Pixel 4a 5G Review | Best Google phone of 2020?

Reviewing Google's Pixel 4a 5G smartphone, boasting the same camera tech, gaming performance and slick OLED screen as the Pixel 5 flagship. Only for £100 less in the UK. I've been testing the Pixel 4a 5G as my full-time phone and here's my final review.
That dual lens camera is identical to Google's most premium 2020 handset, offering gorgeous photos and solid 4K video. It's a point and shoot cam that's pleasingly easy to get to grips with. I also love how you get the same Snapdragon 765G chipset, so games like Call of Duty and PubG Mobile play with a perfect frame rate on the top detail settings.
Battery life is absolutely fine too - I ended most days with the Pixel 4a 5G with around 20% charge remaining. And while there's no wireless charging here, unlike the 5, it's a minor omission given the £500 asking price.
The 6.2-inch OLED screen is the biggest among Google's new 2020 smartphones. It's sharp and colourful, and a great way to enjoy a bit of Netflix HDR action. Plus you get a headphone jack here, as well as dependable Bluetooth connectivity.
So that's my review of the Pixel 4a 5G, one of the best camera phones of the year for the £500 and under price bracket. I love the stock Android OS with guaranteed updates, smooth performance and the rest. Although I do miss that 90Hz screen of the Pixel 5 and many rivals.

I had a Google Pixel 2XL and I was IN LOVE with that phone, but when it was slowing down, I had to upgrade. I initially got the Pixel 5, had that for a week but the speaks were absolutely atrocious. Especially the top speaker that was placed UNDER the screen. It sounded very tinny. I exchanged it yesterday for the pixel 4a 5g and I have no regrets. The sound and call quality is much better. It is honestly the best upgrade from the 2XL.

I have one on pre-order. I'm moving to this from a onelpus 5t which I still love and is still giving me 5hr40min of screen on time after 3 years. The 4a5g has a very similar form factor to my 5t and with my wife and son having 6.5" and 6.7" screens, 6.1" is where I want to stay. I'm buying because #1 luckily, 5g is available where I live. #2 a free pair of bose qc 35 II (~220 eu) for early bird orders on the Google store in the uk + ire, making the phone @490eu ... a very good deal.

It was released 2 years ago, yes, but man what a phone. 4a 5g is much more worth it even if you ignore the size. while the pixel 5 is cheaper than last year, but it is still overpriced for what it is offering. plus you get 3.5mm headphone jack. trust me when I say the size of the 4a 5g is perfect. if you compare it to like a normal s10, the size is almost the same and that its size is also perfect.

So I am getting one delivered from Argos today cos it is now excellent value at £399 for Valentines Day. For £200 less than the Pixel 5, I don't mind the 60Hz screen and lack of wireless charging. Tbh I found the wireless charging on my 4xl (now owned by my dear husband) to be annoying and it killed the battery on my Galaxy S10+. So I use wired anyway. Am looking forward to those Pixel goodies again since I sold my 2xl to my daughter's partner and am looking forward to getting my new phone this morning. There is just something really special about Pixels.

Cameras, Software, Performance and Battery life is all the same in comparison with the Pixel 5 and (for non mmWaves 5G users) so is the Connectivity. 90hz is a slight miss, but I (personally) can trade it off as its a response OLED screen. Plus we get that Headphone Jack as a bonus. the one and Only big negative I can see here is the 18W charging which is basic for 2020 Standards but I guess that's will help with the Battery longevity by not degrading it much like Super Fast chargers do. Wireless charging... meh don't need it, though some sort of IP Rating would've helped at this price but I guess we have to settle for less to pay for the brand value. Still overall I find it to be a better Value offering than the Pixel 5. Definitely Going for this or the Nord Special Edition that's coming up in Dec-Jan.

I have ordered one, choosing the 4a5g over the 5 because I prefer a larger screen and headphone jack. Not having a higher refresh rate isn't an issue for me as I'm coming from an older phone with 60Hz refresh rate, so I won't know what I'm missing.

I have this on pre-order personally... moving back to Google from a long stint with Huawei... Hoping the promotion with the Bose headphones in the UK comes through as if I can sell them on and sell my current handset this would make for a very cheap upgrade. Yes this isn't the best handset out there but again I think at the price point it is with the free headphones to sweeten the deal it's very good value. The lack of wireless charging and 90hz is not a dealbreaker for me but I did want that extra camera and the bigger battery over the 4a, stock google and timely updates will be a welcome change.... looking forward to getting the device next week and getting it setup and taking some epic mobile photos. The 765g seems to be really well optimized and is faster than the iphone 11. Only thing this beast is missing is a 90/120 hz screen but otherwise it's a mid range beast. Waiting for the black friday sale for it.

