Ranking Pixar follow-ups to my least favorite to favorite: (Bad films) Lightyear Cars 2 (Films that are okay, but feel like an obligation) Toy Story 4 Incredibles 2 (Film that might've been an obligation, but I still loved and consider a legit part in the narrative) Monsters University (Films that feel like they were made because the people behind them had a good idea on how to continue their narrative) Cars 3 Finding Dory Inside Out 2 Toy Stories 2 and 3 (I know that's cheating, but I'm of the hot take that both work equally in their own way)

No matter the quality I always like to see the latest Pixar film, sequel or not. IMO I think Incredibles 3 has the chance of being a film that fixes the second films issues as well as being a thrilling conclusion like Back to the Future Part 3. And I like the concept of Hoppers too. People say it’s a knockoff of Avatar’s idea, but that film’s idea already knocked off The Matrix.

The whole “Pixar Sequels bad” narrative seems dependent almost entirely on Monsters U, Finding Dory, Incredibles 2, and Cars 2, only the last of which is truly anything close to a “bad movie.”

I’m gonna be honest with you. I’m sick of all the Cars hate. Everyone seems to treat the franchise as a joke all because of Cars 2. I fully understand why Cars 2 is hated, but I feel like 1 and 3 deserve way more credit than they get. I am very nostalgic for the first movie since it was my first theater experience as a kid, but this series has been panned as being emotionless, boring, and having no good moments and I don’t get it. I’d argue that before Inside Out 2 Cars 3 was my pick for the best non Toy Story Pixar sequel.

Pixar sequels get a bad warp and honestly most of them aren't ready bad. There are exceptions of course like the cars sequels and Incredibles 2 in my opinion but because when sequels get announced people get this sense of dread that it could be bad. I was even one of them until the D23 announcements for Toy Story 5 and feels more natural to me than Toy Story 4 did. If anything this video convinced me to rewatch Toy Story 4 in a different perspective and see if anything changes

Exactly. I found the ‘toys’ argument to be a poor reason to denounce the Cars movies. It’s also immature and unrealistic to assume that because Pixar produced merchandise based on the movie that it means it has no depth or value.

I do think the second movie didn't have a great story, and it should have been balanced better between the two main characters. However the first one was pretty decent, while the third one had a great concept (while the execution was alright). It was a bit slow, but still had some heart in it. Besides, people need to understand that most family franchises will have merchandise made out of them for extra profits

Though these sequels struggle to be as great and fresh as their originals, I still think they are good movies on their own (even Cars 2 was not terrible, just mid). In my opinion, people exaggerated this thing like "Pixar sequels are bad". None of these sequels are as bad as Shrek the Third, for example.

A BIG thing I want for animated sequels in general is actually SETTING UP the sequel. I know it's a big risk financially, but I prefer it over "we're gonna make a sequel just because of financial success."

It’s not that Pixar sequels are inherently bad. Just look at Toy Story’s 2, 3, and Inside Out 2 in particular. Sequels that are not only great expansions of their originals, but arguably better than them. And aside from Monster’s University, Finding Dory, and Cars 3 all being pretty good as well, the rest of them felt like they were made with money first and passion second. Incredibles 2 had so much potential, but thanks to Disney not bearing to let one summer slide without a Pixar movie after they delayed Toy Story 4, it fell incredibly (pun unintended) short in the end. Toy Story 4’s ending arguably goes against what Woody learned in the trilogy all for the sake of another ending after we already got the best ending ever nine years prior. Lightyear was just an unnecessary spin off that no one was asking for. And do I even need to bring up Cars 2? In the end, Pixar sequels are either really good or just unnecessary.

