The new Pirelli F1 tyres are weird this year, really weird.
Often, the hard tyre has been the fastest. Two and three stops have been faster than the 1 stop that Pirelli recommends, and Mercedes and Aston Martin have been using all of their tyres before the race.
But yet all that madness, the racing has been excellent. And that is partly down to the tyres being great for pushing hard.
So what’s going on here? We’re going to go over everything we know about these new F1 tyres for 2022.

Years of being told "less reliable tyres = more interesting strategy = more interesting racing" Yet now we have better tyres, and the racing has been more interesting

it's less about tyre "reliability" and more about tyre deg, the tyres this year aren't more reliable, they're more predictable deg wise but they still deg faster than it naturally would

Unpredictable tyres are no way fun for racing, as the drivers will focus on the tyres more than racing himself as have happened on the past few years, a default tyre structure is much better

I think with the Q2 tire rule gone now they should go back to having all 5 compounds available every weekend I think that could lead to even better racing than the improvements we’ve seen this year because the different strategies that would be available to the drivers. Could lead to some very interesting strategies that would lead to more entertainment

Only issue with that would be a *lot* of tires forced to be taken to each track every weekend We've never had all 5-7 ranges available in a given week as well only been 3 tires types a weekend since about 2017 Bring back the Pirelli rainbow though lol

To make 5 compounds available pirelli would need to take so many tyres to each race it wouldnt be feasible. I would go the other way and say reduce it to 2 sets. Most only use 2 compounds during a race anyway.

@@Very_Grumpy_Cat Pirelli also supplied some F1 teams with tyres in the 50s and they had the best ones back then, grippier and more durable than of other suppliers of the time.

you should mention that the Q2 tire rule has been deleted so everyone can choose whatever they like for the race start!

Yeah this was really bad rule as it made the cap in races between top team and midfield bigger than it needed to be.

It has been interesting to see how the new tires have changed things. It really stood out to me that the hard tires are still good for racing when Leclerc was still able to fight multiple laps with cars on fresh softs at Silverstone after the safety car. Even though he did end up getting passed, previous years I feel like he wouldn't have stood a chance at all and probably fallen even further back than he did.

'Hard tires' doesn't even tell the full story because the hard tire could either be C1, C2 or C3. So the hard tire at one race could be the soft tire at the next

@@PlaySA but it will always be the hardest Tyre that weekend. That's the point. To simplify things for the casual fan. All they need to know is soft, medium, hard and not supersoft, hypersoft, and ultrasoft

This 100x. Smart, quality, objective, and insightful takes on the sport. As an American forced to watch through Sky's F1TV subscription I'm getting sick of hearing "Team from Enstone" and "Milton Keynes outfit" just to remind the Brits why they should care. >Except Sam Collins, love that guy.

@@suitsandstrings55 There are parts of Sky Sports I really enjoy. Kroft is really good at 'play by play'. And I enjoy hearing from the former race car drivers. Naomi Schiff gives a much needed new insight. But, I could really do without the interviews with 'Mr Spice Girl' (Christian Horner) All he does is whine about Mercedes. I just wish they could give us more tech info. (Like Driver61) And this year especially the racing has been wonderful. I attended the Canadian Grand Prix and loved it!

I kinda miss the hilarious names tires used to have. Or actually just the creativity they had to have to come up with even softer names for tires. The pink hypersofts will forever be in my heart

"Hard Tyres are best" - and then came Hungary. I love it, makes the pre-race strategy and in race adjustments all the more important. Never being able to settle on a single "best" compound might keep the team up at night but it makes for incredible viewing of race strategy.

I am honestly stunned that this late into the season there _still_ hasn't been a spectacular blowout. I thought this season we were going to see at least one race like Silverstone 2013.

