Pixel 5 is worth about $489. I could point out better Chinese phones around $350. It's recycled aluminum, cheap underperforming parts and basically feels like the birth of the iPhone all over again happening 13 years too late. I used to rail on my brother about how insanely inconvenient and expensive MacBooks and iPhones are and this Pixel 5 is no different. I got a Pixel 4XL on eBay for $300 and I love it more than any phone I've had so far. Great screen, speakers, face unlock, software, battery life and camera. I don't need my phone to do anything else. The Snapdragon 888 is only a bit cooler and doesn't make any difference in my usage. I'm done wasting money on trivial stuff.

Not a single negative there that I care about. The back feels fine to me, and besides which, I always put cases on phones to protect them from drops. The built-in speakers are at least as good if not better than my previous phones for the times that I use it - when I care about having bigger sound, I'll connect it to bluetooth speakers / headphones (or use a hifi, etc.) Every phone I've ever had is good enough in the camera department for basic snaps - when I care about the photo quality, I use a real camera. I do not game on my phone. Ever. I use my phone - *as a phone* - (I know, that's shocking, right) and as a phone the software is significantly better than what other Android handsets provide. The one thing I would agree with is that it doesn't necessarily justify the price premium over the 4a 5G. They should have just released one 5G handset, although I would lean towards the Pixel 5 and pricing it at $100 less (which ought to be achievable when you aren't fragmenting the market). I get that reviews should cover all aspects of phones so that people can make up their own minds about what is important to them, but it's a pity that hardly anyone talks about why these devices are a better *phone* than other handsets that might offer more powerful hardware at a similar price.

@@jarjarbinks8954 you’re saying it’s not that large because you’re comparing it to Samsung and other Sony sensors, but you forget that it’s a 12mp sensor compared to 48, 64, and 108 on other android phones this year, it’s going to be much more well optimized because the hardware doesn’t have to do any binning to get the large photon sizes. The way specs look on paper isn’t everything, the size difference between the 108mp sensor in Samsung phones and the 48mp in the OnePlus 8 pro is very negligible if it makes any difference at all. All are still small sensors when compared to real cameras.

How come other manufacturers are finding a way to balance thin all screen design and good speakers? Google definitely has the resources and talent to put a complete phone together. I just don't think they care. I've seen various tech blogs and reviewers talk about the reason the Pixel exist and one of them is to keep Samsung in line. When Samsung was looking to build out it's own ecosystem and move away from Android and google services. Pixels are an afterthought to Google and year over year it shows in their compromises.

Never liked face unlock. It's pointless, fingerprint biometric sensor on the back is perfect and faster considering most of the time you pull it out your pocket and the phone is already unlocked due to the perfect placement. BUT THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH FACE UNLOCK: Many apps do not support it natively instead of using your password and still only have options for using your fingerprint instead of your password. I couldn't imagine having to input my password all the time because I have a phone with "superior face unlock" but no fingerprint option and am forced to enter a password manually every time. The N20U and iPhone 11 Pro cost twice as much as the Pixel 5. Marc Levoy former head of Google's camera development said there were trade offs for using bigger sensors. Not sure who to believe here, a PHD professor with decades of experience of a KZbinr named Max?
@MaxTechOfficial
@MaxTechOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
Yes the Note 20 is a lot more expensive but the cameras in the 11 Pro are the same as the iPhone 11 (other than telephoto, which was just one image in this test). You can buy the 11 right now for $599. There are definitely trade offs for using larger sensors which is mostly the readout speed and needing to use larger higher quality lenses which means big camera bumps and of course price. The readout speed gets improved year over year so now larger sensors can be read out faster than the Pixels 4 year old sensor.

Other reviews may be soft but the tone of this one feels overly critical just to be different. Parts feel like you think it's the worst Pixel ever but other parts praise it. I don't care about benchmarks and hate that they are showing up in phones reviews now, especially if the only time you see a performance hit is in intense games at full settings. It's like those stupid camera scores everyone used in their marketing and reviews a few years ago. I do agree on $600 being where it should have been. I don't agree that the 4a experience is the same despite the hardware similarities. Samsungs software IMO is the biggest negative of all, and a stopper for me. At least the OnePlus 8t has a cleaner UX but I'd still prefer the smaller size, better battery and camera on the Pixel 5....along with what I think is the best android experience by far still

100% agree. I’m an Apple fanboy...but IMO he’s just being dishonest. Saying things like “I thought I had a defective phone, the speakers are really that bad!” They aren’t. They’re 100% not that bad. Google, as much as I don’t like them, wouldn’t put their name on if they sucked like he’s describing. Also, talking about 670 nits vs 1200 nits on the screen brightness like that means ANYTHING to 99% of people buying phones. Cool factoid, I guess? I’ve literally never considered how a phone benchmarks. Ever. I don’t even know anyone who has...and a run in a pretty technical crowd. This feels like he’s trying to be edgy or something. It’s weird. Lol.

Good Review. I have Pixel 5, iPhone 12 Pro Max, and Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus used by individuals in my home. Your review is good except for the 5G speed. I ran tests on all three phones and the 5G download and upload on Pixel 5 were better than iPhone and Samsung. Did this test repeatedly 5 times and same results. This speed may differ by area but in the same area of the three phones, I was surprised to see Pixel getting more download speeds. I am aligned with your review but somehow Pixel's experience is a winner for me out of the three phones.

