This version of the Flame Mammoth stage is referred to as the cold version. The version of the stage before Chill Penguin is defeated is referred to as the hot version. The Heart Tank in this stage is intended to be collected in the cold version, but it's technically possible to collect it in the hot version. Doing the latter requires collecting and filling up Subtanks. On the other hand, defeating Storm Eagle makes the Spark Mandrill stage harder.

Because of this, nobody from his unit joined him in Sigma's rebellion. During the rebellion, Mammoth took over Abel City's industrial area for the purpose of converting it into weapon manufacturing. Mammoth's favorite tactic is to douse his enemies in oil from his trunk before setting them ablaze with his Fire Wave. Anything left will simply be crushed into powder under his titanic weight.

Oh god, that jump. I usually have to try about thirty times before I get it. Actually, X3 also has a few moments where beating a stage influences another. E.g. beating Blast Hornet removes some boxes from Gravity Beetle's stage. I think it also turns those red rocket-shooting enemies green. And then there's X6, of course, but we're not talking about that. Most charged weapons feel like they're just there to be flashy instead of useful. However, this game has one HUGE exception to that...

Guys, I’m having a very unique problem here. I make the jump at 0:45 without issue, but only the first block (lowest right one) breaks. He I spent 2 minutes spamming the jump button on the second block, but it never breaks. Anyone have any advice? I don’t know what to do here

X3 had a similar stage-changing feature. Killing Volt Catfish turned on the power in Blizzard Buffalo's stage and thawed the ice. Killing Blast Hornet made ALL the Headgunner's significantly weaker and removed the crates in Gravity Beetle's stage.

@cs31791 No, it did. They wanted to revive the system in a different manner based on the Investigator's Nightmares, meaning it's influenced by a certain boss-Dragonflies by C. Yammark, Darkness by I. Mijinion, and Rain by R. Turtloid.

I will also say he’s a pretty good Maverick to go for first if you wanna try to break from the recommended order. He’s slow and big and easy to hit, making him pretty reasonable to beat without the dash The remake even changed his stage to be where the dash is if I remember right. Like the devs wanted to try something to make the experience fresh and realized eh, Flame Mammoth is about as easy as Chill Penguin, why not?

Not sure if this was mentioned already but if you jump up one of those chutes that the junk bots fall out of, you can cross over a large portion of the level and enter into a bizarro version of the level where the pick axe bots are at. The level even changes backgrounds. Try it!

"That friggin' jump". As far as I remember, it's actually possible to land on the bottom 2nd row box, if you happen to destroy the bottom right one, and fall. It's friggin' hard, but it IS possible.

@1:37: I'm not going to begin to imagine what made you say that. At least most of the weapons' charged attacks are worth something and can be used well depending on the situation and the willingness of the player. Such weapons like Electric Spark, Flame Wave, Sting Chameleon's weapon, Kuwanger's weapon and Rolling Shield all have some utility if you put some thought into it. The ice sled from Shotgun Ice may help you get 1 or two items in the game as well.

Not necessarily. The lava doesn't insta-kill X like it does Mega Man in the Classic series (guess Dr. Light really did learn something from Mega Man) so it's possible to get the heart tank before beating Chill Penguin but not without taking damage.

Actually, this is part of shy I go for Storm Eagle first; Mammoth's stage is TOO easy if you already beat Chill Penguin. (Though he makes up for this in the GBC game he appears in; the fire that shoots out of the lava is a one-hit kill!) Yeah, the charged versions of most weapons in the X series fall into the "Awesome But Impractical" category.

I learned on accident if you stand close to flame mammoth his fire goes over ur head n ur safe as long as u don't hit wall w him avoid his jump he is the easiest boss if you can do this technique

I disagree with your assessment of Fire Wave. It actually does a lot of damage per hit. The trick is to only tap the fire button so that not only do you get a better rate of hits (1 hit per tap rather than however many hits per second if you just hold the button), but if you tap and release quickly enough it doesn't use any weapon energy.

Hnng. Didn't realize you had X series playthroughs. Time to catch up! As a note, that upgrade is actually optional. A later part of the story will force it upon you, in the exact same form, no changes, if you don't get the arm upgrade there. I actually prefer that method myself, less infuriating, after having done it the hard way so many times because I thought it was the ONLY way. Another fun note, you can cut off Mammoths trunk and stop him oiling the place with one of the special weapons, but it doesn't do extra damage to him. I thought that was a neat trick. Also, going to have to try that pipe people in the comments mention you can climb, never knew about anything like that.

+Zetro Hermit I actually prefer to skip getting the X-Buster in Flame Mammoth's stage, not because of the difficulty of the jump(though it can die in a fire), but because I like the added drama of Zero bequeathing his gun to X. Tangentally, one of the few things the PSP remake did right was make Zero's gun give you a different charge shot than the Dr. Light gun. I thought that was really cool.

CptJistuce using it is more or less irrelevant for the final stages. I really liked it back as a kid for dealing with the robot dog, but after that sigma was too much of a pain to hit with it in either form. These days I can deal with the dog just fine, so whenever I replay it for nostalgia I tend to just ignore it, even when I do pick it up.

Storm Tornado is ridiculously overpowered. It's like the metal blade of this game, and in my opinion superior to the metal blade. Flame wave is the energy devouring short range version that does slightly more damage and gets slightly more annoying to use after you get the buster upgrade. OF COURSE IT GETS BEAT BY THE TORNADO!
