The presentation will feature J. Mitchell Johnson’s views on the science of communications, cybernetics, and the ethical challenges faced by documentary filmmakers. Johnson will use examples from his work to describe his own evolving filmmaking creative process to make the point that the line between fact and fiction Is illusory.
J. Mitchell Johnson creates films dedicated to his interest in "human ecology" including World Without Waves which won Santa Fe Film Festival’s Milagra Award and premiered at Moscow’s International Film Festival in 2006. Johnson’s Cold War series, Red Files, won the International Documentary Association’s “Best Limited Series” award. His films have shown on PBS nationwide and other channels. His latest documentary feature, just completed, is Saving North: Rescuing the Wooden Churches of Northern Russia.
His current productions include -- Coming Round, a film documenting the California tribe of Kashia Pomo Indians and their struggle to regain lost lands and cultural traditions…..and -- Remaining Human, a documentary that follows a filmmaker’s obsession to dig for hidden truths about the ecological impact of electric communications.
