The bassist can make a simple bassline sound spectacular. The pianist makes you want to get up and dance. The drummer instills a ton of energy into his playing. And about Roy... no words are needed, really. A simply magnificent performance which captures the very essence of jazz. Every time I'm watching this it feels like it's the first time. RIP Roy.

I'm glad that while you was here for the short time that it was that you got to live out your dream as a musician....... and made a mark in the history of jazz just as strong as John Coltrane , Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie , Joe Sample, George Duke, Horace Silver and a host of others just too numerous to mention... thanks for the memories brother.......

what "offbeat" are people talking about, it's obviously just shifted to create the groove. you can tell by how seamlessly it goes into the full arrangement in the end of the solo. I thought it was cool and I can definitely sense the beat he was "talking" about.

My friend, the great drummer and Ed Thigpen, said once that whatever a musician played up on stage, it was their gig. So pretentious or not, it's not for us to judge. I wasn't a huge fan of that solo but that's not my flavor. It was obviously yours, so that's another reason why people should never judge the playing of anyone in jazz.

I was blessed to have first seen Roy on the North Sea Jazz Cruise in 2007. He performed with his group and Marcus Miller (the host) on the ship. Roy blow the house down at the Ahoy Center in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The venue had a full house. It was interesting because in Europe, young folk are really into jazz. Since that time I've heard him on the West Coast, DC and New York. I never got tired of listening to Roy. He was a giant. RIP!

Standing outside of Tower Records near Juilliard, I was blessed to meet this man before "The Roy Hargrove" arrived and my good friend Tichina Vaughn told me, hey you would not believe he has two records in there. A quiet and retiring person in life, Hargrove struggled with kidney failure. He died of cardiac arrest brought on by kidney disease on November 2, 2018 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. According to his manager, Larry Clothier, Hargrove had been on dialysis for the last 14 years of his life. Edit: This makes me sad, because the late great Mr. Roy Hargrove was one of my favorite trumpet players. I was absolutely in love with his mastery over the trumpet. Loved his style. I had no idea that he had died. I've never met you in person Roy, but I will miss your music. Will miss seeing your interviews (especially), on KZbin. RIP bro. This hurts untold numbers of hearts and especially the pain felt throughout the jazz community. :(

This was the first time I've ever felt goosebumps from music before. When everyone joins in after the piano solo I lost my mind

Whatever Fortner was doing on piano, his playing is joyous and brought the Qt out of their funk. Beautiful music.

Wow, what an amazing bunch of jazz musicians. I particularly fell in awe with the crazy run-lick at 3:18 and the backbeat motif at 4:47 (which he shifts even by 1 semitone) - Just amazing :D

Which ever works for you. Holding the trumpet up is usually a good idea, as it allows better air flow. If you look at the first version of this song he has his trumpet held up. Perhaps he's going for a sort of "chill and relax" feel, or maybe he has a medical condition. you never know.

In jazz musicians are always trying to find new ways to achieve a strange sound and just go with it. Dizzy Gillespie flipped jazz on its side with a trumpet that had a bell bent upwards after someone accidentally broke it. He played it and a unique sound came out and he fell in love with it and had a custom trumpet made with the bell curved up.