Got a problem with this analysis, and that is that, as you know, Pirelli has *5* compounds for slicks, not just hard / medium / soft. Your graphic at 3:14 mentions that the 'hard' compound for Austria was the C3, which was supposedly the 'soft' compound at Silverstone (see graphic at 7:53 ) The discussion would have been different had they chosen the C1-C2-C3 range for Austria. However, that being said, Pirelli do appear to have the compounds in control, as well as their *selection* of the compounds on a race-by-race basis in 2022.

I disagree. His analysis still track on a race by race basis. The fact that the hard tire at one circuit was the soft or medium at another is irrelevant. When it was the available hard, it was the preferred tire, when there was a harder one available as the option, that one was preferred. It's in line with everything he's said.

The huge variety of strategies is awesome. Even if they aren't very competitive, the fact that AM is employing such a radical strategy is really cool.

Yes because the hard tyres actually have a life unlike the rest that start to degrade after a couple of laps,,also as the hard tyre wares down it probably helps the compound actually behave better and not loose time as rapidly as they have before

Watching people come out of the pits with cold hard tyres and sliding all over the place was crazy in the Bahrain GP. But then they broke in the tyres and they came to life.

I hope next year Pirelli uses different colors for all the 5 compounds, instead of only using 3 color, because it is quite confusing

It is confusing because you know there are more compounds. The casual viewer does not know this so it is a bit of a white lie to not confuse the new fan. So I hope they keep it the same so the confusion is with the informed fans and not the casual new fan

@@jorrittimmers8066 That's totally true, but I think that casual viewers probably do not even understand the difference between tyre compounds in general. They usually rely on the commemtator. As a hard core fan, I loved the Pirelli Rainbow and it was quite easier to get a feel of what a C1-C5 is capable of. Now it's hidden behind different colours depending on the track. Only caveat: If you don't know what range of tyres is available, you might not know that the "Supersofts" were actually the hard compound compared with Ultra and Hypersoft. Both systems have their pro and con, but I think overall the previous system was a bit better and more consistent for the audience that is actually interested in tyre compounds.

I completely agree. It's really hard to remember which range of three tires get chosen for each race. You can still call them hard medium and soft but just have different colors for C1-C5. OR you could do it Superhard, Hard, Medium, Soft, and Supersoft and just call it what it is.

​@@Rocky712_ IMO the current system is much better. Tyre compounds will have different behaviours depending on track type, surface, temperature, etc, so as a spectator you can't really compare them accross different circuits, unless you want to go down to engineer levels of data analysis. And, if you really want to go there, you can just google the compounds selected for a given weekend. The current system makes it far easier to understand strategies during the races, since you immediately know where a compound sits in the range of available tyres. Otherwise you'd have to memorize what compounds are available, since a "medium" or "C3" tyre could be either the softest or hardest option of a given circuit.

Its not their are that cool in the garage. But as the car goes down the pit lane the wheels lose a lot of temperature as they have no force going through them. In the previous seasons teams could prepare for this

I thought 100°C was within the optimal temperature range but i could be wrong.

@@j_gibbon Yes pretty sure all of them last year were 100 degrees as optimal temp ranges. A lot bigger ranges this year, so hards are comfortable at 100, but can operate up to 145 I think. (and mediums to 125-135 ish)

@@shogt3248 this is not true. 95 is the optimal operating temp. You are in overheat territory at 110 and cold territory below 80

Pirelli have always had the ability to make tyres more durable but F1 mandated that they be quick wearing. It never made sense to me, it made the races tame as drivers didn't want to push too hard during the race with many overtakes happening as a result of pit strategy. I hope this years trend continues and we scrap the old days.

Maybe the tyres will make a good race at france as in Austria was struggling whiles Mercedes have no problem with tyres. Ferrari does not like heat. Will it be a 3 team race, HOPE SOO.

@@oz2362 They probably won't. They are the most improved team in terms of pace. Alpine on the other hand is not quicker than the Mercedes. Not once has the alpine been close to Mercedes closest that has is the mclaren.

