It's an interesting take on things. Sometimes discrimination isn't so much about deliberately being mean, as it is about not really understanding how to interact with people. The BROs weren't being mean or evil, they just didn't understand what this thing was or how to relate to it. By playing their game, Purl managed to step into their universe, and then, by bringing Lacey into their universe, she also managed to get the BROs to relate to her. Once the ice was broken and everyone was willing to step out of their comfort zone a bit, they got along fine, and the company probably did better as a result of fresh ideas.

As a female Engineer, I have been told to act more "masculine" in order to relate to my predominantly male coworkers. When more women enter Engineering, hopefully this will no longer be an issue.
@angela.luntian3 жыл бұрын
When theres an unequal ratio there will alway be that "try to fit in" scenario im afraid. It happens in classrooms, and more often than not it's not because of your gender but because of the general mannerisms you give out (assertive or b.t.s.? Leader or leaded on? Talkative or quiet? When these characteristics come in mind you categorize the two as "default" characteristics of "being masculine" and "being feminine", I'm afraid.)
@EternitysSlave3 жыл бұрын
@@angela.luntian I agree. I have more feminine associated personality traits while most people in my work environment have had more masculine coded interests and personalities. It's important to try and get along with others, especially in a classroom or a workplace, and adopting some personality traits or interests of another group for this reason can be good (as long as these personality traits and interests are healthy and in line with your own moral standards). The real problem comes when you are encouraged to completely change your personality in order to "fit in" or secure your job. Thankfully, this did not happen to me. Still, as it shows in the video, this process of comforming to the majority ends up erasing the potential of experiencing the positive effects of masculinity and femininity co-operating together in the fusion of different ideas and perspectives. Instead of only expecting new hires to conform to the workplace culture, their coworkers should also be encouraged to learn and appreciate differences. This back and forth, sadly, does not always happen.

I'm an engineering student, and yeah - you do have to kinda 'mask'. But as someone who is a bit geeky anyway, it's easy for me. Sure I don't talk about how I love getting my nails done, and how cute cats are - but they also do the same and keep talk to a general vibe that everyone can get involved in. Maybe it's cos the students are the new younger generation of engineers were sexism isn't as big a thing?
@toyamwarr3 жыл бұрын
As a former engineering student, I faced the same issue. It’s maddening how being female in a male dominated industry means being “one of the boys”. Do men feel they have to be “one of the girls” in a female dominated industry like nursing? No, so why do I have to prove myself anymore than I did to get hired in the first place?
