Life is the open road, we all get to choose which road to travel, we all get to choose how we view our lives, we all get to make peace/enemies of our burdens, and the human species is lucky to be the median for which the universe can experience itself through our discoveries and fascination.

This made me think at first about how I felt when young. Then I felt the paths I had been on we're not always my choice, there were roads blocked, the nature of this world. I can't go just anywhere, for God's plans for me we're not always my will. Then I realized how all my experiences are still carried in me, some as memories, some in my flesh, some, like love or fear are deep in my soul. Then when he was at the end, I wished that in my last year here on this world, I could still have the strength to just get up and go..... Just keep walking, until my days were ended. That might be true freedom, and the best way to live out the rest of my life. Because even now, in my autumn years, there's no way to know what paths I still have to travel, or how long they will be.

This poem matches my current mood so well. 60. Present troubles but I don't take them too heavily. I have responsibilities but none so important they can't be dropped. Maybe soon I will take off. My natural tendency is to drift. Cycle from my home near the Laos border in China up to Mongolia. Then winter in the holy mountain of Wu Tai Shan. I want little. Just to be away from bickering and posturing. The open road. Days can be tough. But the freedom of no plan no destination is a siren call.

Just found out a few years ago when I went to look into my ancestry, I traveled up to Long Island. born in Amityville, I went a few miles north to Whitman's birthplace. Why? So many times at the dinner table growing up, my parents had claimed we were related to him. So, with an handwritten family tree written by my grandfather, I presented to the curators the brown-edged single piece of paper. Within a few minutes, the gentleman came out and claimed I was related. The hair stood straight up on the back of my neck, and all the while trying to collect my thoughts, a group had walked in. The woman there apologized to me stating she had forgotten about this group coming and would I be okay with her stating I was Walt Whitman's relative. Still in a fog, I said of course. Without hestation after hearing the news they all gathered around me wanting pics and such. So, within a matter of minutes, I had gone from sheepishly asking about my "tree", to that of being "famous". Not really what I was looking for, but none the less, a memory I shall keep for ever.

The truth about Whitman, as I see it, was that he’d experienced cosmic consciousness, and everything he wrote was coming from this. To those who haven’t experienced this (mostly everyone), he will seem outlandish, even just plain crazy. He’s not alone though, Jesus, Buddha, Shakespeare, Goethe, Dante, Emerson, Dickinson et al all had these intimations of immortality. However, even without this angle, Whitman can just be read as humanistic wisdom for the ages. Those who claim something ‘off’, or worse, about him are, in my experience, usually rigid, linear thinkers who have sold their soul to this so-called holy book or that so-called holy book. There is more wisdom in 🍁 Leaves of Grass than all those dusty tomes put together.
