From the 9mm Luger to the .44 Magnum ... and even the .45 Colt/.454 Casull, light, handy carbines chambered for pistol caliber cartridges can be highly effective fighting rifles. I will discuss the semi-auto versions as well as the lever action models for 2nd Amendment-impaired states.

I'm an old school type. Lots of single and double action revolvers in 357mag, 38Spl, and 45 Colt. And my long guns are either 357mag or 45 Colt. I cast and load my own ammo. Living in the woods of E. Texas, my range is often well under 100m. My primary concern is feral hogs, coyote, and Feral dogs that run my woods. Both long guns and handguns easily take down 200 lbs or larger hogs with ease. And I'm far from feeling helpless with my "antiquated" weapons against a criminal attack. 😏

I bought a modle 1894 Winchester Trapper Carbine with a 16" barrel, brand new back in 1987 chambered in 44 magnum. It can hold 10 rounds in the tubular magazine too. I could never bring myself to sell it. That little rifle with the right bullet and powder combination hits extremely hard and penetrates deep. A load that I always thought would be an excellent self defence option was a Remington 180 grain hollow point bullet moving at 1950 fps, and it wasn't a maximum load ! It does massive, massive damage to a coyote at 50 yards, looking like a bomb went off inside it. It shoulders quickly and I got very fast and accurate with it, to the point that I could hit a running rabbit within 30 yards. When I got bifocals, I had to stop shooting it because I couldn't see the open sights anymore. I may try to adapt a red dot sight to it sometime. I just love that little rifle. I've shot it so much that I wore the bluing off the lever, grip, and trigger. 😅. No its not for sale Dick ! PS: I think it was 28 grains of Win 296 behind that 180gr bullet.

I had one of those in .44 mag!!! I had the “wisdom” to sell it, and now I kick myself. Great gun in .44, but the .357 was actually heavier and my fat fingers could not push the .357 rounds in like I could the .44’s…and unfortunately I am on the same page as you as far as the iron sights go. Oh well.

I'm waiting for a "trigger" for my new Labradar, which is finicky so far, but I have a test load for the .44 using Hornady 180XTPs and more than your 28 gr load (I'm using H110, but it and 296 are the same powder - manufactured by WW). No pressure signs at all, but failed to register on the Labradar on the first try.

Hey, I got a 1894 Winchester with a 20" barrel in 30-30, it think it was made in 1982, and yes I always thought it would be an awesome self defence firearm. Can you do a short demonstration on how to shoot a lever action fast ? I have been able to shoot a lever action rifle fast and accurate for at least 30 years, but alot of folks probably have never been around one. Can you do a short demonstration for the people out there on how to shoulder, aim, and work the lever on one ? Might be beneficial, especially in this state.

A deputy I worked with was going through a divorce and custody battle, needed money real fast for lawyers. He asked me if I would buy his KelTec Sub2000 in .40 cal plus a few mags. Well I did for probably more than it was worth to help him out. I thought it would be a good plinking gun. Turns out it's a really good shooter. I've brought it out around friends and family, it's always a hit and everyone loves it. They're hitting coke cans at 50 yards and coffee cans at almost 100 yards having fun. Thing has never malfunctioned. My only complaint is the cross bolt safety is backwards. Only one I've seen that is left to right to fire.

I'm a lever action rifles fan and I have got many Winchesters and Marlins (and Brownings and Rossis). I can only confirm what you say in your vid: 357, 41 and 44 magnum calibers deliver so much power out of 16 to 24" barrels! And I can shoot the exact same cartridges out of my Colt Pythons, my Ruger Redhawk and my S&W 629. They make true nice combos. I also have a Marlin Camp 9 as I once had a S&W 5906 (magazines are compatible between those guns); and you're right: the gain in speed through the 16" barrel is very small - if any gain at all. What's more the Marlin seems to not appreciate bullets that are not FMJ RN. Thank you again and greetings from France.

A friend had a Marlin camp carbine. He was never able to get a full mag thru it without a malfunction. He put it away as an inherited collector he couldn't sell like I did my Ruger Deerstalker. My Marlin 44mag is one rifle I really regret selling; great hunting rifle to 100 yards. A less expensive carbine is the Rossi 92 but mine is accurate enough to hunt with & in 45colt. Ammo is harder to find in 45colt but a caliber well worth having if you can find it. I keep looking for one of the new Ruger/Marlin 44's & hear they're better than the originals but I'm not seeing them out yet.

I always thought 7.62x25 Tokarev would make a great lever gun cartridge. It's a great little cartridge and really wakes up in a carbine! And while lever guns are decent, if I couldn't get an automatic rifle, my next choice would be a 12 ga shotgun like a Browning Auto 5 (with a mag extension tube).

The concept of the same ammo for different platforms is excellent, for many reasons. I'm old and so is every handgun/carbine I own. If I ever find myself in a position where I have to defend my home, although I have several lever actions in different calibers, I will use my M-1 Carbine. Simply because with the minimum 15 round clip, I can expend a lot of rounds in a short time. (Compared to my lever guns.) Thanks for another interesting topic.

