'Pirates of the Caribbean' surfer Tamayo Perry killed by shark in Hawaii

Officials say professional surfer and lifeguard Tamayo Perry was killed in a shark attack off the coast of Oahu. ABC News' Andrew Dymburt reports.

A wave of shock and sadness has swept over Hawaii and the surf world at large, as news that Tamayo Perry, Pipeline specialist, was killed by a shark on June 23rd. Perry was surfing Goat Island off Oahu's east side at the time of the attack; he was 49 years old....what the hell are you doing taking a chance at 49 years old with sharks in the water? RIP.

In Hawaii, Tamayo was more known for being a lifeguard/waterman. Reporters seem to gloss over that fact. Acting didn't pay the bills. Saving lives & spreading knowledge was more important. Imua, Tamayo...E'o!

They actually happen really often across the U.S. and world. Just not enough vs the amount of people in the water. You can look at shark attack history in Hawaii and the worst months are always tiger shark breeding time. The only deaths have been on Maui, until now

Most shark attacks on humans are due to the shark biting out of curiosity to see if it's something they want to eat. They take a bite on a surfer or diver to see if they like the taste, and most sharks don't actually like the taste of humans that much. If the shark had actually eaten this guy they wouldn't have found his body would they?

Your not a surfer are you? You haven’t been to the beach in your life have you? Surfing is an addiction and once you start, you can’t stop. 3 days ago I had a blacktip shark run up on me. Does that mean I will give up what I love? HELL NO. I don’t know, let’s say you play baseball. If you got an injury to the head from a baseball, but the doctor said you would be able to continue, would you? Of course you would. Because it’s what you love.
