I'm bawling! this reminds me of my own conversion. I was pretty much like Fr Calloway in his youth. But one day, I saw a pic of Saint Augustine, read a 100-word bio of him, and told myself "I want to be like him" A week later, I saw a church and decided to enter. it was from the order of Saint Augustine, the parish name is Our Lady of Grace. it was at night and there was a mass, so I entered. then I saw a sign that read "reconciliation" and people queuing. I joined the queue without thinking it too much, almost like in autopilot mode. It was the line for confession. It was almost 15 years since my last confession. the priest took good care of me. and here I am, loving God and Mary with all my heart, trying to be a good catholic.

Fr. Calloway spoke at my school when I was in 7th grade (I am from Steubenville and attended the Catholic school there), and when struggling with my faith throughout my life, I continually thought back to his story and his beautiful conversion. Thank you, Fr. Calloway, for sharing your testimony with little 12-year-old me. You truly have helped my journey with Christ. God bless you.

I'm about ready to join the catholic church. When I realized that's what I'm going to do I had a huge sadness in my heart that flooded my body realizing I did not raise my children in the church and how this might create some separation between us. I want my children to know this peace. I have 3 adult children and one still at home. He will be willing to go. He's open to it. Anyway, In that moment of sadness I can only describe a feeling that next came that overcame me with peace, it was that of a mother's heart and love that told me in my soul that my children will see my peace and eventually come through to knowing that God is real and peace can be found at the catholic church through watching me. That I'll have to say nothing to them. I knew at that time that that was Mary. I've never read a book about her or quite understand who she is yet. But I do KNOW that was her.❤

Fr. Don talked about Filipinos getting his hand and putting on their forehead. This is called "mano". It is done as a sign of respect and greeting to priests, your parents, grandparents and other elders (at home and in the community) and at the same time a gesture requesting for the priest's or elder's blessing. Usually done after mass, generally upon seeing them, before leaving the house and upon arriving home. Priests or elders usually respond with "God bless you" or "May God watch over you" and/or a hand gesture of the cross over the head after doing the "mano". This gesture symbolizes the Filipinos' high value and respect for family especially for their elders.

When we do that, we say along it the words “ Mano po” .. It is a way of asking blessings from elders and Priests. At the same time, it’s our way of showing respect to them.
@angelaconcessacheung2457
@angelaconcessacheung2457 2 жыл бұрын
@YAJUN YUAN the word ‘mano’ is Spanish for ‘hand’ (the philippines was colonized by spain for 300 years), while ‘po’ is a Filipino word used at the end of sentences as a sign of respect (to elder relatives, teachers, priests, any person you respect at a higher level basically) So ‘mano po’ would literally translate to ‘hand, please’ or in this case, asking a priest for his hand (which, as Fr. Calloway mentioned, is considered holy) / a blessing

Until the Novus Ordo, I had no idea what was happening during the Mass. I love the “new” Mass and our priests are great tying the readings of the day with the gospel. This form does exactly what was intended by the Vatican II. I agree Pope Francis’ words and actions are sometimes distressing, but Jesus is still watching over His Church. Love today’s show.

I agree as a mother with 4 children the Latin mass was so hard to follow. I spent most of the time hushing my children to avoid the stares and I could barely keep up with the abrupt sitting, standing and kneeling. I had high hopes for the Latin mass but it has its disadvantages.

@dand8159
@dand8159 2 жыл бұрын
I mean… people didn’t have trouble understanding the mass for the first 1900 years of the Church… and think of the countless saints the traditional Mass produced. and the Novus Ordo isn’t simply the Mass of tradition but in the vernacular language. they created something new and largely man-made, neutered the prayers, and introduced a lot greater room for liturgical abuses. We shouldn’t try to bring the liturgy down to a lower level to conform to modern times. We ought to conform ourselves to the Church and its traditions, not the Church conform to us. We must change and be changed by the Church, not the Church be changed so we don’t have to. It would not be a difficult thing to educate yourself on the traditional Mass by reading through a missal. The intention (perhaps a good-hearted one) of the novus ordo has clearly backfired and our culture reflects it. There is a reason the youth are flocking back to the traditions of the Church while older people are stuck in the 1970s. I do hope you see the perspective of young people or traditionally minded people on this issue. For most of us, we never understood the new mass growing up and it didn’t edify us or create strong roots. It seemed like bad entertainment and no sense of mystery, the Divine, or a Christ-centerdness. And then not until discovering the long-standing traditions of the Church was the fullness of the truth and beauty of the liturgy brought into understanding by many of the younger generation

Oops. I agree with you in the main. But now, as a frequent Mass goer, I love the readings and the respect our priests demonstrate at the altar. I like what you replied. Thank you. I am elderly now. I grew up in Mexico. Churches were beautiful and awe-inspiring, but the immense size, the priest mumbling at the altar in Latin, did not provide inspiration. I’ve learned what I was ignorant about, and am in awe and grateful we have both Masses available now.

Wow! What a beautiful interview! I hope to order Fr. Calloway's book soon. I loved when you all talked about tradition and TLM. Our family loves it and hate that we have to live in a state of concern for it being taken away. It is very encouraging that new Seminarians and younger families are embracing tradition also. We converted in 2022 and were so blessed that we decided to be nosey and check out the Mass that said "Extraordinary Form" in our bulletin. With so many issues in the church, I can never understand why limiting TLM is one of the focuses of The Pope. Fr. Calloway has an amazing testimony and I am so glad you had him on your program.

