Pittsburgh Steelers Mason Rudolph - What Went Wrong. Why did Mason Rudolph sit on the sidelines so long. Why didn't Coach Mike Tomlin see his recent talent development sooner.

I think a lot of that has to do with Mason’s, confidence, team oriented attitude, humble attitude, football IQ, all around nice friendly attitude, experience and how long he’s been a Pittsburgh Steeler. I interviewed him when he was a rookie at training camp and although impressive then he has really come a long way. Good to see him finally getting a good opportunity. Thanks for the comment👍

@@steelcitynewsI hope the Steelers organization sees Mason as a true franchise quarterback because I honestly don’t think even Big Ben was as accurate as Mason throwing the ball. I remember countless overthrown bombs to the wide receivers. Mason has a nack for putting the ball on the money and at exactly the right time!

Here's what went wrong with Rudolph, IMO. First, Ben was no help. Second, when Rudolph had to start, he had no prep, no qb coach, and a poor OC who didn't adapt the offense to his skillset. Then he got knocked out after making a great play and got rushed back. In 2021, he played in poor conditions with less than 24 hours notice and DJ and Pat fumbled away the win, leading everyone to say "He couldn't beat the winless Lions" even though he did enough to win. Then came the real issue. Tomlin. He wanted a mobile quarterback and he overvalues where a player is drafted. Hence he signs first round castoffs from other teams. Trubisky, Haskins, Ebron, etc. And then they drafted Pickett. Now they feel they're handcuffed to him because they used a first round pick on him. The steelers used to be about drafting the best player and playing the best player. Now they're not. If they were, Warren would've started this season over Harris and Rudolph would've started over Kenny and Mitch.
@steelcitynews6 ай бұрын
Thanks! Those are Excellent points👍 It seems Mason has always been seen as just a backup and has never really been given the reins to just be the starter. Someone always has to be out for him to get an opportunity. Definitely appreciate the comment.
@LuisMartinez-xn9mu6 ай бұрын
I can add to that. Jones would be at left guard protecting Mason’s blind side. Daniels would be playing center, Cole at right guard , anybody could be at right tackle, at least Mason could see him coming. Tomlin loves to play everyone out of their best position.
@Nisfor3726 ай бұрын
Having a mobile QB is nice but if you have a very good OL you don't need one. Brady, Manning and now even 38 year old Joe Flacco are proof. Pocket awareness and movement in it is much more important. Getting the ball to the right person at the right time is the best thing a QB can do. Look what Mason is doing. He is allowing players to get open for big plays and in return the running game is good.

Tomlin plays favorites too. When it wasnt popular after the Garrett issue he abandoned him. Also, Ben was terrible with his lack of support for Mason. And Tomlin just let Ben run things his way then. Tomlin made some better decisions late this year but only due to others forcing him. He has a hard time making the hard decisions and is going to struggle with this whole Pickett thing. Kenny acting like a baby makes Tomlin get weak.
@steelcitynews6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Much appreciated 👍 Mason did get drafted in less than ideal circumstances. I expected he was drafted to be Ben’s successor then since Ben stayed longer, Mason fell into that backup zone and seemed to be treated as such. Tomlin has said he doesn’t make “knee jerk decisions” It took almost 3 games to decide to give Mason a chance. Mason could have started much earlier.

Steelers front office was very open about wanting a 'mobile' qb. What the steelers needed wasn't a mobile qb, but one that could stand in the pocket and stretch the field (thereby opening up the run game).

Lots of armchair coaches here…….and ain’t one of them smarter than Mike Tomlin. Over the years MT has managed to take every banged up defense, lame armed QBs, and ever changing O-line and get the most out of them. If Rudolph felt Tomlin was treating him unfairly, he would’ve asked to be traded. But he stuck it out and now his window of opportunity has presented itself. I think he’s learned a lot on the sidelines (especially what NOT to do)……….don’t be afraid to go deep…….don’t take sacks…….and don’t throw interceptions! I’m happy for Mason right now and for the Steelers. HERE WE GO!

It's not rocket science here folks. We had a high school caliber OC, and Ben couldn't move the ball with Canada calling plays either. Trubisky was a bust, Pickett is a project. Ditch Mitch, draft a QB to compete with with KP8 for backup and roll with Mason, who already proved he's a capable backup that could manage the game and be a pretty damn good starting QB.

As a big fan of the Steelers since 1969 , you must observe the preseason games to evaluate each player period no matter what string is playing period for if you are going to play well then you are going to play well when it counts period and Mason was the clear heads above the QB’s period with throwing the ball period !! And all the fans were talking how well Mason looked after the preseason but the coaches did not see this really ?? Something is wrong in the locker room period any ways Mason is on top of his game now and he has a point statement to make and he will show the world why he was a Awesome choice in the draft period !! Let’s Go Mason it’s time to wake the world up !! Amen !!🙏!!!!!!

Another thing that Masson does well that Kenny and Mitch do not do at all, is he scans his receivers before firing the ball. The other 2 yahoos lock in on their primary receiver and do not know how to look off or scan thru progressions. this is primarily why Kenny will be a bust and nothing better than a back-up if he cannot fix it.