Yes it can run a 90hz display pretty well but it will cost the battery which is smaller than pixel 5 4080 mah cell. Also consider its larger display at 6.2 inches. Making it 60hz is just a fine tune for its larger display and smaller battery compared to pixel 5.

Look I think it's kinda cool that Google went with the 765g on this lower end phone, but honestly at 500 usd it makes more sense to get a last Gen flagship with an 855+ that would wipe the floor with the 4a. Something like the one plus 7t is a better buy than a 4a and a better phone that the 5.

I'm considering trading in my half-paid-off Pixel 3a XL for this device, so thanks for the info. I love the phone, but one drawback of the 3a XL is the lack of a SD card slot. EDIT: no, this device doesn't have one either. That might be enough for me to pass on increasing my monthly payments. To also be able to take advantage of 5G where it's increasingly available for my carrier is a plus also. The issues with the outside finish can be remedied with a protector case. My 3a XL has also turned glitchy after the Android 11 update, chopping permissions for vital apps, me having to re-install the app, then it works for a while, then it capriciously stop working again. Hopefully the new phone's version of Android 11 will be more stable -- or even better, come equipped with Android 10. EDIT: no, Tech Spurt tells us that it comes with Android 11.

I'm really on the fence still. I have the pixel3 and I'm not sure that I am going to gain anything from jumping to the 4a5g or the 5 for now. We don't have 5g support from our carrier here yet so there isn't any benefit from that, and also I feel like the 765g is kinda a side step from the 845. I don't wanna give this guy away until there is a real reason or a true step forward. My wife has the regular 4 and the only good thing is the 90htz and that is such a small change that the 4 wasn't a good reason either. I know I can get through the next 10-12 months and android 12 with this. Hopefully the pixel 6 is a big change.

Still rocking my pixel 2xl and Ive had all of them like 1,3,4a and still like my 2xl for some reason. After three years it's still fast, has better screen with more pixel density if it's not one of those affected by lg crappy screens and battery is amazing , specially compared to pixel 3. Aside that android 11is the last update why wouldn't you buy one of these since they can be found for close to nothing.

Just purchased one of these as I have had Chinese phones for the past 2 years (17 months with Huawei Nova 3i and 7 Months with the Xiaomi Mi 9T) but decided I wanted to get back to the non-chinese phones after previously being with Apple between 2012 and 2017 but not a fan of Apple anymore. Originally was between this and the Sony Xperia 5 II because I love my headphone jack so Pixel 5 and SG S20 were out of the running for me. Plus I just dislike phones over 6'3", which both of my previous 2 were, I couldn't go any bigger then either of those (to the SG A51 for example).

If you dont do much Gaming or video watching on your device, definately go for pixel 4a, this one here is for a bit heavy users. battery life cycle i reckon is going to be more or less the same. 4a5G might give you an hour more on screen but 4a will charge faster than this.

I'm a little worried about how it has zero water resistance. You take it out in the rain once, and you have a $500 brick.

I have a supposedly zero water resistance phone and I dropped a glass of water on it and it was fine if you put it next to a fan or heater for a couple hours and power off. I think water resistance is just a trick by tech companies to sell you something that doesn't exist

Best thing is that after I bought my pixel 4a5g is that I never felt that I was robbed by money, a feeling I had for a looong time after I bought a galaxy s9+ some years ago. I am so happy with this pixel!

Does this have the Warm-Yellowish screen (when not in dark mode) ?? I returned my pix-4a for that reason. Sadly it didn't have settings for the Cooler /Warmer screen tones, as Samsung.

I accidentally wrecked my Galaxy A50. I was considering the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, but it was to much for my needs. I bought the Pixel 4A 5G today. It an absolutely amazing phone. I'm happy with my choice. Next is to check out its vlogging capabilities.

It depends on what you use your phone for, but I'd say that, if you don't mind paying a little more money, the Pixel 4a 5G is the best out of the two :-)

Not sure if you asked a general question to the comment section or to Tech Spurt only. I think you should be fine with Spotify unless you have decent speakers or headphones to which you are able to tell the difference between 320kbps and FLAC and are listening critically to music at all times. Alternatives to Tidal hi res streaming are Deezer and Qobuz. If you are buying hi res music, your options are Qobuz, 7digital, HDtracks, and ProStudioMasters; Qobuz and 7digital allow you to purchase stand alone tracks in 16 bit FLAC or hi res 24 bit FLAC. 24 bit FLAC really is not much better than regular 16 bit FLAC; You might only consider hi res 24 bit if you want a slightly different mastering than what you would get with CD ripped 16 bit FLAC.