@@oz2362 mercs run on lower power to prevent the same, hence they are the most reliable team, least components used and them too cus of crashes. Imagine if this is their pace at only 60-70%

I wish pirelli were allowed to actually allowed to develop the tires the same way michelin does endurance tires, often times the compounds are for conditions rather then performance. Harder compounds work in rougher conditions

You are also missing the facts that pirelli changes the tyre compound from race to race example.. in austria the c3 tyre was the called the hards and at Silverstone the c3 tyre was called the softs

@@kevinhanandi technically they didn't ditched the hyper or super soft they are renamed for the race ... pirelli just chooses 3 compound and name them softs medium and hards to avoid the confusion but the hyper soft would be the c5 super c4 softs c3 mediums c2 and hards c1

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that the drivers seemed to struggle with getting the hards up to temperature after a pit stop this year? I seem to remember many struggling on the out lap after a new set of tires (hards especially). Or have the teams fixed this issue? Otherwise great video again guys

I was thinking this as well. It was especially apparent on the Mercedes, which they do address in the video, but I was sure other teams were finding it took a couple of laps to switch them on. I do believe this is more to do with the tyre blankets being at lower temperatures

If they scrubbed them in, no they get to the racing window quickly. If they were new and still coated in the shiny releasing compound, yes there is a period of time which is not about warming so much as scrubbing off the protective layer.

Tire warmers can only heat tires to 70 degrees now, much cooler than in previous rulesets.

They should go back to tyre compounds with less deg so drivers can go flat out all race long. Since engines are more fuel efficient now there's no need for refueling.

One of the reason Merc was dominating are the bespoke tyres Pirelli made for them. They didnt work as good on other cars. Same as Ferrari back in the Schumi days. I cant think of how many times Pirelli changed the tyre by Mercedes request. Harder rears, thinner thread and so on.

The tires seem alright. The only issue is currently that the medium tire isn't fast enough. Ideally, there should be a .7 to 1.0 second difference in lap time between each compound. What makes tire strategy interesting and the races more action packed is creating differences in relative speeds, and having that difference change throughout a stint and the whole race. For this to work, there tire performance gaps need to be sufficiently large, and the allocation must not allow the teams to run their preferred tire at all times during a weekend.

I wonder if on both fronts the new lower sidewalls of the tyres are a big factor in the reason? Lower side wall means stiffer tyre, not as much lateral movement, not as much compression and expansion under braking and acceleration. Pirelli adjust the tyre compound for this year's ground effect cars maybe still considering the heat all the tyre movement of the past generates. Also Mercedes not fully considering how much less the tyre movement and heat energy would be, therefore designing their car thinking they'd heat up the same as previous regulation, but caught out. Silver lining being they can last longer as stated in the video.

One thing I find misleading / confusing about tire discussions is it insinuates there are only 3 compounds to choose from, when in fact there are 5. Taking the C3 - one week it can be the "hard" compound / the next week it can be the full "soft" - depending on the range they select. Or am I misunderstanding this?

There's only ever been 3 compounds to choose from a weekend since about 2017 before that it was 2 tire compounds And the reason for the confusion in how the hard tires one week can become the soft tires is the FIA decided to 'simplify' the tires colouring system for 2019 Before 2019 you had different colours for the: hypersoft ultrasoft supersoft soft medium hard superhard tires After 2019 the superhard and I think the hard got dropped and we had the C1 to C5 system when C1 was the hardest tire and C5 the softest and the current colour system of white for hardest tires used yellow for the medium tires used and red for the softest tires used. Basically by FIA trying to be make it more simple they made it more confusing imo lol

No you have it right. IMO they should be called the Superhard, Hard, Medium, Soft, and Supersoft. This year the mid range is clearly the best, ie C2-C4 or Hard, Medium and Soft. The C5 Supersoft is useless, gets busted after three laps and the Superhard is way too firm and has no grip.

Good video BUT I’m really disappointed that you guys missed the opportunity to discuss how there is actually 5 different compounds of tires meaning one weeks softs could be the next weeks hards…. Why not bring that up??

