Glad that you watched this--I bet you remembered the steps for all five of these ladies' tracks. Must have been exciting to be in that original "Pippin" cast, which I saw twice.

@@auroraspiderwoman5886 Yes, I remember it like it was yesterday/ and I was on a lot -that’s why they asked me to replace Ann Reinking when she gave her notice. Unfortunately they didn’t give me credit for the cast album, a SAD oversight, but I loved singing Stephen Schwartz’s fantastic score! Hopefully for the 50th anniversary he can repair that omission of my name! All 5 women had different vocal tracks as well! At age 21, it was my first Broadway audition after being a professional New York City ballerina, and it was very challenging! xo! CC

This is from the Tonight Show, November 23, 1972 during one of Johnny's two road trips back to New York after he moved the show permanently to LA. Had Johnny continued to do road trips back to New York in the 70s he might well have spotlighted more Broadway shows the way Ed Sullivan had done.

It’s a rather long sequence for the Tonight Show, at least by today’s standards. But then, at that time the Tonight Show was an full hour and a half long. It was later shortened to an hour. We are lucky to have this.

The greatest musical ever written! I first saw it on laser disk (the version with William Katt as Pippin) at my best friend’s house in middle school, and it completely changed my life and set me on my course of being a professional musician. But this is my first time seeing John Rubenstein as Pippin (though I had the original cast soundtrack with John’s fantastic singing)- what a treat! Thank you so much for posting this! 🙏

I love this song and dance routine with Ben Vereen and John Rubinstein. No later cast was ever better than this original cast. Both are extremely appealing in this number. On the Right Track is a wonderful, fun and inspirational tune. We get to see some of Fosse's original choreography, as well. I can see why Ben Vereen won a Tony award for this role in 1973 Rubinstein on the other hand is just downright youthfully sweet and sexy.

Ah-maz-ing. I listened to the original cast album over and over again when I was a kid. Never thought I’d see the original cast perform part of it as I didn’t think any of it was ever taped. The 1981 Toronto performance seemed the closest I’d ever get. It’s fascinating to see them perform and struggle through this television format, including with wired microphones, that doesn’t quite fit and feels awkward. The choices they made to tone down the eroticism of With You for TV, which didn’t quite work. And finally Ben Vereen. My God. Such a stunning performer, even in the most awkward of circumstances he is completely committed to his performance. Truly amazing. Thank you so much for finding and posting this!!!

@Paul Canaday-Elliott: You have it exactly right in your comment. This is just a TV appearance, not the actual show, but I suspect it's the only footage of John Rubinstein as Pippin, and in a semblance of the original staging. In addition to the taped Toronto version, you can see the original cast in "Magic to Do" on the 1973 Tony Awards, even if it's not markedly different from the Toronto opening number.

My sister and I saw this production when I was 14 and she was 11. We went backstage afterwards to get autographs. I’m sorry you had that experience with Mr. Vereen. I think it might have been a bad day for him, since, when I stage-doored after a performance in November, 1975 (I was 15) he was very gracious, signing autographs and speaking with the fans. He told us that when the week was up, he was heading out to California for a TV project, without naming it. In retrospect, that had to be “Roots”!

@ninth_revolution8272 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind that this was for a television performance- thus the mic setup was different. This show was actually a pioneer for strategically placed mics- Abe Jacob never got the credit he deserved for his use of stage mics and how the show was staged in such a way to keep actors in range of the mics. The only number to use a wired handheld microphone was No Time At All, which was not a result of technological limitations, but rather to fit with the style of the number.

I've noticed that between the original production & the 1982 production, the lyrics for the first two verses of "With You" changed drastically. The new lyrics were a horrible mistake.

The lyrics for War is a Science and With You were done on Broadway as they were in the ‘81 Toronto production. The lyrics as they were originally written (evergreen pine and autumn blue) were used for the cast album, licensed version and in this television performance.
