend, I'd like to believe it is.

It’s hard to explain the importance and influence of Pink Floyd because even the words ICONIC and G.O.A.T. is an understatement. This band wrote songs from such an introspective and pure place over the course of 40+ years and no other band could touch them. I highly recommend that you dive headfirst into this rabbit hole, my friend, because they will change you spiritually forever. I feel confident that if you react to the album DARK SIDE OF THE MOON in order (very important!) that you will understand what I mean.

It's not, "the singer needed a band" it's the singer is IN the band. 👍🏽😁 The instrumentalists are just as important as the singer. The music is just as important as the lyrics. Especially when different people sing Lead on different songs, and any number of instrumentalists are also Backing Vocalists. It is a group effort instead of one ego.

Bro I tell everyone who decides to react to Pink Floyd you can’t just do one song from an album of Pink Floyd. Every Pink Floyd album tells a story. And skipping around will cause most to not be able to full experience the story being told. David Gilmour is a guitar god! I suggest you take the time to either do one long reaction to the whole album or do the songs in succession. One does not simply listen to Pink Floyd one experiences. This album Wish You Were Here was a dedication to Syd Barrett who was the original frontman. Also you should go and check out some of David Gilmour’s live performances especially from Live in Gdańsk or live in Pompeii.

Pink Floyd is an album band. You throw the album on the turntable, sit down, and listen. Lots of their songs flow right into the next song on the album. They are a hugely influential psychedelic band. Their albums tell stories. Try "Comfortably Numb," "Money," "Run Like Hell," and then try " Shine On You Crazy Diamond." If you read their history, you'll read about Syd Barrett, the original leader and principal songwriter. Syd had some latent mental health issues that were exacerbated by his prolific use of LSD. He would stand without playing guitar or singing at gigs. He'd turn his back on the audience. The band ultimately brought in David Gilmore to play lead guitar and provide vocals. "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" and a few other songs were written as tribute to Syd.

"There's no band anymore". Yes, sadly that is true and an immeasurable loss to those of your age. Bands mean there are more than one contributor to the music experience and arrangements that take all of them and make them into a bigger whole. My generation had this in spades and we had an explosion of great music like what you just heard with a thousand different styles. You can still find it but it isn't what the music business really backs. Keep searching friend and you will find joy.

(I went out mid-day in my business suit, strapped on the gaffs, and climbed the pole in front of them that way, to show them it wasn't hard - already had years of experience myself). So we sat down in the warehouse, cooler full of beer, and I had them hear this album. MINDS BLOWN. Every single cadet showed up Monday for further training. Got a lot of Black people jobs in Chicago. A great deal of the digital music that is being remixed now was recorded by these bands from the 70s and 80s. And yes, the bands mattered greatly. The Eagles had multiple songwriters, multiple lead guitarists, and multiple lead singers; Supertramp had five great musicians, two great songwriters and two lead singers; the Doors had a jazz trained drummer, a classically trained keyboardist, a flamenco trained guitarist, and a poet for a lead singer; and on and on...

With Pink Floyd, you have to listen to the whole album. Not just one song off of their albums, especially this album and "Dark Side of the Moon." In fact, both albums have beginning and an ending that simply loops the listener into listening to it again and again over and over. I've left each of these albums in my car's cd player for months at a time. Absolutely great music to cruise down the highway. Chills you out in intense traffic and mellows you out when you have the highway to yourself and are taking in the great scenery. These two albums never get old. I've listened to both thousands and thousands of times.

Back in O.C. Calif when I was 30 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station (KMET - LA, “The Mighty Met”) to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio Cynthia Fox…. said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"... I met David Gilmour back stage. He gave us both a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. . I told him in my eyes he’s a “Legend“. He thanked me and said “Enjoy the show”…. during the concert after the song “Money” he looked right at me and said…. “On saxophone, another Legend, Mr. Raphael Ravenscroft” … acknowledging my comment to him. It is my favorite moment in over 300 shows I’ve seen. I asked David…. How do you create those awesome solos?… he said….. I sit on a stool and listen to what Roger, Nick and Rick put down and play along. I listen to what I played and pick out what I like, then I put the pieces together into one piece then learn to play it as one. Our fans are fanatics for our shows to sound like the albums so I must play it correctly each time in a show. I have the concert Brochure and album on the wall with David’s picture centerfold.

If you called your friend from the only ohone in the house which was in the kitchen on a short cord, and no one was home, the phone just kept ringing, not even answering machines in those days. You had no idea where your friend was. So we were on our own a lot and had time to think and wish someone was there.

