Great, simple explanation, thanks Jon. I've seen lots of explanations in the past about using pivot tables, but I could never get them to work easily with my data. Your comments from 2:20 made the lightbulb turn on! Yes, that is very similar to what my data looks like! I going to start watching your other videos, and I'm looking forward to being able to make much more use of pivot tables in the future.

Nice introduction to pique one's interest. Pivot tables are very powerful tools. I tried to explain how useful they were to a friend, and she said she didn't need that,t that she could just write formulas for whatever she needed. Alas, FUD 2.0 had reared it's head: Fear from one's Uneducated knowledge leading to Dismissal of worth of the tool.

Thanks Jack! Yeah I’ve found that pivot tables can be a tough sell. But I won’t stop trying because of their power, speed, and flexibility. I’d like to make more videos like this to help bring awareness to pivot tables. And I’d like those videos to be something that you could share with friends and coworkers to help them see the benefits. So for anyone reading this, please feel free to leave a comment with suggestions on what you’d like to see in a short video that explains more about the benefits of pivot tables. That’s if this video is missing anything. Thanks again! 🙌

Hi Jon, I have a question regarding the Add Data to Model option when creating a new pivot table but have been unable to figure out how I can message you other than in Comments. Where would you prefer I ask my question (and thank you if you response to this comment or my question!).

I'm scared of pivot tables because in 2010-ish I had a large calculation resulting in a column of "data" (in hindsight, was the pivot table the best way to get there, but we're talking classic Excel here). The input was regularly adjusted, and once I forgot to refresh the pivot table, being used to the rest of the sheet automatically calculating when something changed. As the sum total was correct (correct enough probably) , no alarm bells went off. So the question now is: is it possible to have a pivot refresh when the data changes? Or do we need a VBA code that refreshes-on-change....

Great question! There are a few solutions. Pivot Tables have a setting to automatically refresh when the workbook opens. If you want to refresh every time the data changes then we still need VBA. Here is a video that explains the macro you can use. Pivot Tables: Automatically Update When Source Data Changes kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHqUhoSZjtmfZ6M I’m really hoping the Microsoft updates pivot tables to include automatic refresh. I talk more about that in my video on the new PIVOTBY function. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3fVq6N7m8mKoqMsi=VU4VO30MO2mLfwvR I hope that helps. Thanks! 🙂
