In this episode, I'm joined by my good friend Keith Nester to talk about some of the pitfalls new Catholic converts may experience on their journey. Keith is a former Protestant pastor (with 20+ years in ministry), a Catholic convert himself, the author of some fantastic books, and the host of a popular KZbin channel - and he knows a thing or two about this topic!
We talk about bad liturgy, bringing kids to Mass, a loss of programs, events, and a sense of community we once had in our Evangelicals churches, sermons and homilies, music in the Mass - and much, much more. This episode is all about being guide for those looking into the Church - a kind of peek into what you may encounter - what we encountered - that wasn't always exactly what we expected.
It's an honest, earnest conversation about how, sometimes, our expectations weren't exactly met - and how maybe those expectations weren't the best anyway. Plus much more.
For more from Keith please check out our extensive back catalogue - he's appeared may times - and find him online on his website: www.down2earthm...

great interview; not that it's related but as a youngster back in Australia, we had an old Irish priest who bless his heart, didn't have the most inspiring ways of celebrating Mass but interestingly enough, when I look back on my wonderful childhood, I often think of him, very kind man, but then we had a substitute priest from Malta for awhile and oh boy, did he love the incense, so much so, by end of the school Mass every Friday (and due to it being a smaller place of worship) it was thick as fog, along with kids coughing and spluttering

Wonderful episode! Our family greatly appreciates the time you spend creating insightful content. We come from a Protestant background and currently in RCIA expecting confirmation at the Easter vigil. It’s been a whirlwind journey but oh my goodness; what an adventure! The Mass was so foreign to us but we are beginning to understand all the symbolism it offers. Our parish has been so welcoming and patient with us. It brings us joy to see all the children and babies with their parents. Hadn’t expected to see that but it shows how serious the Catholic Church respects the family!

A great conversation. It’s not easy as a convert, because we have to learn everything and go in to a new place and we’re used to being entertained and educated and we’re accustomed to our emotions being tied to a good church or a good day at church. Mass is so much more!..but we can still work on the areas we can work on. I think greeters at the door are so welcoming and makes people feel welcome and want to return. Kieth I just love your outlook and views. I am right there with you! Your book was the first Catholic book I read..and I finished it in 3 days. It was very helpful. I love our Catholic faith and the Church Jesus started. We are so blessed to have Jesus at mass every single day. God bless you both in sharing the good news and sharing our faith.

I'm a 70 year old, Protestant, looking into Catholicism. ( I figured I'd go for the oldest convert to Catholicism in the Guinness Book of World Records 😂). I'm blown away by what I thought was true about Catholicism all these years! I love your channel, Keith! Your sense of humor matches mine 😁 and I appreciate how you just say it like it is ("Oh. This is really lame." "Not experienced as advertised." 😂)

Oh my gosh! I love these two Keiths! I was laughing and bawling and feeling so appreciative of what I was hearing so that I can learn and adjust my thinking as I look into Catholicism. ❤

As Catholics we worship God His way. We don't need to be entertained by the music and preaching. We are there for Jesus. I will take the bells and smells and His body and blood. A PASTOR has to keep them coming back with entertainment or they will move to the next church.

Re: bad liturgy (discussion around 1 hour mark): I like to say an authority figure trying to be hip to attract the youth is just like a man dressing in drag to attract women. It will always repel rather than attract. An authority figure should be as different from the youth he presides over as men are different from women.

Splendid video and I have to mention this and that is I can understand why a Protestant will have a hard time to understand and adjust to the Catholic Church way of how we celebrate Holy Mass and what the Catholic Church teaches, because it’s totally different of how Catholics worship God and teaches things of God versus of how Protestants teaches the ways of God how they worship God it’s totally different.Thank you for this marvelous presentation may it help people understand your presentation of what it’s trying to teach people Amen 🙏

You can join the ministry in the church. I don't know in the US, but in Indonesia we have church organization, with appointed people to be in charge of many things like choir coordinator, head of liturgy, etc.

Our Parish has a least 2 - one for the public school kids (called either CCD or PSR) and another for adults. Either way, these must be officially approved of by the Bishop if they are on Church property (since the Bishop is ultimately responsible for the Teaching office of the Diocese). Of course the Pastor is likely delegated to approve for the Bishop. The Bishop will also delegate the leaders of these studies; however you can probably volunteer if you like (to lead). I taught our 6th grade public school kids for one year, but had to give it up due to my hearing impairment - I realized kids like to have something called "discussions" HaHa! : ) I was quickly replaced - don't worry. Anyway, you are also always free to have them in your home which does not require the Bishops approval. Perhaps you are more social than me, but I have enough Commentaries to read for a life-time (start with Aquinas' Catena Aurea, then the 29 volumes of Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture).