Just on your own if you listen to "Dark Side of the Moon" from beginning to end non-stop and uninterrupted you WILL have an out-of-body experience! And most of all you won't be disappointed!! If you do one song from "Dark Side of the Moon" do "Time"! And with that song make sure you have lyrics!! You'll find with Pink Floyd not only is the music incredible but the lyrics are even better!!! One other song "Comfortably Numb"! With Pink Floyd they did albums with one song flowing into the next. You'll find each song is very different from the previous one! Playing "Wish You Were Here" that you just listen to is way different than "Time" is way different than "Comfortably Numb"!! Unlike many of the reactors to songs, you have a very calm and understanding demeanor! I think you'll go a long way if you keep it up!! Be careful with Floyd, that rabbit-hole doesn't have a bottom! They are the Mozart of a generation!

John Henke - Awesome post, man. You summed up the 'phenomenon' Pink Floyd perfectly. This was the music of my 'coming of age'. I turned 30 in 1975, the year this song came out, and it wasn't until then that I finally began to grow up. I was a late 'bloomer' so to speak - hope I'm a late 'wilter' as well.

@@2cawwa2 Music of any era, generation and genre is a subjective experience on the part of the listener. I understand where you are coming from in your rather expansive comment to John Henke, but being the age I am now it is a fact that I have met tons of people like you who seem to take special delight in picking apart someone's opinion ( ill informed as it might be ) by exhibiting their grand and exhaustive knowledge of someone like W.A. Mozart. So what!...so the guy was a child prodigy, a genius - perhaps even an idiot savant. I love his piano concertos, but you know what? There are times I'd rather kick back and listen to Delicate Sound of Thunder or Dark Side of the Moon or Wish You Were Here - and I didn't have to be a total dick 'saying' any of that! Now you know.

Definitely agree with the comment below, you really need to listen to the Dark Side of the Moon album in its entirety at one time. It was on the Billboard charts for 962 weeks in total. Divide by 52 and that’s almost 20 years.

Nice reaction. May I make a suggestion while picking out PF songs to listen to? Take the studio versions first before you do any of their Live stuff. Why? My personal belief is that I like to get to know the original song first. PF's live stuff is actually better than the studio takes (well...one or 2 songs are better with the studio version: Great Gig in the Sky and Shine on You Crazy Diamond). But the rabbit hole is a big one! If you like lead guitar and or good lyrics....my next choice for you would be the song "Time". Oh, and do the lyric version when you do PF songs. Don't let yourself get distracted. Just close your eyes and sit back.

You can't listen to one Pink Floyd song and think you can define them by it. Pink Floyd defies description except to say nothing is beyond them, they can do it all. All their albums are thematic and deserve to be heard as intended (all at once). There never has been and never will be another group like them,. Soaring talent.

I agree...listening to just a song from the album takes away from the entire album...you need to listen to them all in order to really really appreciate the sound. I hope that you TooBlunt go back and enjoy their entire albums from start to finish to really be taken away on that journey. Put your headphones on and just lay back with your eyes closed and feel the music not just listen

The album is a tribute to Syd Barret, one of the original members of the band. The previous album the Dark side of the moon album is the longest ever on the bilboard, from 1973. Listen to it from the first song till the last. every tune fits together. And you`re right, everything was done manually back then. Also try out the pulse consert from 94, every song that matters is on there. You wont live to regret it. You have my word.

Your final analysis of what PF music is all about is spot on. It's meant to be enjoyed in a relaxing environment, laid back after a long day. Sipping on a fine bourbon or wine or what ever relaxes you. It's meant to get lost in the music. PF is the master of "space" in their notes. When other bands of this era we're doing 5 min guitar solos, PF was layering in feelings and depth. It was GREAT back then and it's GREAT today.

I very much appreciate that you are experiencing this music exactly as it should be. You are listening so closely to the lyrics. You’re also analyzing the lyrics so deeply. You’re letting yourself be moved by the music when you feel it. This is super fucking dorky to say but it’s like you are listening with your heart. It’s delightful to watch.

Many people mistakenly think this is about Syd Barrett, but in an interview Roger Waters said quite emphatically that the only song on the WYWH album that was about Syd was "Shine on you crazy diamond". He went on to say that when he wrote the lyrics to Wish You Were Here he had in mind someone close who had refused to move on in life and had been left behind. He also said that at other times it meant something else, and that some days he didn't really know what it meant himself. He deliberately made the lyrics enigmatic so that the listener could make it mean whatever they wanted it to mean, and it has become an anthem for anyone who has lost someone close to them. The opening guitar chords were composed by David Gilmour who had in mind someone listening to a poor quality radio all alone in their bedroom late at night, and hearing the opening chords, and then joining in himself with the crisper sound of the second guitar. Overall, a stunningly beautiful composition, both instrumentally and lyrically, and a work of complete genius. I associate it with someone very close that I lost long ago and it never fails to bring a tear to my eye.

In rock, bands are still the standard. Even someone who goes solo in the studio will still need a backing band when they go live, and even in a group with an iconic lead singer, they will still go by the name of the group.

