I use trays similar to yours for my carnivorous plants, but I keep aquatic Utricularia in the water in the trays. The aquatic Utricularia are freaking awesome carnivorous plants! I'm maintaining three species and I find they are just as fascinating as the terrestrial carnivorous plants.

Thank you thank you thank you for this!! We are just starting, and starting with Venus Fly traps, but I don't like the look of a small planter sitting in water .... this is way more cool and better looking! We live in SC, how many hours of sun do they need? My deck gets sun from sun up till maybe 4/5 pm.... is that enough, I will have probably looked this up right after I type this ... hah but thanks again for such a great educational, helpful DIY!

Just built a bog exactly like this. Did you have any problems in winter with water freezing in the PVC pipes and expanding/cracking? Or water expanding/cracking the container itself? In Western Washington we've been getting some cold winter storms the past few years down to single digits at night. So curious if you've had issues with freezing in the pot and how you handled it.

I need to try this this year! Thanks so much for this, Rachel; I've always loved carnivorous plants. (I wonder if one of my comments on a previous video of your bog garden helped inspire you to create this tutorial for a smaller version.) A smaller size should be able to fit on my little patio. I worry a bit about it getting enough sun, as the patio is northwest facing. Do you have any recommendations for some carnivorous plants that have slightly lower light requirements, just to be safe? I really love fly traps, but I've killed every one I've tried to keep. And don't worry about the need for voice over, it's completely understandable.

Dude this was hilarious but very sad as well. All my plants are carnivorous and I actually just bought 2 terrestrial bladderworts yours are aquatic. I also have hitchhikers from other purchases. My advice would be to seek advice from a carnivorous plant forum. There’s a entire community that loves bladderworts. They have beautiful flowers and eat pest that are harmful to our other plants so in our world their very helpful. I’m sure you can get some advice and probably someone to even buy “the ugly thing from aliens” lol from you. I hope this helps and sorry again to hear about the experience but your right a carnivorous plant isn’t appropriate for your set up. Good luck

Not very well, American pitcher plants are notoriously difficult to grow in terrariums long term. They really just do best outside.

Do you have any advice on water treatment/conditioning for those who haven't been getting much (or any) rain? I am on a well and my part of Florida hasn't seen much rain in the last year. So far this years been a bust for it too.
@Plantaholic4 жыл бұрын
You could use RO water or distilled
@pershop49504 жыл бұрын
A couple of solutions for non-rain water. 1. Use Zero-Filter filter system to purify any water you want to use. 2. Buy distilled water from grocery store or auto store of anywhere else you find it. 3. Buy RO water from same places as distilled water or also, from vending machines. 4. Use bottom watering or bog style water (like in this video) to maximize water usage.

Thank you. I hit up google and can't find an answer to my next question so will be experimenting but wanted a second opinion - do you think putting plants in a bucket of tap water for a few days would suck up enough of the nutrients? Between my life experiences with well water and the research I've been doing I think I have more iron/iron eating bacteria than anything else.

That is prime growing season,you could keep them in their pots at that time but ideally you would plant them before then if making a permanent bog garden

How can you tell how much water to put down the pipe?
@Plantaholic4 жыл бұрын
You can see into it, but I really base it on how the sphagnum looks. So I water, give it a day and if it still is limp or dry,water again. You could also fill it until it leaks out the holes drilled a few inches down from the soil line
