I drilled my piston and run it on plastic studs to eliminate metal to metal contact like TX etc. As well as spring and piston sleaves/guides I have thin wahers either end of spring to allow it rotate. Opened up and reemed transfer port. Runs smooth, very low recoil with max variation of 8 fps. 11.3 foot pounds.

The piston is from a Mk 4 or later Airsporter or a Mercury.

So the pointed piston is from earlier mk1 and mk2? Do you know what's the purpose as opposed to flat piston head?

Do you think increasing the piston stroke by reducing the washer is ideal for Airsporter? Thanks

The conical piston head was introduced from 1950 on the basis of efficiency and ensuring minimum rebound. It was replaced with the system shown in the video on models from 1965 in line with a move to new production facilities and to simplify manufacturing and save costs. The new piston head was initially made of nylon but proved to become unstable after long term usage as did a number of other components produced in plastics from this time. From the 1980’s in an attempt to achieve more power the Airsporter and Mercury S models were introduced with the reduced height piston head resulting in greater air cylinder swept volume and hence more velocity. This piston head giving increased power, may be fitted to the earlier models but may require some modification to the retaining stud. However you must ensure that any modification does not result in taking the air rifle muzzle energy over the legal limit of 12ft/lb.

@@Buckbury It makes sense to me now why many said the earlier versions are a real catch. No worries I'm outside UK. And big thanks for such an educating explanation. Happy new year to you.

I always understood the mk 1, 2 and 3 Airsporter piston heads were conical in shape? this one, obviously, is flat.
