The rumor comes from a joke Phil made in the "Rack Shack & Benny" audio commentary, where he mocked the simplistic chewing animation in that episode. People took it literally, and here we are

Thank you that explains so much

I don’t see why people would take it seriously considering Phil had a sarcastic tone when making the joke.

Thanks for the clarification. I was about to repeat this online but decided to fact-check myself first(wise to do before stating any uncertain info) and your video popped up at the top of the search results, but seemed to be the only one claiming it was false. You stated everywhere you looked though, even checking the book, which I appreciate. I own the autobiography book but haven't read it yet, but assumed that was where they had gotten the information. I hate when people post misinformation as "fun facts" as those can be harder to fact-check right away, as well as ruins the fun of fun facts.

I have mentioned this “fact” in passing to friends before, but now I know better! I don’t even remember seeing the original Tumblr post, I think I might have read it second hand on some article? Anyway, thank you for doing your part to defeat this rumor weed

SpongeBoy?

@@TrainsCatsOtherStories When making SpongeBob, they thought SpongeBoy was copyrighted by a mop, but it was actually the name of a pencil

@@emmayoung736 Huh! I never knew that! But why would someone call a pencil spongeboy lol. A mop makes more sense.