In Canada doesn't make sense to buy 4a 5g which is only $130 cad difference from the pixel 5. Also even with the identical sensors of the cameras, it looks like the pictures on the 5 are noticeably better than the 4a 5g (and the 4a), from what I've seen in reviews. I thought your critical review has flaws. I agree with 5G speeds and speakers not the best cause it shows, you have proofs. But the photos, when you put side by side comparisons with iPhone and the Note, the Pixel still looks better except the closeup of your kid. Then again unnecessary raising a point of how much time Pixel 5 takes to process an image which by way is few secs. I mean pictures are there to look at later after you have shot and few secs processing no problem. The gaming I would say still you don't have enough proofs and didn't show plus this chip is said to be decent with games so don't know where your views are coming for or had a one off bad experience or it will be better with software update. With showing benchmark scores you may garner attention or alarm people but it means nothing when P5 is smooth, layman doesn't know and look for these bench marks. Lastly, do note that you comparing phones like iPhone and note to it which has multiple lens and double the price and quiet bigger in size. My biggest deal breaker is the speaker which I knew before your video as few reviewers have pointed and you are not the only one. Even the sensor which is 4 years old have been covered by another reviewer.

To address your concerns 1) in terms of pricing, this phone is only $699 in the US as it has mm wave 5g. Everywhere else in the world, it’s cheaper .. it’s only $799 in Canada. That actually makes it $150 cheaper than the FE and One + 8T. 2) The 5G speeds you’re getting are wack. I’ve seen numerous channels showing speeds north of 300 mps. You said your local provider provides Sub 6 5G and that maybe be why you’re not able to utilize as your phone supports mm wave. Not entirely sure but give it some time. 3) Stop comparing its processor to phones that are so much more expensive. Again, taking into consideration law of one price, which isn’t accurately reflected in the US, how are you comparing this to a note 20 Ultra or IPhone 11. To put that in proper perspective, that’s comparing a phone that’s $799 versus two phones beginning at $1,550. Canadian prices in the aforementioned. If you pay twice as much, you deserve more performance. 4) Shitty stereo speakers I agree with you. Have yet to get mine but will agree from your review 5) Long picture processing times is BS. That’s annoying to me too. Hopefully they can have some software updates that address this, especially since they’re offering 3-years of them.. Thanks

Most people, especially KZbinrs forget that Google are very young in the phone game and they get bashed so hard for it, swapped my S20 ultra for a pixel 5 a few days ago mainly for a smaller phone and of course there's some other that I'm sacrificing but I don't regret it because I'm loving it, the speakers really aren't bad at all, if your thinking about getting a pixel 5 don't be fooled and put off by this video because as we all know KZbinrs will put out any video for clicks regardless of whether things are true or false.

The 4xl had decent battery life, mine around 6/7 screen on time with soli and motion sense turned off...I kept the AOD on tho. It was the smaller pixel 4 that had poor battery life.

I appreciate Max's honest and critical reviews and analyses of tech. The other bigger channels aren't as critical on the big companies like Google and Apple so they stay in their good books and get review units.

Google is 100% on the right track now with this new pixel line the 4A the 4a5g and the 5. They finally realized it's not their marketing niche or sales niche to compete with Samsung or Apple. Google is totally relying on the strength of its camera it's minimal pixel experience pure Android and just the ease of use.

the 1200 nits brightness you're refering on the iPhone and Samsungs is not the typical brightness of the screen. its the brightness one small white spot can achieve for a short amount of time, while the other parts of the screen are dark. typical brightness on iPhone 12 is lower than on the pixel, iPhone 12 Pro and S20 beat it by about 130 nits, but those cost 200-300$ more

You're the only tech reviewer to cover the issue with noisy shots indoors in less than perfect lighting. My Pixel 4A has this exact issue and it's so frustrating. My wife's iPhone SE gets way better photos indoors of the kids/pets when they are moving.

The Pixel 5 would have been an amazing $300-$400 phone, maybe $500. The price is just way too high. You're better off getting the 4a or 4a 5G.

The funny thing is the phone is only a bad deal in the US, UK buyers get a free Bose headphone and it is $649 in Taiwan. Just because some 5G bullshit in the US so it is expensive over there.

I'm from France, I bought a Pixel 5 (629€), and Google send the Bose QC 35 . I'll sell it for 220€, so the final cost is going to be 409€. For this price, it's the beast deal you can find. Pay 699$ for the Pixel 5, it doesn't woth it but, for 409€, it's great value 😍

Even at that price you'll be disappointed after a while, Google products are just horrible, American reviewers bias propaganda keeps them alive.

@@benjamin7114 Disagree. They could be horrible in spec numbers but definitely not horrible in user experience. As long as pure android experience is what some group of people want, which I'm into as well, Pixel devices will always have their market. There is no other competitor in my mind can compare with Pixels in pure Android experience. The closest one may be OnePlus but I personally avoid all Chinese phones due to security issues.

Why is this guy the only one (who I've seen so far) who basically found a bunch of faults in over half of this phone's features? The Speakers are the only glaring issue.

The speakers are fine. He is exaggerating. There's not much of a difference between those of the Pixel 5 and the Pixel 3a.

@@splashmaster2000 Do you have the phone? If so, what's your thoughts so far? Just for context, I would much rather play games on a console or PC rather than a Phone, so I primarily use my phone for reading, streaming, other stuff.

Telus Canada has the S20 FE priced 5.00/month less than the Pixel5 and the S20 is 5.00/month more on a 2 year plan. Curiously the 4A 5G is 1.00 less per month. Do i keep my Pixel 2 for another year, or go with Samsung?

Ok so it's not as loud. That means it's quiet, not that it sounds 'bad' necessarily. Is the sounds quality good or tinny like less expensive phones because that would be inexcusable for a google flagship.