Yes! Finally someone with some actual real world knowledge and awesome advice about different firearms calibers. I've always knew that magnum chambered lever action rifles were awesome but for some reason alot of people think they're old fashioned and obsolete. I live in Massachusetts so yeah AR15s and AKs are definitely banned here. Unless you want a MA legal one with a fixed 10 rounds only magazine that you have to feed with stripper clips.😢 So I've been looking at lever action 357 magnum rifles and they're alot of fun but also powerful. Me personally the 38 special is the ammo I would use. The magnum loads are just too much.
@cgsimons1187
@cgsimons1187 2 ай бұрын
The primary benefit gained in a .357 Mag carbine or rifle is the boost in velocity when loaded with .357 Mag ammo. IMHO .357 Mag is manageable from a carbine. If you use .38 Special in the carbine it gains very little in velocity. It may also be a bit less smooth to cycle compared to the appropriate length .357 Mag cartridges. Though .38 Special can be pretty quiet coming out of the long barrel. Uberti makes an 1866 Yellowboy lever action specifically designed for .38 Special so it may be smoother if this is the caliber for you. However, their rifles are expensive!
@lockloadwithdickfairburn-cr1jb
@lockloadwithdickfairburn-cr1jb 2 ай бұрын
I would stick with the .357 loads, just test to make sure the bullets hold together at carbine velocities. My Browning B92 in .357 refuses to feed .38's smoothly, a little tinkering with the magazine latch might fix it. When I used it for cowboy action shooting I just bought a 500 round batch of Starline brass and loaded very light loads to use in the carbine and my pair of Ruger Vaquero revolvers.

Reloading with slow burning powder specially for longer barrels can really take a PCC to the next level. 10mm Auto has less case capacity than .45 Auto, a PCC using cut down .308 rifle brass aka .460 Rowland would be the ultimate. A high pressure rated .38 Super chambered carbine that can use cut .223 brass aka the Super Cooper 9mm, .357 Sig or 9x25 Dillon would be nice too for long range trajectory.

I'll be doing a Super Cooper 9mm video this summer. Dick Heinie and I built a LW Commander using the .223 brass and I wrote an article on it for Handloader magazine (early 80's). Heinie credits my published "major" loads in the .38 Super for kicking off the .38 craze in IPSC/USPSA competition. Not my idea of a good carbine load, however. The .357 Mag will give MUCH better performance from a carbine barrel. Or even the .350 Legend in an AR.

I thought that the Model 1927 Thompson semiautomatic submachine gun (with the original 10-inch barrel, converted from the Model 1921 Thompson submachine gun) was the first US semiautomatic carbine, and then there was the Reising Model 60 (with a legal-length 18-inch barrel). Both were marketed to police and factory guards to avoid machine gun paperwork. I did own a Universal 1003 carbine and both editions of the Marlin Camp Carbines. PCCs don’t make sense to me from a defensive perspective nowadays because you can get a small, light, AR platform in 300 BLK with a 9 inch barrel and still have room for a suppressor to save your ears inside in an emergency. Doesn’t mean I don’t have any PCCs though. I love them, especially the SP5….I mean, come on, Die Hard! However, in commie states the lever actions in .357 is the way to go. I think if you need a shorter PCC to stash in the truck, then a 10mm with a brace will be formidable. The three point stabilization can’t be overstated. Of course, I would never shoulder a brace. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

My carbine is the lowly Hi-Point 10mm w/red dot & co-witness flip up sights, after 800rnds. of every bullet configuration imagined w/not 1 failure of any sort, that's good enough for me to stake my life on. It can be had in a lever gun, but you've got to supply a Marlin 1894(I think) $2k for the conversion. That takes about 2yrs.

I am a big fan of the PCCs! Where they really shine is teaching new shooters how to shoot. The 9mm calibers are very low recoil and are accurate. All my grand kids love shooting them, not so much the .44 Mag. Much easier to train than with pistols/revolvers. Great video and history lesson! Where did you get the light mount for your .357? Thanks.

Thanks for another top-quality video. Your knowledge and experience are valuable and appreciated. I've been a Glock and AR guy since the mid-80s. However, I recently bought a Henry Big Boy in .357 Magnum as a fun gun because it had a look and vibe I was drawn to. That thing is no joke. I was surprised by how hard it smacks steel and obliterates cantaloupes, watermelons, etc. I agree that people who live in oppressive authoritarian communist-controlled blue states should buy one as they are a way, way better alternative than a baseball bat or a sharp stick. It's too bad that .38 Special and .357 Magnum are so expensive, but it is what it is.

I just loaded up a boatload of .357 Carbine ammo for some video projects, components I'd had sitting around for years, so no out-of-pocket costs, just a little time. If you want to shoot a lot you have to reload, and even that has jumped dramatically in prices. Let's get rid of Brandon!

Hi Dick, my favorite PCC is my Ruger 44 carbine. Why Ruger discontinued them is beyond my understanding. Fantastic guns. My only gripe with it is it has a tube magazine instead of a detachable box magazine. Keep up the great videos. Thanks.

Ruger made two types of .44 Mag semi-auto carbines. My understanding is that the ones with the tube magazines tend to be more reliable than those with rotary magazines.

