Hundreds of years ago, prior to even the creation of the Guardians, Pitch Black ruled Earth in the shadows. This boogeyman manipulated, morphed and blended into darkness... forever craving the destruction of pure dreams… Using his ability to know every individuals’ greatest fears, Pitch’s nightmares proliferated across the minds of all of mankind allowing him to grow in power. At the peak of the Dark Ages, before The Guardians were chosen, all people were submissive, influenced and frightened by Pitch as he had always desired, but why did he want to be feared? Where did these powers come from? How did he rise? Well the rise of the Nightmare King is also the tragic fall of a father and hero.

The only reason people don't pay too much attention to it is because of its box office, which is unfair. It only made a certain amount of movie and is now considered a flop because of it. Even though Reck it Ralph, Life of Pie, Lincoln, Breaking Dawn and many more big shot movies were all released the *SAME MONTH* as Rise of the Guardians. The movie suffered because of poor timing and it sucks because it's such a magnificent film!

You might also want to mention that the whole reason he was targeting Jack in the movie was because Jack is NightLight reincarnated. To corrupt the first person to oppose him the first true Guardian.

Pitch was never very well versed after becoming the nightmare King.

@@anonymousfellow8879 the Guardians do add to their ranks over time when night light became human he lost the title of guardian along with a good portion of his memories that was the reason why Jack was chosen to fight pitch though because his past life had beaten pitch also not all of the spirits are chosen by the Man in the Moon some Spirits have magic through the means they came into existence for example certain spirits would have their powers from cause of death for example if someone were to die in a fire they quite possibly could have Fire based powers like Jack he died from hypothermia and drowning meaning he gain power over ice and frost not so much water though Jack may be hydrophobic as well I mean if you died by Drowning even if you did forget you were killed by that I think that would leave a scar on your mind that would definitively remain there.

Jack essentially died. Or, at the very least, he was simply too close to death by the time Manny saved him. The others never went through any sort of trauma when they became Guardians/spirits, so they kept their memories.

I feel like Toothiana and Sanderson have the more interesting stories of all the guardians. Sanderson has a crazy yet fun story that is also bittersweet. Toothiana has a sad story that truly shapes her as a guardian and as a person.

I agree. He was a good man doing good things and in a single moment of weakness fell so hard. Tragic villains are often so much better then simple ones. To see someone start off with good intentions only to lose their way is way more engaging.

He's definitely up there with Frollo and Mother Gothel as being more connivingly manipulative and sinister. These types of villains reeaaallly get under your skin and made you GENUINELY scared. I also found him the most compelling out of the three-cause let's be real here. If any of the GUARDIANS wound up forgotten/unseen/unwanted. Bunny broke after a WEEK(at most) of being unseen. How long would it take for all of the guardians to snap after HUNDREDS OF YEARS of not being remembered.

Honestly, Pitch Black has to be one of the most compelling villains in recent history. He’s cruel, mysterious, dignified, and ominous all at the same time. And, of course, he’s literally the embodiment of fear. In other words, he can never truly be defeated; only overpowered or suppressed

To riff on Jude Law as Pitch in the film, “Finally! Someone who knows how to tell a story right!” Pitch was one of my favorite characters to read about in the novels and storybooks, and as he is a polarizing character, it is rare I find someone who will discuss his story with empathy and sadness as well as hate, determination, and of course fear. You know finding out about his daughter and their relationship really adds an extra layer to what says to Jack in Antarctica about longing for a family. I mean I get he was trying to get Jack on his side but with this information it just makes that scene sadder because he actually did mean it, he searched for his daughter, he tried to save her when he was tricked, and then her basically disowning him for centuries, that had to be agony for him. He wanted her back but it was too little too late, and I think in that moment for a brief second when trying to get Jack on his side he cracked and showed that who he was before was still inside, possibly still fighting but no one could see so no one would help, though since it was stated that there’s still a chance they can save him I’m gonna hold on to the slim hope they will do just that.