Toy Story 4 was the only film from the Toy Story series so far to have had a positive impact on my life. I was seventeen when I saw it and at that point in my life, I was terrified of the idea of becoming an adult because of how the education system in secondary schools in Ireland treated it as an afterthought. As children, we're raised our entire lives with everything provided for us and all of a sudden at 18 it's cut off from us and then it's like "There you go you're an adult, go out there and if you do something stupid, then that's on you and you won't have a roof over your head, k bye lolololol". I remember feeling slightly uncomfortable in the cinema seeing Woody and Buzz have the same emotional vices that I was having at the time through their own problems in the context of the film and at the part where Buzz was fighting with his "inner voice" trying to find the voice line that he needed to hear, I thought to myself "shit that's going to be me in university". The ending where Woody and Bo Peep eloped thanks to Buzz's encouragement was the part of the film that gave me some encouragement to be brave when facing the future and being flexible with life. I have mixed feelings on Pixar making Toy Story 5 because in my eyes, Toy Story 4 was the perfect place to close the book when it came to the parent/child anthology that the series has, but from the premise of it being about the toys' jobs being made harder thanks to the presence of handheld devices, I'm intrigued to see where they would take it. My guess is that in the parent/child analogy that the series has been known for, the presence of handheld devices is the presence of step parents and the question of whether or not they do as good as a job as the original parents, in this case the toys, is the emotional forefront of the film.

I agree that people tend to hate Toy Story 4 without thinking about what it was aiming. Sure, the movie kind of strays away from what Woody and the gang had been working for throughout the years. It sucks that the whole gang gets sidelined, and it sucks that Woody goes against his original values. However, I believe that's what happens in life. You have to move on and find new goals when things aren't going your way anymore. You might want to continue living the same life you always had, but once you get older through the generations, your role in life shifts. It's up to you to decide how to adapt to this, and this movie showed that well with Woody becoming someone who helps other toys now to experience what he did with Andy. He still believes toys are important to their children, and he wants to make sure that keeps happening wherever he travels with Bo Peep. I'm interested in seeing how the fifth movie will progress, and hopefully they don't forget or demerit the fourth movie because of its backlash. It's still part of the franchise whether people like it or not, and it can make the toy gang have another life changing event

@@fabianugalde3789 I don't think that they give a shit about the stuff that nerds with no social lives like GamingMagic13 were crying about. It has the highest audience rating of the films so far on Rotten Tomatoes and in the concept art for the fifth film, Jessie has Woody's badge on her shirt so I wouldn't worry about it.

Incredible video, I think I agree with almost all of it! On Incredibles 2 I have to agree that while it's mostly good (and I mostly like the premise), I felt the way Bob was portrayed in the movie was less than likeable. Like, I like the idea that he's struggling as the stay-at-home dad, and there are moments where they portray this really well. But most of the time, he's portrayed as a clueless baton close to a psychotic break. I also don't like the way the villain was ultimately handled, it should have just been a separate person named the Screenslaver. As for Onward, it was okay, but I honestly found it mostly boring most of the time, mostly because Chris Pratt's character was mostly obnoxious. But I like the premise and it mostly kinda delivers on it. So, again, I do largely agree, Pixar sequels (and movies generally) are largely good! They're hated way too much, given they're mostly high quality.