As I was going through the Consecration, I too questioned "why another Consecration?" During the actual Consecration, we prayed a rosary. I was invited to pray the 5th decade...finding Jesus is the temple. As I prayed, I was pondering the question. The thought came: "Why do we pray 'Fathe, son, Holy Spirit?' Praying to anyone of them prays to all; because they are one. I came to realize that as I pray to Mary and ask for intercession, I am also praying to Joseph because they are one. The answer came, we pray to Father, Son, Holy Spirit, to proclaim the mystery of the Trinity. We pray to Mary & Joseph to proclaim the mystery of the Sacrament of Matrimony.

Fr. Calloway's conversion is such an inspiring story. I love conversion stories. Ever since I've stopped being a lukewarm cradle Catholic, just last year, I now know how awesome Catholicism is! Falling in love with Jesus seems like a slow burn for me. Haha. I finally understand what it feels like, just last week! As for trads, I almost fell into that whole thing. Being a renewed Catholic and finally on the way to being devout since last year, I was leaning to the trad way after getting over spiritual pride and discovering scrupulosity (and getting rid of it). Back in March I asked Jesus about that in the Adoration Chapel. After conversing/praying for quite some time I suddenly remembered to ask if I should go find a TLM or what's the deal? Surprisingly I got an answer!!! 😱 The gist of what He "told" me was whether you go to TLM or Novus Ordo if you don't change for the better (e.g. be like Him and follow the commandments) then there's no point going to a TLM. That really got me to my senses. And then I just experienced the best culmination after a series of Novus Ordo masses from Maundy Thu to Divine Mercy Sunday. (First time I ever did it and what an experience!) Glory to God in the highest! Jesus really is true to His word! I got a whole lot of grace that unexpectedly I was initially so unaware of. He temporarily changed me for the better! Wow, thank you Jesus for your grace and mercy! 🙏 I only realized it the day after because the night of Divine Mercy Sunday I COULD NOT get angry like I used to in a certain situation that'd usually get me riled up. Like, what was wrong with me? Hahaha. Jesus is Lord! Viva Cristo Rey!

Wonderful interview. His love for St Joseph and Our Lady is simply outstanding. I like Fr's straightforwardness and sense of humour. I ran into his conversion story quite a while and it still amazes me. There are no lost cases in God's eyes. If only there were more priest like him - devoted to God and telling the truth. God bless you, Matt, and God bless Fr Calloway. 🙏🕊️✝️

I've started attending TLM recently in addition to my Syriac parish, and you are so right, Fr Calloway -- it draws the young people who are on fire for God, many of them recently baptized or on the way into the Church. TLM a magnet for conversions, too, because of the linguistic, artistic, and musical beauty, reverence though acts of kneeling and worship, and interiority fostered by the silence. Very different from my participatory Syriac parish, which I love, but I don't see any young people in their teens or twenties attending there, sadly. We need revival there!

53:02 The Filipino gesture Fr. Calloway was talking about is actually a gesture of greeting done to older people or people we respect or revere like priests and nuns. We say "mano po," while taking the back older person's hand and put it up on our forehead to show respect.

Thanks, Matt. I so enjoy these long format interviews. It gives a much better sense of who the person is, as opposed to what you hear in a sound bite. Thank you Fr. Calloway for the hysterically funny way you recount your conversion experience. I had to stop to get tissues for the laughter tears when you told about receiving the picture of the priest's "grandfather". May God richly bless you both.

My thought about hearing that he got a picture of the priest"s grandfather was: that was a new nugget I heard about that part of his story and perhaps he got that from the priest because he knew his own grandfather was a good intercessor. But then the white beanie comment explained it! He has such a talent for telling his story and God's story that really draws you in. God, please protect this holy priest.

Great things in the Church right now: in secular/protestant Scandinavia pious protestants are joining the Holy Catholic Church ❤ Pray for Finland, there is only one diocese and no bishop. Only ~16'000 catholics but every day growing. Great priest and a dozen young men in seminary! Sweden, Norway, Denmark same, the Church is growing!

Fr Calloway, you are my son's age. I wish my son's story had ended so well as yours instead he did not get saved from drugs and alcohol. He made a valiant effort. AA for years and off opiods for six years, then boom, deadly relapse. I prayed for him for nearly 30 years. I prayed for him the day he took his own life, desperately, he lived in a town far from me. I knew something was desperately wrong, I begged God to protect him all day. Called him all day no answer. Called all the friends I knew, no answer. Finally I got hold of a friend of his and I said go to his house now, he went and he was all ready dead. Now, how can I trust the Lord, or all the saints I prayed to for him? Why is one person saved and another lost in spite of our prayers? How can I completely trust God again, like I used to? If you can answer this I would be amazed. And I just read Chris's book and I am still lost. Right now, I feel like God does not want me to be a Catholic anymore because when I was a simple born again, I had more faith. This is far too complicated, I have cried a bazillion tears since I became a Catholic, and now the ultimate sorrow. A bazillion more. I think God wants me to just pray to him not all these saints, I think He wants me to just pray to and thru Jesus.
