Purl, directed by Kristen Lester and produced by Gillian Libbert-Duncan, features an earnest ball of yarn named Purl who gets a job in a fast-paced, high energy, bro-tastic start-up. Yarny hijinks ensue as she tries to fit in, but how far is she willing to go to get the acceptance she yearns for, and in the end, is it worth it?

I love this. It's realistic. You can't force people to accept you but you can make an effort to fit in first and slowly introduce them to the real you. It's not that the guys are evil, it's just that she is unfamiliar and people tend to stay away from unfamiliar things, so she made herself into something they are comfortable with and slowly convince them to try something new. She first earned their respect and from then on it's easier

This is how I felt in a company I worked. I was purl, I never changed who I was, but people started to respect me. I was a top worker and some of them didn't like me because of that. Suddenly more people entered the company and I was the path, to make things smooth for them. I don't regret it.

The cool thing is that you can interpret it as being a female in a place full of men, or you can also interpret it as being a non white person in a place with only white people, and the nice little detail of adding a black man at the end makes it work too. At the end it's about diversity.

That animation made me reminding how I was when I was a boy. The moment when I go to a new place, but it's so hard to communicate with such new people, that's a thing that is hard for me to do. That's also why I felt hurt when people hurt me and leaving me alone. Now that animation helped me to try to communicate with new people every time I go to a new place, and not being even scared about what would happen next... Love the animation though 💙

As a female Engineer, I have been told to act more "masculine" in order to relate to my predominantly male coworkers. When more women enter Engineering, hopefully this will no longer be an issue.
@angela.luntian
@angela.luntian 3 жыл бұрын
When theres an unequal ratio there will alway be that "try to fit in" scenario im afraid. It happens in classrooms, and more often than not it's not because of your gender but because of the general mannerisms you give out (assertive or b.t.s.? Leader or leaded on? Talkative or quiet? When these characteristics come in mind you categorize the two as "default" characteristics of "being masculine" and "being feminine", I'm afraid.)
@EternitysSlave
@EternitysSlave 3 жыл бұрын
@@angela.luntian I agree. I have more feminine associated personality traits while most people in my work environment have had more masculine coded interests and personalities. It's important to try and get along with others, especially in a classroom or a workplace, and adopting some personality traits or interests of another group for this reason can be good (as long as these personality traits and interests are healthy and in line with your own moral standards). The real problem comes when you are encouraged to completely change your personality in order to "fit in" or secure your job. Thankfully, this did not happen to me. Still, as it shows in the video, this process of comforming to the majority ends up erasing the potential of experiencing the positive effects of masculinity and femininity co-operating together in the fusion of different ideas and perspectives. Instead of only expecting new hires to conform to the workplace culture, their coworkers should also be encouraged to learn and appreciate differences. This back and forth, sadly, does not always happen.

I'm an engineering student, and yeah - you do have to kinda 'mask'. But as someone who is a bit geeky anyway, it's easy for me. Sure I don't talk about how I love getting my nails done, and how cute cats are - but they also do the same and keep talk to a general vibe that everyone can get involved in. Maybe it's cos the students are the new younger generation of engineers were sexism isn't as big a thing?
@toyamwarr
@toyamwarr 3 жыл бұрын
As a former engineering student, I faced the same issue. It’s maddening how being female in a male dominated industry means being “one of the boys”. Do men feel they have to be “one of the girls” in a female dominated industry like nursing? No, so why do I have to prove myself anymore than I did to get hired in the first place?

I feel like it was cute but the metaphor doesn’t really work because women aren’t unheard of concepts like sentient balls of yarn. It’s ok though.
@iliadovas6592
@iliadovas6592 5 жыл бұрын
KE Clarke they used the metaphor of yarn i think to show how women are perceived as these soft, submissive and domestic beings that cook, stay at home, knit, etc. she knit herself a knew persona because she felt that she had to change herself to be more like the men to be accepted by the men-which also very prevalent in false feminism. at the end we see that girl power really comes from supporting each other and accepting our femininity and how that does not make us any less equal to men. so while we can be perceived as submissive and domestic and soft, these characteristics aren’t necessarily negative. they shouldn’t exactly be the stereotype that determine how all women act, but for those who do- we should embrace it and embrace our femininity rather than try to become masculine to earn equality or success.

In knitting, there are two kinds of stitches: the knit stitch and the purl stitch, and they look distinct. When Purl redesigns herself, she uses the knit stitch, not the stitch she's named after. If that's not a powerful metaphor, I don't know what else is.

It's an interesting take on things. Sometimes discrimination isn't so much about deliberately being mean, as it is about not really understanding how to interact with people. The BROs weren't being mean or evil, they just didn't understand what this thing was or how to relate to it. By playing their game, Purl managed to step into their universe, and then, by bringing Lacey into their universe, she also managed to get the BROs to relate to her. Once the ice was broken and everyone was willing to step out of their comfort zone a bit, they got along fine, and the company probably did better as a result of fresh ideas.

Yeah, it is, but it seems to be lazily animated. Every character is the same, just with slight tweaking

@@kazutomotakayoshtosh the characters are meant to look similar to show how there wasn't much diversity before and also the laughing is meant to be cartoony, it looks better like that in a Pixar animation after all

Disney pixar gives you a message, even though people will give you looks, disagree, and don't allow you to be who you are. Just know that you can light up a room, be who you want to be, don't care what other people think about you, and you can be the path and hope for new people that come near your way. ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉❤❤😊

I realize the primary message is being yourself especially when the world wants you to be something else (specifically in relation to being a woman in a traditionally male proffesion) but I also saw something that is important. At the end, when she steps out of the elevator, she realizes it's important to bring the outsider into the group. Making that simple first move tempers all the social pressure afterwards.

Finally, someone that understands. This is not only about females being excluded, it's about this typical social organazation that forces the new ones to change and adjust to the group making it all the same, and boring.

That is the lesson. Truly. You start with yourself. It really isnt about bringing in equal amount of women into a place to "balance the men". It's about acceptance.

Why not both? Usually the best messages are ones that can convey multiple depending on what struggles each audience members goes through.
