Ha, worked on this at practice. Kid said it was “stupid”. Happened the next day in game with that kid on the mound and turned two. One of those moments I’ll never forget.

That was interesting, and I admit that I have never taught that process on a hard hit comeback ball. Sounds like a good idea. I always directed them to quickly turn, look, and throw when the SS is close to 2nd base (similar to SS and 2nd baseman during a potential double play). A question that immediately comes to mind is can the youngsters on a soft comeback remember not to take the extra time to execute the shuffle step, thereby allowing the batter runner to take three extra steps toward 1B, and just turn and fire to the SS on the 1-6-3?