I've always wondered if multiple compound tyres would be possible. ie a soft compound on the very outside for starts and warm up, turning into a medium and then as the tyres wear even more have a much harder inner compound. This would allow drivers to push the whole time but would give a big advantage to newer tyres. Probably not possible due to production costs I'd imagine though.

Yeah the FIA loves pit stops and I can see their point. Pirelli already could make a tire that would last the full race easily.

Since they mention how little difference there is between mediums and hards lap times, I wonder if using hards and softs might actually be more beneficial?

I'd like for competitors to Pirelli to enter F1. Like Michelin, Good Year, Bridgestone or someone else. Two or tree tyre manufacturers competing in F1.

One problem is that you are looking on tyres as HARD/MEDIUM/SOFT but you should look and analyze compounds from C1-C5... And a problem is that C1 is not working for anyone, we had 3 racers where we had C1 but in all of those races everyone forbid them as they are not working at all.. Slightly difference is Silverstone but i think they didnt work there either and fastest strategy was 2stop C3/C2/C2 or C2/C3 (like Perez did)... On the other side C5 tyres are so soft that they last 3 laps and then they are so slow.. C2 and C3 are lasting so long and working for everyone and even if in Silverstone you can do 75% of the race on C2 and still be fast then there is something wrong..

I propose calling them Superhard, Hard, Medium, Soft, and Supersoft. Hard, Medium and Soft are the best tires this year, the C1 and the C5 seem pretty much useless.

@@PlaySA yes exactly.. C5 are good atleast for some good quali but C1 are so useless.. i think that C2 is superior to others.. Full length in australia (Albon) almost full length in Silverstone (Perez even told in radio that he can go till the end) .. they are fast and long lasting even on circuits where should be high tyre degradation ..

Two things: 1. There are FIVE compounds! Not explaining this makes the information in this video utterly incomplete… 2. We see a lot of drivers struggling to put heat in harder compounds, which contradicts what you are saying. This video was just a waste of time.

I would love to see Pirelli mix up the tyres like they did in Australia and not have them in order. IIRC they used the C2 as hard, the C3 as medium and the C5 as soft. Run a race with the C1 as hard, the C3 as medium and the C5 as soft. That will make the teams think.

Let's not forget that the tires used in 2021 were actually a few years old, design wise. It's good to see Pirelli make a nice step with the added development time for this year.

Last year the medium was almost too powerful. It was obvious if they were allowed to, the teams would have run only mediums during the races. This year it seems the mediums are significantly less reliable than the heads but much slower than the softs.

There is a fallacy in this video (and that logic) though: there is no medium tyre. There is no one set of mediums. Just as last year there are multiple compound of the C1 and onward which can be a "medium" option for a given race, and they all have pretty different properties.

Even if the balance between soft/medium/hard is a bit off, it's the same for everybody and we see better racing with more laps that you can really beat on those tyres. I know, the Formula 1 was always trying to create an element of surprise and tension with such regulations (and less durable compounds in the last years) but I personally think, it should be less about struggle and managing it and more about "active battle time" (due to cars that can be driven hard from start to finish).

I noticed this in the F1 game believe it or not. I was faster than the Ai with mediums vs their softs. Then when I went softs and they had mediums they were faster than me. Even the hards performed well. Interesting….

I'm curious and maybe you want to make a video out of it... What is your take as a professional racing driver on the "F1 Driving Standard Guidelines" released by the FIA in Imola this year? Especially considering overtakes on the inside of a corner namely Vettel/Schumacher in Miami a few months ago, Russell/Perez now in France and (what many also compare it to) Verstappen/Hamilton in the first lap of the final race in Abu Dhabi 2021. [I tried to provide a direct link to the FIA-document but the youtube comment section just butchers it. So you would need to google it yourself.]

The hard tires can be multiple different compounds, I find that to be an annoying oversimplification, I much prefer when they are all called what they are.

Because we have 5 (?) different compounds, each tire, whether soft, medium or hard can be 3 different compound depending on the weekend. So at the end of the day it's not that different from the old, more detailed "rainbow" tire markings.