Mason got no playing time in rookie season. Had 8 starts in 19' went 5=3 13td's 9 picks. Little high on the picks but not everyone can go 15=1 to start a career. He got no playing time in 20',21',22' and I don't count the covid game or the tie with Lions. No starts in 23' until Tomlin was forced and he hates it too. There is something going on there and yes the Garrett play bothers Tomlin, even tho Garrett lied. That's why he has been buried at 3 his whole career. Mason may not be a franchise QB but he is the best QB on this team. The more he plays he will build confidence and maybe give the Steelers 10 solid years from now.

Maybe you all don't remember a game a few years ago against Cleveland? There was a fight. He was accused of calling someone the N word Nobody else on either team heard it but it was a big deal. Ben comes back. We have a black head coach. Mason gets screwed. We all got screwed, these last three games have been STEELER FOOTBALL. That guy jas elevated the entire team. Every time Ben took the field I thought we could win and even though I would have rather had KC I'm hoping the Browns make it to the next round so after we kick the Bills asses we can send Flaco packing for old time sake.

Here's what happened: Miles Garrett swung a helmet at Rudolph trying to kill him and to save his own a$$ he accused Mason of issuing a racial slur. Tomlin got offended and angered at this notion and black balled Rudolph for eternity. Cooler heads prevailed in the off-season as Mason remained unsigned and the Steeler's needed an experienced backup. MT's hand picked #1 draft pick goes down after being one of the worst QB's in the league and Mitch looks worse than a high school QB trying to make the squad. After having zero choices remaining, Mason is given a chance. Leading up to his first start there was still some doubt as to whether KP would be medically cleared to C-block Mason. But low and behold, he is not cleared and Mason soars like a big beautiful eagle! And he continues soaring right into the playoffs. Now Tomlin's hand is shown, if he backtracks on Mason now it will be so apparent to everyone that he has a vendetta against the guy. Tomlin's worst nightmare is Rudolph taking this team deep, or may I dare say, all of the way this year because then there is no getting rid of him. I think if that ever becomes the case, Tomlin will leave (retire) so as to not having to support Mason as he genuinely dislikes him and will never support him all due to one unsubstantiated accusation by a guy trying to reduce his suspension and fines.

I wish I could take credit for this but a lady said when Mason got here he looked like a young man and now he looks like a man. She is right he has matured and I'll take it one step farther. Bill Cowher once said adversity doesn't build character it reveals character. Most of us would have given up but he waited for one more chance and now it's up to him what he does with it.

Mason is doing ok and the best QB on the team. I’m happy for him and the team plays hard for him. Its time for Tomlin to move on. So many bad things go on. Playing favorites over the right player. Not moving on from bad players. He is stubborn and wanted both Trubisky who had bad video from his days in the Windy City. Pickett was and is a low ceiling QB who lacks arm talent and needed time to understand the game. Rudolph won the job last year but did not get it. I’m not saying Rudolph is great he just showed what the offense can be with a good QB. I hope Tomlin frees the team from his stubborn reign.
@randomguy61175 ай бұрын
In Rudolph's three starts this year, he has posted a passer rating of 112 or better in each one. I looked around the NFL to see if any other QB has posted a passer rating of 112 or better in three consecutive starts. Only found two: Purdy and Prescott. And none have done it in four straight games. Yeah, it's only three games, but he's playing at a level hardly any other QB in football has managed over any three consecutive games this year.

Also threw a should be pick 6 on the opening drive, lucky he was playing a bunch of scrubs cuz he hit that Raven DB between the numbers. Yeah, he sees the field so good. He just threw for 80 yards outside one 10 yard slant that goes to the house, BTW that was a HOSPITAL BALL against a starting safety that gets DJ killed. The only thing Mason has done that we haven't seen in years is face an actual defense. Two of the leagues worst and a practice squad.

@snagginbirdies1006 Do you have a better suggestion as to who should be starting? We’ve seen a triple digit QBR for 3 consecutive games. When was the last time there was a single game that had one? We’re also seeing receivers hit in stride allowing for RAC yards. Another thing is deep ball accuracy. Something 1 and 2 don’t possess. Which is also why the running game is now working. Without a downfield throwing threat, the other team’s defense has about 10-15 yards to cover. Notice George Pickens was throwing blocks and not bitching despite getting 0 targets? Harris isn’t getting tackled as soon as the ball is in his hands? He’s also not cryptic when questioned? They haven’t required defensive scores to stay in games? Above all he has more than 1 scoring drive per game. Is able to string some first downs together to move the ball instead of 3 & out after 3 & out. Owns almost half of the TD passes in just 3 games. They’re doing well. Just be happy. Who cares who is QB as long as they’re winning. If he throws 4 INTs at Buffalo and they get blown out, then it’s pretty much over. Can’t say they’ll beat Buffalo but if they lose I doubt the blame will be squarely on Rudolph. My guess is they’ll probably lose but I doubt they’ll get blown out.
