I first heard this back during my senior year of highschool during a Levi's jeans commercial. I don't know how to explain it but it really captured a sense of wonder snd excitement for me. It made me envision a future full of adventure you definitely don't see commercials like that anymore.

Exactly the same for me. I don't think Levi understands the impact of that commercial

Everyone’s saying it’s a good poem, but I think it’s should be a sad poem. Cos when we think how the pioneers in those days feel…😅

@@-Nobody-1 All of my people come from both sides of the Ozarks, that is, Missouri and Arkansas. You’re quite right that a lot of people pronounce Arkansas “Ar-kansas”, but that seems to be more of an affection than anything else. Same with Missouri and Missour-ah.

I had not remembered what a glorification this poem is of devastating the land and the original inhabitants. If Walt Whitman had been on the colonizing end of this history, would we be aware of his work?

Native Americans took land and warred with each other as well. Every country in the world was built on blood. No one will ever understand this though.

There has always been war and struggles for power and control of resources. What is not inevitable is that the victor follows with systematic destruction of the people and culture of the other side. Reconciliation is hard, messy but possible.

Knowing all night and all through the ride this would probably be their last day on Earth. THAT is sacrifice that we thankfully don't have to make today.