Long story short before he became known as Santa he was a thief who had no family growing up and pillages half of Europe then went to Russia and found a magical village, and had a change of heart when he saw Pitch possessing a huge bear who was supposed to be one of the village's defenses. Pitch, possessing the bear, ate the wizard who was kinda the teacher and leader of the village and then after North killed the bear the magic of the kids in the village [Katherine included] brought the wizard and the bear back to life, the wizard [named Ombric, by the way] decided to make North his apprentice. Anyway I'm not sure what happens next since I haven't read all the books yet. Also the name of the village is Santoff Claussen. I was going to make this comment shorter since at the beginning of it I said 'long story short', but I guess I just got kinda carried away.

You know that old quote "It is better to be feared than to be loved"? Well, that's not the full quote. The full quote is "It is better to be feared than to be loved if you cannot be both". I just feel like this represents Pitch perfectly. He lost everything and was corrupted, so nobody loves him at all and he has to make people fear him to keep from being forgotten. DANG IT, HIS STORY IS SO SAD!!! CURSE MY SOFT DARKNESS LOVING HEART!!! * dying empath noises * Edit: I just realized something. Pitch craves nightmares, right? This wording makes it sound like he almost feeds off of them to increase his power. What if after he takes in the dark energy, the nightmare is gone because he basically absorbed it into himself? If nightmares can occur without him inducing them in this universe (idk if they can, I haven't read the books in a while), maybe he could take away the naturally occuring nightmares and use the power he gains to cause nightmares that punish truly terrible people? Every once in a while, though, he could give a kid a nightmare about something dangerous that they truly need to be scared about so their fear of danger is reinforced.

Pitch had always been an interesting character to me. And I had heard that he had once been a father and wanted so badly to know what happened to him. This is wonderful. Great video about discussing Pitch Black, Isaac. Rise of the Guardians is one of my favourite DreamWorks animated movies. When I watch it, I always keep saying, "This film has a light of darkness story, just like in Kingdom Hearts." I sometimes imagine Sora, Donald and Goofy meeting Jack Frost, the Guardians and Jamie.

You forgot to say he thought his family was DEAD after the fearling attacked his homeland! That's why he volunteered to guard the prison. When he heard her voice he really hoped it was her :( Also, the Pookas were NOT little! haha And when Emily Jane saw him again, she was upset because she thought he forgot her, but he didn't, even when his heart was corrupted and he was possessed. This is a terrible story! I know he didn't make it up, and that's the actual story of Pitch, but if you really, REALLY think about it... None of the things that Pitch did was his fault. It was the Fearlings that made him this way, he loved his daughter and wanted to help her. He was tricked by the evil entities by scaring him, making him think his daughter was in trouble. My question is, with all of this WHY DON'T THEY HELP PITCH!? It's like Super man protecting the world for YEARS, and then suddenly a Super villain corrupts him, making him evil. Yes that's horrifying to think about, but can we not help Superman after he's help us so many times before? In this story it sounds like they didn't even try! Sad.

I fear its possible that whatever the fearlings did to Pitch, that it cannot be undone. While the guardians are able to fight fear, I think the reason they don't help him is probably because they don't know how to or they don't have the power to do so, which makes Pitch's fate all the more tragic.

That Is so deep and so dark I agree with that one After all these years his daughter is so angry with her Father she was waiting for him to come find her but then he was not himself anymore he turn darker as the Nightmare King aka the Boogeyman, he Destroy his ship, kill off his own Wife after she sent Emily away to a save place when she became Mother Nature but in the final book of Guardians of childhood as William Joyce said on Twitter: there is still hope that the Guardians will find a way to Trun him back to his own self again. Pitch’s story was so sad. One of the greatest hero’s had the thing he loved most used against him to turn him into an evil being. Pitch was good but in the end it was his love for his daughter that ultimately caused him to be possessed by the fearlings. It’s so sad. He didn’t deserve this

Solely movie wise, pitch black was really not a bad dude, he just didnt want to be forgotten, the feeling of being nothing more than just a myth, a joke, for millenia, thats real hurtful, he just wanted to be remembered, but the only way any guardian can be remembered is through their powers, so the only way he could be remembered was through fear. He wasnt lying when he told jack that they were similar, they truly were, pitch had just been feeling what jack had for a much longer time.

