Still can't believe this was 20 years ago, filmed in Australia with semi low budget. When I first saw this, the way he played Riddick's character, I knew he will rise to become a super star. So many of us wanted to be like him, body like his. Then when The Fast & The Furious came out, we all had to watch it and said the muscley guy from Pitch Black is in it, not Paul Walker. And you've nailed it ever since then. Well Done Vin, you came a long way & became so successful all started with this. From a Security Bouncer, Dancer, Low Budget Movies & Boom...... I like this version better than what they said in escape from Butcher bay. I like the idea that Riddick is such an outcast, a predator, that he chooses to change himself to live in the dark. He can no longer live like normal humans and needs wielding googles to support the light.

You n00bs don't know anything. In the latest comic it's shown that he is a hyper-mega furian after he spends several years in a time chamber developing his skills. This also allows his thumbs to be either opposable or posable. His hair is actually green and purple polka dots but you never see it because he shaves his head. and the dark and light parts of the movie were used to great effect in the large darken theater.. only two other movies had the same effect on me, The Crow.. and especially Dark City ... Impossible to get the effect at home unless you have a 35 mm print and camera.

On the DVD Version, English Dub, when Riddick looks at Jack, you can hear a bassy "swoosh" noise the moment he looks at Jack, its a small part of the same sound effect used in all Video games when Riddick turns on his eyeshine ability. Similar to when a Predator changes his biomask filter mode. It's not that audible in this clip, but it is faintly noticeable. And, no, it's no sound from the gear or ship, I've isolated the portion with Audacity and listened to it a billion times in a loop, it's a foreign sound that happens exactly the moment he looks at Jack. Always found that fascinating. Kind of like the sound in MGS5 when you move the camera close to your character quickly, it also makes a "swoosh" noise. Fascinating!

In this film Riddick as a main character was a killer and criminal without conscience. Her death complements his image. Fry is like last small bridge to his reunion with the human race. And she needed to die. Very disturbing end even now. Perfect.

When he was Ranger in some Military, He spoke out against the torturing and murdering amongst the people on some Planet and they imprisoned him. There are times when I wonder if Riddick really is the killer that many claim he is. The dude was willing to save people he only knew for a few days, against his survival instincts. Maybe he has killed but it was out of self-defense or to save someone else. Or maybe he really is a killer and this is a story about a murderer who is finding his humanity again. Either way, I like that it doesn't confirm nor deny anything that is said about Riddick.

Prior to the scene in Pitch Black where Carolyn convinced Riddick to go back with her for Jack and the imam, best believe that Riddick was the killer that people claimed he was. Remember that were it not for Johns offering Jack (a kid) to use as bait, Riddick was actually entertaining the thought of killing someone from that group. I mean, I like the guy, but Riddick was nobody's friend at first. He'd ghost anyone without second thought. It's as uu say towards the end, Pitch Black is actually Riddick's redemption arc.

The movie definitely implies he didn't know till they were dragging the power cells. In the Unrated cut which I think is the only cut I've ever had, there's a short scene right before the Curio Collector dies where Riddick looks at her as if he just now smelled something different which he says later, because she started her cycle as they were walking, or at least that's what I've interpreted it as since first seeing the movie 20 years ago. I say that because she's not injured at all, and there's only one other way a woman can bleed when she's not injured.

Those eyes are a dormant trait that manifests itself in alpha furyans at some point during their life. Riddick had surgery on his arm at Butcher's Bay sometime before Pitch Black when the eyes manifested and believed the surgeon gave it to him.

Yeah, it is the best. The 2nd movie was awful, though I did like the prison scenes. The 3rd movie was just a repeat of the 1st, despite being a nice return to form. And the cartoon sequel to the first was actually pretty good, despite it's own flaws. And there are the video games, which are good in their own right. But this first film was like lightning in a bottle. It was made to be a one-off, not a start to a franchise.