Great video! I have an AR-9 and a Ruger PCC in 9mm, but I'd much rather use one of my .357 Magnum Lever Guns. I have a Winchester 1873 and a Rossi 1892. There is a company, Steve's Guns who produces a short rail for the Rossi M92 that replaces the Buckhorn sight. Under the sight are a series of threaded holes. I've mounted a small Holosun Reflex RDS there and there was enough rail left that I could mount an off set adapter to put a small pistol light on the side. It actually works quite well. One caliber you didn't mention was the .45 Colt. I have a Winchester 94 in .45 Colt. I've not run it across the chronograph yet but I can hit pretty well with it out to 100 yards though I'm still using the factory sights with it. Looking forward to your views on the .30-30.

Some of the 5.7 carbines use a simple lever delay. Compared to simple blowback, delayed actions are lighter in reciprocating weight and lighter charging spring. For little old ladies or people with hand/grip/strength issues. Apart from the MP5 do any 9mm PCC have delays ?

Pistol caliber carbines are cool and fun to shoot. I've had several. It's fun to shoot a 9mm or .45acp at 100- 200 yards. But unless you have a .357 or better It's pointless nowadays. You can get an AR so cheap now that almost anyone can afford to have a decent rifle, sidearm and ammo for both. If it was 1850 then hell yeah it's awesome. If you're broke and inherited 2 firearms of the same caliber and you can barely afford ammo, heck yeah. If you're recoil sensitive maybe but an AR doesn't have much more recoil than a pcc

Like I said in the video, you can buy a cheap-parts AR for way less than half the price of a new lever action, but until SCOTUS bitch slaps a few blue states, some folks simply can't buy a semi-auto.

The only hardcast load I put together for my carbine was a 185 WFN Beartooth bullet loaded over 16.0gr of H110 - the load recommended by Marshall at Beartooth Bullets, but they are out of business now. My Browning carbines don't shoot cast bullets particularly well for some reason.

you can't shoot or intimidate anything with a gun you aint got with you. You've got to have 40 lbs of pack, food, water, ammo, sleep-shelter gear, clothing, armor, night vision, etc, So you aint going to have two longarms for shtf, guys. You aint got a crystal ball that can tell you when you wont have to fight. You can't get men or animals to WAIT while you go get "the right gun for the job", either. So you'll just have to always carry the most versatile longarm that is available and that's a shorty 223 AR with a silencer, night sights and 22lr conversion unit.

I have to say, from experience, DO NOT buy a Hi-Point carbine. I had one in .45 acp. Horrible trigger and trying to get the mag out fast, forget it. I put maybe 75 rounds through it and sold it.

You Never hear anything about a 41 Magnum. They've got so many different rounds of handgun ammunition it's not even funny. I'm not that into guns, but until around 15 years ago, I never heard of a 357 Maximum. I guess you have to be deep into guns to hear about these cartridges.

The .41 was very poplar in the '70-80's for both hunting and police use, but has fallen WAY off of late. The .357 Maximum was never a big deal, too long for almost all revolvers and not chambered in any carbines like lever actions.

unless you add a silencer, night sights and a subsonic ammo OPTION, these things are pointless if you're an able bodied adult. Maybe grandma can do no better than a high point 9mm carbine with a laser, but everyone else is much better off with a shorty AR-15, 60 gr Nosler Partition softpoints, night sights, a silencer, a 22lr conversion unit, 1 in 9" twist, 10.5" skinny barrel, 60 gr Aquila subsonic ammo option, and normal 22's for snapshooting practice. Then you can swap parts to 22lr in 20 seconds (discretely) hold the bolt shut with your thumb, shooting left handed, execute a brain hit to 50m, and be BB gun quiet as you do so. Keep the AR in 223 firing 'mode" unless you see good reason to swap to the 22lr. If you need the gun swiftly, the odds are high that you also need the several times greater power, penetration and effective range of the 223 (as vs the subsonic 22). For me, that good reason would be that it's dark. At night, a silenced, subsonic 22lr autoloading rifle is not nearly the handicap that it is in daytime. A GOOD 223 silencer renders full power 223 ammo no louder than a normal 22lr rifle. and supersonic 'crack" is non-directional in nature. I've had a flock of turkeys at 40m of distance not take off when I harvested 3 of them with the suppressed 223 AR. Animals dont recognize sonic crack as being a threat and they often dont know which way to flee. Men dont know which side of a big tree is cover, either. This phenomenon is MUCH more true when you use the subsonic, suppressed 22lr.

To be honest with all of you. A revolver is far more powerful,reliable,and accurate than a semi automatic pistol. When you measure a barrel on a semi auto it includes the chamber. So if you get a so called full size pistol with a 4.250” barrel it’s really a 3.250” where as a revolver is what it measures out to be. The revolver cartridges are so much more versatile with many options and you can have a rifle and a pistol that can fire the same ammo. Also if you play it smart. Get some weapons chambered in less popular but still in demand with available stock like 45,357,10mm. If and when SHTF happens you won’t be stuck with needing the same ammo everyone else does.