Many songs of the more popular Pink Floyd albums speak to the a founding member Syd Barrett. Roger Keith "Syd" Barrett (6 January 1946 - 7 July 2006) was an English singer, songwriter, and musician who co-founded the rock band Pink Floyd in 1965. Syd had drug and mental problems that ended with him leaving the group. Dark side of the Moon has a number of songs that speak to the mental health of us all. There is a documentary about the making of dark side of the moon that is streaming somewhere.

Trust me man, The Band is a concept that is so important but sadly forgotten nowadays. It's such a difference in quality (I may be biased but I don't care :) when it comes to using actual instruments live rather than a digital recording it's crazy. So many intricate parts going into recording a song like this or any other Pink Floyd song. Also listen to Comfortably Numb live and pay attention to all the moving parts in unison rocking at the same time, it will blow your mind.

For those who do not know where the name “Pink Floyd” came from…… Syd Barrett - original founder of the band had two favorite Blues Guitar Players in his record collection, two black men, Pinkney “Pink” Anderson and Floyd Council. One came from North Carolina, (Floyd) the other came from South Carolina, (Pink).

Great reaction! I'm witnessing a young man on the precipice of a long, amazing journey through the music of my youth. So many suggestions to make! Queen, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd are deep rabbit holes, as are many bands from the 60s and 70s, and other listeners can recommend from their incredible catalogs. I'm a new subscriber and cannot wait until you get into the antiwar protest songs of the late 60s and discover the many great singers and musicians from that period. Your must-listens began with this, 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and 'Whole Lotta Love', but you should soon do videos of The Rolling Stones 'Sympathy for the Devil' and ' Gimme Shelter,' 'Roundabout' from Yes, 'Baba O'Riley' from The Who, 'Sledgehammer' from Peter Gabriel and '2112' by Rush. I would also love to watch your reaction to 'Black Betty' by Ram Jam (almost a parody of the style) and "Hocus Pocus' by Focus (enough said). Enjoy your journey, Grasshopper!

Even way back then there were singers with hired backing musicians, and bands used studio session musicians too. But Pink Floyd, like many, many other bands, were a group of artists who created music collectively. Individual members might write a melody or a lyric, but the final recording was made by all of them together.

I’ve always been a rocker. My parents were fans of country and (1950’s-1970’s) rock, I attended several of those concerts with them. So 99.99% of my music is still authentic…singers actually singing without auto tune and musicians actually playing instruments. Most bands do have “backing tracks” when when playing live for parts that can’t really be done live. My favorite band, Halestorm, is one of the few exceptions, they do everything live, nothing taped. One of my weird little thrills is unexpected or unconventional instruments. - My first time seeing Skillet and being surprised by their cellist and violinist (who I think might also be a ninja. - Seeing the Nelson brothers performing their father’s music, as well as their own, and being backed by a wild man playing a standing bass. - Actually getting to see Motograter’s motograter (an instrument that they invented) - Being shocked seeing the Violent Femmes the first time, and realizing they have several unusual homemade instruments It’s also amazing to see a musician make an instrument do something you didn’t know it could do, like when it sounds like a guitar is talking. Or seeing them play in unconventional ways…he’s been gone for 50 years, but there’s still very few people who can do the things that Jimi Hendrix did…and after all these years, his version of the Star Spangled Banner 🇺🇸 that he performed at Woodstock ☮️💟is still my favorite. There’s a magic in the passion of a band, too, that’s different from a solo artist or an artist that goes on the road with their mix CD. It’s like a marriage, but with 4, 5, 6 people or more; working together and basically living together…on a tour bus, 45 weeks out of the year, for decades. AC/DC has been together for 49 years! You go to their concert, you can see and feel how passionate they are about their music, you can see they still love what they’re doing and still love playing together…and few people in their 20’s would be able to keep up with these “old dudes” on stage. And for a little extra magic, inspiration, dedication, ingenuity, loyalty and warm fuzzies, we have Def Lepard. You may think your eyes are deceiving you when Rick Scott first catches your attention, but then you realize that this drummer really does have just one arm. You’d never guess it by the sound. But what’s really amazing is he wasn’t born that way. In 1984, on tour for their third album, Rick’s left arm was severed in a car accident. That album was hugely successful, but the band said they wouldn’t go on without their drummer. Two years later, the band played the Monsters of Rock festival, debuting Rick custom drum kit. 🤘

To get a great idea of what Pink Floyd are, you really need to listen to Dark Side of the Moon. One of the best selling albums of all time and a masterpiece of music design. It's a concept album with tracks flowing one into the next. Plus, as others have said - Comfortably Numb from the Pulse show in 1995. David Gilmour delivers two of the most amazing solo's and is the best version of their song ever.
