Fun fact about Gideon (the cat that hangs out with a fox). Originally, he wasn't mute. Mel Blanc voiced him, but he gave Gideon a drunken voice and Disney didn't approve, so he just made him silent. Because of all the inappropriate things in this movie, a drunk sounding cat was just too much.

@kalublah

Pleasure Island is literally a place where boys make "jackasses" of themselves. It's like being a boy growing into an unlawful, unethical man. He destroys public property, he drinks and smokes and beats up other people. The context for pool is also in how Lampwick and Pinnochio talk to each other. They're no longer little kids, but acting like destructive young men, or what the 40s would interpret as thugs. Kids don't play pool that way, but young pompous men do to flounce how "adult" they are. Also, I don't find Stromboli's as offensive. He is definitely a stereotype, but as third gen Italian, I've seen my family find The Godfathers "ethics" as far more questionable/offensive than an obvious evil character from an old 19th century Tuscan children's serial novel. Typically Italians are pretty chill (so long as you don't get into what you accurately call the g-slur.) about this type of representation, otherwise a character like Mario would probably not exist. (An aside, Disney's choice of setting confuses me as almost everything in the film that isn't Stromboli's traveling cart is framed as either German or American in style. There may be something to this if Disney's change of setting is to highlight the appearance of Stromboli's traveling show, but that's splitting hairs imo.)

All those kids didn't deserve what they got. They were just little kids wanting to goof off. Deffo didn't deserve being turned into donkeys and sold into slavery. Suprised the live action remakes didn't improve that scene by...I dunno having Pinocchio tell his father and his father reporting them to the authorities? Live action remakes do tend to want to 'fix' problems in the originals. Even mistakes that weren't really there but some people like to moan. The scene where Pinocchio's mate transforms is heartbreaking to me still!

I don't think Stromboli's accent is racist, more like... really stereothypical. Since Pinocchio's an italian fairy tale they gave a really bad italian accent to Stromboli (whose real name is actually Mangiafuoco that means "fire eater")... but now that I think about it those were probably the years of italian immigration to America, so yeah it could be a little racist (dunno, i'm italian and i don't find it offensive, more slightly annoying)
@Nicamon

The funny thing is that they made Mangiafuoco/Stromboli Italian...and somehow Pinocchio and Geppetto aren't even if they have italian names!It's kinda like in"Beauty&the Beast"where the story takes place in France but somehow only Lumiere has a french accent!😵
