Rather than not do any cargo/freight, it might be more interesting to use freight to grow the other towns so that Faringdon, Harrow and Hoyle become the smallest towns on the map. That'll teach them!

I like the cut of your jib. In a slightly different timeline, I very well may have done that, but I have a slightly different plan in mind. :) Great suggestion!

Hey Pinstar, great idea with this series but I think you should re-roll the map and get something with decent cargo connections. The fact that we can mix passenger and cargo stations would also generate a lot of dynamic gameplay. I understand the game becomes harder to not do any cargo, but passenger only would just be boring!

Great idea with the hardcore gameplay, I am genuinely excited for that! However, I am concerned about two things: no water and no cargo strategy. The thing is that "Dry" maps doesn't really provide any ways to use water for freight. The reason being is that the water is placed at the very bottom of canyons, way down from the surface where nearby industries placed. Such differences in height (which is far bigger than the highest difference with mesas) basically eliminates any practical use of water. However, what water does is separating the land into sections with huge gaps on very high elevations, meaning that building even the shortest bridge would cost you millions because of how high the bridge would be from the lowest point of canyons. In the very beginning, it could cut you from half of the opportunities the map provides, as you would be forced to use places on either side of the rivers. That being said, by reducing water to zero, the "Dry" maps become easier! As for the no cargo strategy, this just eliminates major part of the gameplay experience, I hope you would reconsider that. Especially, since In TF2 you can start off with simply transferring Iron/Coal to the Steel refinery and already start making money from that! Iron/Coal by default has 400 production and shipping, which is basically free money waiting to be transported. Personally, I think it is way easier than the TF 1, but at least you could start off with that and make a solid foundation.

Why does everyone look for the 'best' starting locations every time? Start from a RANDOM corner and you start with whatever is there. Randomize every setting before you start - you get what you get. Don't forget the random corner. What is the 'end point' ? What is it to 'win'?

I know I'm getting to this late and I don't know anything about TF2, but I wonder how if you turned off shipping anyway removing all waterways makes it harder. I would expect turning off shipping but keeping the waterways would make it more difficult because it would require building bridges or going around the water.

how about a restriction on you can only use trucks for cargo to lower tier cargo and the more advanced only use planes and you can only use trains for passengers.

In the original game I did a play on mountainous terrain where I was avoiding trains for the cost. Eventually I decided I wasn't going to build ANY trains, or ships, or planes. I made $ very quickly. It made for a dull game that got really slow by the 1960s, but it was extremely profitable.

While I'm not strict about this enough to make it a full restriction, I told myself I would not settle into pure vehicle spam for this playthrough since that's what I did in my original. Vehicles are quite versatile and powerful in this one and are even more economical than the original since a declining condition doesn't cause them to cost more in upkeep letting you hold off on replacing anything that doesn't wander near residential zones until the next tech level with no penalty in running costs.

I’ve been waiting for this so thank you. Can’t say I’m excited about the “no cargo” rule as it seems it might make everything very simple with a connect the dots build plan. Are you sure you want to go that route?

No freight? Really? The playthrough merely becomes "connect the cities", first with road traffic, and then filling in tracks as $$$ allows and eventually a few airports. Sure in one sense a "restriction", but complexity-wise, you just made it a lot simpler. I hope you reconsider this self-imposed parameter. Having to start with the simpler products to grow small towns first sounds like a much more interesting challenge.

What I will likely do is do this as a no-freight in the beginning challenge. Once every town is connected, then get into freight to see if I can weave it into existing passenger network while seeing if my passenger network can grow to keep up with the growing cities once goods start flowing. I see passengers only as a restriction because the optimal strat is to grow two cities with cargo first and *then* connect them with passengers so you get higher volume.

Awww.... Pinstar.... what are you doing.... 1. I see you do a TF2 let's play on hard, i'm like: FINALY! - 2. the European Vehicles in Dry Setting: THAT'S JUST WRONG! - 3. No Cargo Rule: BUT BUT THOSE LONG FREIGHT TRAINS ARE SOOOOOO COOL! .... dammit :(
@Pinstar

I amended my no cargo rule to "No cargo until I hook up passenger service to all cities" Forcing me to start with passengers (which is harder than cargo) while giving me room to play with cargo later in the challenge, trying to weave it with a bunch of passenger lines already in place. I would have gone with USA models but I used USA in my Pinstar Plays

I know this is a very old video series, but just a tip, which I'm sure you most likely have already resolved in future videos. Keep your volume equivalent throughout. As it is in these videos, your introduction clip has a loud sound in it compared to the video volume and when you did the record scratch sound after finding out the towns goods, it sounded like it blew my damned speaker out. If I turn the volume down, your voice is too low, if I don't your off the wall loud sounds are outrageous. Anyway, just figured I would mention it as it is something that is annoying when watching people's vids and have to constantly adjust volume, especially if you are watching from across the room and have to get up and walk over to the computer to adjust. Not bad criticism, just some constructive criticism. ;-) Anyway, other than that, great videos and tutorials! OH, another tip. When you have a playlist with an ordered number of videos, put them in an order so they play consecutively. This playlist jumps from 4 to 10 to 9,8,7,6,5 to 11, 12, 13. Can't really watch it without clicking the specific video in the list I want to watch next. Again, horrible if you are trying to watch a playlist from across the room.

How about instead of no freight, do no simple freight. Only multistep ones, goods, machines, and maybe fuel. I think going no freight at all will make a less interesting series since you are cutting out half the game.
