This video made the pirate situation clear. I find myself in favour of their actions as long as they hold their ground and not over-extend their rights. I see people struggling to survive and these people have every right to protect their food.

The only reason most people don't like the "pirates" in the west is they only hear what is reported in the main press. Very few people realise what really happens but those that do are in full support of local Somalis.

I justified nothing-I said that from a statist perspective, the piracy makes sense. Of course the statists are wrong. All taxes are extortion. I believe you mean customs duties not tariff. Of course both these measures rely on violence. The threat of a fine is the threat of jail is the threat of murder. All threats are threats of murder. The difference is it takes a while for the gun to come out. The Somalis have had toxic/nuclear waste dumped on them and their stocks devastated.

(cont'd) The situation deteriorated when the west and Ethiopia(who has a history of war with Somalia) intervened in business that was not theirs. There was no mujihadeen like there is now, the ICU insignificant back then. Western backed forces merely bolster their ranks and support, domestic and foreign. And again the US supports the Saudis. Without our help the insurgency there would escalate. Watch the videos. Read all the comments, YT swallows some in your inbox. Question your views.

@eskachig The somali pirates were even worse victims of the commercial fishers. After the civil war, the government collapsed and now one actually controlled somali waters, anyone could fish however much they wanted, no regulation and no fishing quota. The somali fisherman suffered and thus turned to piracy. Also, countries such as switzerland and italy took advantage of the lawlessness and began dumping TOXIC WASTE, in somali water and on somali land killing and damaging both people and fish.

To have any hope of changing anything we've got to change ourselves first. Less reliance on the system. Say "no thanks" when they're selling you the next new thing. It means we've got to stop being a consumer. You will realise very quickly that that's nearly impossible. None of us can simply disconnect from the system because in reality we are the system. We are a mirror of what's going on in the whole world and a mirror of what they've bought us up to see and do.

Pirates aren't doing this to protect resources, they are doing it for money - and the world's navies ought to make an example of them. On the other hand, pilfering of Somalia's fishing waters by various international commercial operators was also inexcusable and forced many into extreme poverty and crime (piracy in this case). If Somalia ever regains some sort of a government they should pursue legal action.

The answer is as long as theres still 1 of us left willing to buy their products. You must understand how the world works. I want a utopian world where everythings fair, but, not everything can be fair, especially when we rely on the system so much. Start growing some of your own food. Even if you can only replace 1% of what you consume with your own produce that's 1 step forward in the right direction. If we all can do that year after year then their grip on us is loosened.

Pirates remain failed pirates. Successful pirates become Navies. Most of the hijacked ships have happened within the 12 mile coastal range that most countries claim. The hijackings are merely the equivalent of taxes that any state takes when trade goes through it's turf. From a statist perspective what the pirates are doing is quite normal. The fishermen could merely hire the pirates as guards to protect their waters and stocks. Not to mention: who are keeping merchant vessels from arming?

If you'd watched the videos you'd know that Somalia has improved significantly since the fall of the totalitarian dictatorship in 1991, when aid from govts stopped coming. Private charities still send aid. Somalia has gas deposits-but that was my personal speculation. Somaliland is one of the actually stable regions. The dumping of waste is a reason why the pirates formed. You only harm yourself if you don't know the facts. Watch the videos.

(cont'd) The Somalis also have been subject to the ambitions(slaughter) of the UN, US, and Ethiopia, in their attempt to set up an in-exile made(meaning propped up by foreigners) "transitional" govt. This galvanized the Islamic Courts Union, which was fairly weak before, but the Somalis saw the trans govt for what it was. The ICU also receives weapons/funds from Saudi Arabia(whose despotic monarchy has our backing/weapons sales), Syria, and others.

i don't think the coastguard of Kenya can't arrest and fine those trawlers and their captains perhaps they pay the Kenyan goverment for the right to fish ther so they let them... The pirates by the way also attack comercial ships and even Tankers or tourist yatchs since their main target isn't to help local fisherman but to get ransom money from abducted people:(

In Somalia; there are two pirates, first being Huge factory Ships from Europe (estimated 300 ships) & Asian (200 ships) whom are using latest technology to fish that vacuuming even small ones and even banned tools. Second pirates are former fishes that fed up those ships started to go farther their land. Now, Somali pirates harmed trade there but saved more fishes and Environment against illegal fishing and damping nuclear wasted. All & all they are pro Environment. kkk

No, govts are private and do whatever is in their interest. If you had watched the videos you'd know that Sharia law is not that common in Somalia, the Xeer, or common law, or natural law, is. You'd know that Somalia has been better off w/o a state economically, and in terms of fighting(barring urban areas). THe "transitional" govt cannot take back "what's theirs" bc it isn't "theirs." Somalia has been w/o a govt since '91. Govts can only "own" property like you and I can, or a firm. One...
