Well, it partly did. Emo and Goth both diverged from Punk music, with Goth as a subgenre of Post-Punk and Emo as a byproduct of Hardcore Punk/Post-Hardcore. But now, they are pretty much their own thing.

It's not about "telling kids to "learn history and respect traditions"" but about how stupid is society again giving credit to some for something they didnt do and ignoring the credit the underground deserved after 30 years. Many of the mainstream "emo" bands from 2002 on are just playing regular pop music while wearing a haircut (not all of them). To me is as stupid as the music world and music media forgetting two decades of rather very well known bands before those.

I would only disagree with the general dismissal of "emo revival" but that's pretty minor. Of course there are important bands missing but it's a 5 minute video. I suppose a lot of people still think they're emo bands, even though there's still emotive hardcore, Midwest emo, etc around. When emo hit the 00s, it became a whole new genre called emo pop punk. Those bands would fit into that category, especially their earlier albums. But they're not emo, they're emo pop punk and that's a different thing because it's a fusion of emo and pop punk.

As a big fan of the album, i can see where you are coming from. However sad songs on that level had been around for years before Pet Sounds. Frank Sinatra's 1955 concept album 'In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning' is an incredibly depressing album dealing themes of loneliness, introspection, lost love, failed relationships, depression and night life etc. That could be a huge starting point if we go back that far.