You can always look up the compound "C" numbers in use for the weekend. It's to simplify it for the less technical fans.

Before saying bad things about last year's tyres, we should make it clear that they are actually 2019's tyre. The teams rejected Pirelli's 2020 and 2021 offerings as well... That's the reaseon they had to cut out part of the floor last year, to actually take away downforce so the old tyres wouldn't die...

Basically gonna be like driving in the rain for the first 2-3 laps after you change tyres😂. Which really limits the cars, which will produce better racing - hopefully. Might see more driver errors tho.

It will be really interesting from a driver skill point of view but I do think we'll lose something from a strategy point of view. I'm hoping to be proven wrong and I expect it'll create a whole new strategy but I've always enjoyed the undercut as a strategy (I guess that's cos of how long I've been watching the sport and back in the day pre DRS it was the only way to overtake)

These new cars have less downforce than the previous ones, which makes them wear out their tires faster. So, even though the tires have become harder, tire wear has increased it seems. Drivers are no longer required to start on their qualifying tires, which is the main reason the harder tire-compounds are favored in the race now. The soft tire is usually the weakest tire in the race, so until last year the top teams usually tried to qualify on the medium tire. The hard tire can be pushed much harder, so it indeed ends up being outright quicker than the soft tire. The tire deltas Pirelli shows before the start of every race are incredibly misleading.

That's all very well, except there is no "medium" tyre anymore, is there? Or Soft or hard. There are multiple compounds which represent harder or softer options that week, but saying "THE medium tyre is X" is just fallacious when there is no "THE medium tyre"!

I guess this refers to possible mislabeling in pirelli's permises!!!!! I noticed in some early race this year (with red bull as I remember) that the medium tires behaviour during the race was so different than those on the parctrice.. that wasn't the case with the rest of the teams.

The high degradation tires formula were as responsible for dirty air/sensitive downforce. The best racing I have ever seen has always been on tires you could push really hard during the entire stint.

Tires still need less of a cliff but pirelli hasn't been able to get this part of the formula right, ever. We have had situations like this since they were the sole tire provider. I hate the 3 tire choices (prefer 2) but whatever. Will never be able to change that.

I don't understand tyre warmers... why not just get rid of them and let it be down to the driver to bring them up to temperature? maybe im missing the point, it just seems like something that could be really interesting from a racing viewpoint is taken away by using these warmers.

I pesonally think that pirelli has supplied the worts tyres we have seen in years. I remember when dribers used to pump in fastest laps one after the other at the end of the race but now they only do it after the pit stop and then the performace goes away and you have no chance.

Pirelli isn't asked to make just a good tyres. Tgey could easily make good lasting tyres. Or fast tyres. No, they have a christmas bucket list: not so durable, not so fast, several degrees of degredation. Now take off the blankets. Now some team (starting by M) is complaining. Now other teams is running in lower pressure. All this just to try to compensate the fact that the cars have huge pace gaps between them. And now there is another complain: hard tyre isn't slow enough!

I think I remember hearing that tire warmers are going to be eliminated completely in future rulesets. So this is probably a step in that direction, to get teams to rely on them less and drivers used to coming out with colder tires.

In dirt oval racing, every racer literally grinds their tires with a sander to get the top layer of rubber off the tire for more grip. New tires and tires right after races all get this treatment in dirt racing. (And yes I know the tire is designed entirely differently. Just an interesting fact that's all)

It feels like the selection of C grades for each race has been a little off for the tracks. Not a huge surprise though, given the new size/shape and variation in downforce.

nah it's just Pirelli wrong choice at compound. there's several compound available that used until 2018: Hyper Ultra Supersoft, Medium, Hard, Super Hard. these 7 or 5 compounds C1 C2 ... C5 are later selected by Pirelli into three simplified categories of Soft-Hard Medium. That could be C1-C2-C3, or C3-C4-C5. The Hard tyres of previous race could be the soft for next race.