I don't mind the Pixar sequel to a degree. Toy Story 2- is a great sequel to the 1st movie. It introduces fan favorite characters like Jessie and Bulleyes. It also induced Barbie, too. We also got Buzz Lightyear lore too, not just Woody. The only thing about this movie I don't like is Jessie song. It's really depressing, and I skip whenever I watch it. Also, the bloopers at the end are hilarious, and I wish there more of that. Toy Story 3- Is great, but to me, it is overrated. It does have a perfect ending to the franchise, but it's not my favorite. I really hate Lotso. I know he is the villain and is supposed to act mean, but he didn't need to be that mean. He almost killed our favorite characters. He also abuses what he calls friends. He ruins the story for me, sorry. Toy Story 4- I don't care what anyone thinks. Toy Story 4 is my favorite of the franchise, and I will defend this movie to no end. Was it necessary, no, but it still was enjoyable to me. It's in my top 5 Pixar movies of all time. I think this is my favorite because of 3 things. One is Forky. I don't know why, but I can't relate to Forky. I am trash, too. He is just too funny. The 2nd thing is that Gabby Gabby is an underrated villain. I like her so much better than Latso. She is more interesting. I felt bad that the girl didn't want her after all the trouble Gabby did to be perfect her. At least Gabby found her true home after. The third thing I love is the romance between Woody and Bo Peep, plus Bo Peep in general. They really changed Bo Peep for the better, in my opinion, in the movie. I love that she takes more risk and helps other toys. Then Woody finds her again, and he still has a thing for her. I'm sucker for romance, and I love Woody and Bo Peep (more than Buzz and Jessie). I also like the Woody left the gang. All his life, he thought why his kid wanted, but not he finally got to do what he wanted. Cars 2- I'm not a Cars fan, and this movie is just plan awful. The spy part isn't bad, and I do like Lighting storyline with racing other cars around the world isn't bad either. Having Mator be the main focus was a bad idea. Cars 3- this one isn't as bad, and I kinda like it. I like Cruz and her relationship to Lightning. Monster University - this is just OK for me. I don't remember most of it or the side characters that aren't Mike, Sully, or Randall. Finding Dory- this one is fine. I do love baby Dory, but that just it. The new characters are fine, too. The otters are cute, though. Incredible 2- This one is also fine. I'm one of the people thag kinda wish they did aged up the kids. I wanted to see Voliet in high school and toddler Jack Jack that can kinda talk. I do like Elasticgirl get more screen time. Inside Out 2- The first is one of my favorites, so I was excited to see more of the universe. It didn't disappoint. It's not good the first, but it's still pretty good. They only thing is that I beef with this movie. It felt too real when iy come to anxiety. I'm very anxious person and funny enough, Anxiety made me feel anxious (I guess the character did her job too well for me).

Ok, I agree with your opinions on how Pixar is consistent with the quality of their sequels but sequels from other studios like Kung Fu Panda 4 is not as bad as people make it out to be. I thought it was a solid movie. Maybe not as strong as the last three movies but it's still a good movie and worthy follow up nonetheless. I'll never understand why people simply trash on a movie based on surface level perceptions instead of going deeper and learning that there were some passion and heart put into them. If you want to call a movie mid, boring or straight trash, reserve that judgement for the movies that actually deserve it. The ones that have no effort, no heart, no soul, no creativity, makes little to no use out of it's budget or story and are cashgrabs just for the sake of it. If people can't see the difference, they don't understand filmmaking as they claim.

Cars is my least favorite franchise from Pixar but they still hold artistic value. You write off even the first movie because it was a merchandising giant but I find that silly since Cars 1 is an original & Pixar has admitted that they made Toy Story 2 solely for money. These movies are made with a level of quality and integrity that you agree others don’t give them credit for, yet with Cars there is this spectacular exception, as if the story wasn’t created with heart and passion from its writers, directors, voice artists, composers, etc. it’s also silly to me that a movie is devoid of value to you when it is a merchandise giant as if these movies aren’t made with at least some profit in mind, they are art but they need to be profitable otherwise Pixar should just be shut down and only produce picture books rather than big blockbusters. Also you make a good point about Dreamworks churning out movies of a lesser quality, but it’s odd that you posit Shrek 4 as an example of this on the level of the Third or Kung Fu Panda 4. Although it is not better than 1 or 2, like TS4 it had a meaningful story to tell & told it with respect for the original characters.

truth be told I do think Pixar sequels are kind of a mixed bag Toy Story 2 and 3, Inside Out 2 and Monsters University I think are good movies, but everything else has a "but" that ruins the movies Incredibles 2 does, to an extentl keep the essence of the original... but they regressed Bob's and Violet's development from the first movie and turned Dash into just a kid that runs around Toy Story 4 has an interesting idea... but it just feels weirdly corporate. honestly some of the side characters feel more like something I would see in an Illumination movie. plus the ending where the toys stop the ban felt very forced Finding Dory (which I actually think is decent) does make Dory a more complex character... but, just like Incredibles, regressed the development the main character from the original had, in this case being Marlin who went back to be an over protective dad and the cars sequels are cars sequels so they're bad I admittedly think this is less Pixar's fault and more the executives trying to force the directors to change something from the original idea