At the time of pictures possession his daughter Emily was living with her mother when all of the nightmare guys got loose of the prison their home was the first thing they attacked but she was not home, instead flying around on the special spaceship that she had a long time ago. Her mother had given her a chance to escape her to her spaceship and fly away but her mother was not so lucky. ended up having to jump out the window of their home with a toy to make the Pirates think that both the mother and daughter had fallen to their death. she eventually found and was adopted by a space god. This is how she gained in learn the power to control nature to later become mother nature but after a fight with her space dad he in a fit of rage accidently traped her in her spaceship damaging it to the point where it just looks like a hunk of rock and sent it hurtling through space. After I Millennial or so the Sandman had found her but by this point she had already been furious at everything that she saw as a father figure. She did eventually meet her original of father again but she was beyond Furious when she found out what had become of him and his attempts of replacing her via Katherine and nightlight.

To answer your second question NightLight had given up his magical abilities to save the girl Catherine and slowly became a normal human boy who would eventually become Jack Frost as a side effect. don't exactly know how it completely happened but the final book of the Guardians of Childhood series finally came out and from what the writer said on his Twitter account this final book answers the question of what really happened to night light

I always thought that pitch was a Guardian when humans needed fear to survive then was replaced by the others. A little fear is healthy.

You forgot the fact that he thought his daughter was dead and that his wife was killed by the same creatures he captured. That's why is was so hard on him. He thought she was dead and eventually, his sanity was so far gone that for a split second he actually believed that she was there. And Emily Jane escaped on a star, was trained by a constellation to tame the weather, and eventually when she fell into a sleep, Sandy tamed her rogue star and they became close friends, both of them came to the earth together and when the star landed Emily Jane woke up and took over on earth, while Sandy was sleeping for millennia. All of your questions (Aside from how Sandy came back) are in the books. I'm still astounded by how many people are unaware of this. I have a fanfic for RotG going that uses all the lore from the books and man are people floored when they read anything that I pull from source material other than the movie XD

because pitch had created the perfect plan to overthrow the guardians as HE knew them. he targeted each of them - repurposing sandy's dreams and plotting to isolate him and kill him, since sandy represented the greatest threat to pitch; threatening north, the one most known for bouts of passion, so he wouldn't be believed; stealing the teeth and fairies to weaken tooth and control children's memories; striking on easter to deal the greatest blow to bunny, and to avoid having to contend with the celebratory monolith of christmas (probably figured from the grinch movies that stealing christmas would be too difficult lmao). but he'd made no plans for jack. he tries to include jack in his machinations, targeting jack's fears and trying to bribe him with the teeth... but pitch doesn't have the benefit of hundreds of years of reconaissance to understand and leverage jack's strengths and weaknesses - hell, even JACK doesn't know his own strength! so pitch has to operate on the fly. this is why he loses, and why he shows vulnerability in antarctica (in a desperate bid to make jack sympathize and join him). since manny recruited jack (a "neutral party" and a wild card) at the eleventh hour, pitch's otherwise perfect plan failed. jack was an unknwon variable that pitch hadn't accounted for, who ultimately turned the tide and allowed the guardians to not die. pitch only fails because jack joins the guardians in an attempt to learn more about his past.

Jack Frost was Once Upon a Time NightLight. Think Peter Pan, but with more of a fairy like approach the man in the moon's personal defense against Nightmares when Pitch attacked the moon, night light alone was able to stop him and trap him by tapping himself into pitche's heart. He targeted Jack Frost because he found out his one Nemesis had finally been turned into something weaker than him. Something he could more easily trick, brainwash corrupt and put under his control. and what better way to finally win against the Man in the Moon then to use what was left of his best friend against them

One thing I'd like to know about is the Easter Bunny's backstory. I like how you mentioned the original books because the final book has finally come out and it stars Jack Frost specifically. Jack Frost is actually NightLight The Man in the Moon's original and personal protector against bad dreams. Something about giving the kidnapped girl Katheryn a kiss removed his powers and shortly after he be slowly become a normal boy.

My family and I got a new appreciation for Easter after watching this. I remember in theaters hearing how he described his holiday (bunny) and I felt his love for it. I could finally say that I understood this holiday and why we celebrate it. It wasn't really something I ever thought of until this film, it was a holiday I celebrated growing up because it was fun.
