You have high Carbon Cr Mo V drill string pipe there cobber, then you have a 6010 hydrogen rich filler rod. Now you have the classic case of H2 delayed cracking, to a tee. This fault is nothing to do with magnetism it is everything to do with a high carbon equivalent and hydrogen. Preheat 95 Deg C and use a properly preconditioned E7018, clean the INSIDE of the pipe too. Wait two days for it to crack. If it doesn't you are good to go for loading it with beefies.

Didn't really understand all that he was talking about but, I would say you are spot on talking about the pipe being magnetized and causing the crack. I wonder if welding on the AC side would make a difference if you switched to 6011 instead of 6010?

@zombieresponder7 ай бұрын
I'm a machinist with heat treat experience that also welds. I would say that particular pipe is probably high carbon and other alloying elements. Your weld heated the steel enough to harden it, and then when it cooled and contracted the stress was enough to start a crack in the heat affected zone. Grind a v in the crack, heat it with a torch, weld it, then heat again with the torch. Check the hot zone with a magnet. Once it's no longer magnetic, critical temp has been achieved and it should be slow cooled to prevent it from hardening again. Personally, I'd probably wrap it with a welding blanket to keep it from cooling too quickly. If the ambient temperature is above 80F or so, and there's no wind, you can probably get by without that.

I believe its a combination a few of the conditions mentioned in prior coments. Also how long is the fence, too much cooling/ contraction would add another condition to failure. There is a coment in here about high carbon content from comination of the pipe alloy an electrode type. High carbon to me in simple terms means brittle material. But the distance between the crack and weld points to brittleness in my opinoin. Weld on yall. My the weld hold you
@Hjfvvdst7 ай бұрын
Stress Crack. Right at the edge of the heat effected zone. It appears like the horizontal pipe was much cooler than the vertical pipe. The horizontal pipe sucked the heat away too fast, and that is why it cracked. The way I have seen this done that I think is better is weld a stub on the vertical pipe slip the horizontal pipe on it leaving about 2 inches of slip. When the heat is up or down it allows the horizontal growth to not effect the vertical posts.

Magnetism has nothing to do with this. It only causes arc blow during welding. You have gotten hold of some very highly alloyed pipe and the heat of welding plus hydrogen in the rod has made the heat affected zone hard and brittle. You are gonna have to pre and post-heat and use a low hydrogen rod, properly conditioned in a rod oven. I have successfully welded a leaf spring on a farm trailer by pre and post heating and using that MG600 rod. It's deathly expensive but it can get you out of a jam.
